From Sibbi's post on Amiga.org, I gather you mean Chris?

If so, should further comments or discussion about Amigaworld be directed to him instead?

@kolla

Same here - long delay but actual transfer rate on connection is fine. Reverse DNS would be my first suspect.

depending on when you try to connect.

Added: agree with Karlos. transfer time improved -after- showing down. Someone is busy?

Speculation, based on behaviour... system tries (well, tried) to do reverse lookups in DNS (looking up IP-addresses) in attempt to figure out our hostnames, so it can put them in the access log.

If the configured DNS resolvers ("name-servers") don't answer (because they are not available somehow), the web server hangs till the attempt to look up IP address times out. The solution is two-fold, either ensure that resolving name servers are available and working, or simply turn off this "feature" in the web-server and just log IP-addresses. Or better yet - do both! There's really no good reasons to do "live" reverse lookups on clients connecting to a public web-server, it just adds complexity, delays not to mention unnecessary DNS traffic. When it is somehow needed, it is better to send the logs to dedicated log processing services that can do such look ups much more efficiently (large DNS change, or no DNS at all, just using IP register info) without affecting the web service.

Today I noticed that the Upload Avatar page has a Submit button again!

So I started to upload my normal picture as avatar instead of the XMas one I've been stuck in since mid-December.

But while I did get rid of the elf outfit, the new (normal) avatar hasn't replaced it. So at the moment I have no avatar, just a small picture placeholder icon.

I even tried uploading once more, and hitting F5 a few times, but same result.

Hopefully we'll get the rest of the way soon ...

Best regards,

Niels

Because the people hosting and supporting this forum site are rank amateurs.

Let's not confuse the owners with Sibbi who has tirelessly worked for decades here to keep the site functioning for no pay and little thanks.

No disrespect was intended toward Sibbi. I'm sure he does the best he can with the resources at his disposal.

The source of my mildly sour grapes is that back when they invited volunteers with the aim of delegating management of the AW.net site, I threw my proverbial hat into the ring. Beyond my own professional capabilities and love for both Amiga and AW.net, I also could tag in the resources of my company Crystal Delta.

But I guess that all must have sounded too professional for the folk at A-EON.

Unless your people for some strange reason would be prepared and willing to serve the web like it's 1999? Doing any sort of "modern" hosting comes with a pricetag that they may not be willing or able to afford.

Supporting legacy applications is not a foreign concept for myself nor CD.

Oh how magnanimous of them. They'll buy all the Amiga forums and community sites, under the pretense of caring, but then cheap-out on the monthly bill.

I'd rather have a Christmassy Harkonnen trooper than no trooper! Consider this a protest to keep my hat on until it's fixed!

@whomever

Just an observation.

The Xoopsmembers index is also returning a blank page
