Yes Smartfilesystem is your best choice.
the fonts will initialize pretty fast with it but not as fast as with ngfs but it's not released yet (there is an old version on the X5000 iso but that one is old and probably locked to work on X5000 only)

I will look into this, probably going to do a reinstall OS4.1FE later this week.

Do you have any recommendation for SFS or SFS2 which one to pick?

What are the pros and cons?

@sananaman

Update ...

I used Fast File System with long file names for my AmigaOS4 (SYS:) partition from 2004 until July 2010.

After JXFS was introduced, I used JXFS for my other partitions.

In July 2010, I changed my AmigaOS4 (SYS:) partition to SFS\00 and continued to use JXFS for my other partitions.

Sometime later, JXFS was no longer supported and I switched all my JXFS partitions to SFS\02.

Current configuration:

AmigaOS4 (SYS:) partition is 2 GB formatted as SFS\00
"Work" partition is 35 GB formatted as SFS\00
Another partion is 50 GB formatted as SFS\02
and a small backup partition formatted as FFS with long file names.

If I recall correctly, SFS\02 allows bigger partitions and bigger files, but I don't know the details.

@redfox

Thanks Redfox for your suggestions.

I'll try that SFS for a Workench (boot) partition soon.

I noticed that Oddyssy is very slow and the HD activity is going like haywire.
I hope the SFS will solve that.

Another option would be that I exchange the IDE-2-CF adapter to a true PATA SSD disk.

@sananaman

Today, I changed my "Work" partition from SFS\00 to SFS\02 ...

- used Media Toolbox to create a new partition to use for the backup
- used BackUp tool by Daniel Westerberg to backup my Work partition
- used Media Toolbox to change Work partition to SFS\02
- copied all files back using same BackUp tool

As an experiment, I created a partition formatted as JXFS and used it as my backup device. Worked just fine for me but maybe I was lucky.

I used JXFS years ago for all my non-boot partitions.

IMHO, BackUp tool by Daniel Westerberg (onyxsoft.se) is a great backup tool.

Update...

Looks like that JXFS partition is write-protected now. Can't quick format or write any new files to it. Now I recall that this was a precaution so we would quit using JXFS. We could read our old JXFS partitions but not write new files or change existing files. However, BackUp tool can write to a JXFS partition.

Anyways ... I used Media Toolbox to delete the JXFS partition.

AmigaOS4 partition = SFS\00
"Work" partition = SFS\02
third partition = SFS\02
Backup partition = DOS\07 FFS with long file names

Ok guys,

I figured out that the problem was with the slowdowns with Odissey, it was in fact the Compact Flash card.

DevInfosNG already gave an indication that the CF Card (Sandisk 64GB 160MB/s) was not performing well in my AmigaOne Micro.

I changed it for a Samsung SATA SSD 870.
Suddenly my AmigaOne Micro is flying and snappy as hell.

Odyssee font initialisation at first time use which took over 30 mins on the CF card,
now took only 20 seconds.

I used the StarTech 40-Pin- IDE to SATA Converter.
Seems all working fine.

I also use SFS2 for all my partitions.

My Micro feels like a new computer.

@sananaman

I wonder if your IDE-2-CF is slowing it down. 64GB isn't much to play with but enough for a few partitions. Using CF will avoid mechanical latency but it's not designed to be used as a desktop HDD or SSD.

Are your IDE ports as standard and without any DMA fix? If so that will run even slower being crippled to a PIO mode. SFS will help but will only go so far.

Locating an Sii0680 IDE card or a Sii SATA card to plug an actual HDD or SSD into would be better. As these can be used with DMA modes. If your AmigaOne lacks the IDE fix this is the next best thing and unlike the fix doesn't produce side effects.

Edit: I see you have a Micro which doesn't have the DMA issues of the XE. So you should be able to use DMA on board. Better since your PCI expansions will be limited.

Check here for filesystem comparison:
