Agreed. There are lots of options if you want to preserve the legacy platform.
I'm surprised the poll option (and the discussion) rarely considers reimplementing the OS and providing emulation capabilities as a fallback.
Yes, it's a not a trivial exercise but compared to hoping to leverage 40 year old code...? |

AROS defined itself as an "implementation of the AmigaOS 3.1 application programming interface (API)".

As indicated by my second post it all messed up. I had to redo whole poll as a preview erases it all. Then after all that I found all options were wrong and the x86 option ended up in the title and gave up. Last edited by Hypex on 09-May-2022 at 07:44 AM.

Although I doubt it will ever happen, I would like to be able to run OS4 on any sufficiently powerful, commonly available hardware, such as x86 or ARM or Raspberry Pi.

I am sorry that I am not able to say anything new.
I think it is a good idea to port OS 4.X to AMD 64 and also to Raspberry Pi.
edit: I wish PPC was cheaper and more available.

This is already being done, but there are hardware compatibility issues with the distros (respins?) I've tried. The AROS X86-64 hosted-on-Linux version works well, but there are very few apps.

Calling them 'forces' might be giving them way too much credit. Some are worthy of the label 'initiative', some are 'side projects' with an open-ended delivery date, and then there are the 'projects on life support'.

| your can legally copy the function as long as you make it without knowledge of the original code ie blind room programming. it's how the original bios were copied. So far all I've seen is people who like to complain and not buckle down and do the work.

| @hardwaretech: you can copy everything from AROS without a clean-room approach, and release your products based on its source code.
But you have to release the changes that you've made on that code. This is the only (reasonable) restriction. |

I think what most people ask is visual (f.e. icons) and desktop related. The only exception is 68k integration, on aros you use UAE and have nothing like Petunia. Except that I think it is possible to do. I personal do not own or use OS4 but perhaps someone will do. People often mix desktop and OS. Last edited by OlafS25 on 29-May-2022 at 09:02 AM.
