Glad to be of service

It's amazing how hacky BeOS feels after using OS X for a wile (er yea, Camino to...) not to mention the PPPoE support is really flakey (though I guess using a leaked OS I'm asking for that...)

--

Anyway to the point:

Genesi are not doing a G5 at this moment, they are doing a new version of the Peg (better, rack mountable) and an 8641D (dual core G4) machine after that (see the SNDF article on www.ppcnux.de).

Also, web stats are higly deceptive (as I've demonstrated!) so maybe you should advertise the site a bit better post some news items around to various interested web sites and you'll have a lot better idea how much interest there will be.

@minator

Thanks for the BeOS hits. The OS thing was just a little interesting distraction that came about when I was messing arround with writing a coutner to monitor the site activity so I could see if people were actually viewing it. i have since implemented it on every page and moved it to SQL (A LOT securer now, only I can see the data collected).
I looked at that article about Genesi, interesting, looks like we will be the first non-Apple/IBM G5 system after all if we get this out quickly
The site will be advertised as soon as we have finished checking the content and DaveP sorts the domain name settings out, until then the email addresses won't work and the site needs this long and ugly URL to be accessed. Donations are currently being accepted on temporary addresses however, deatils of which can be found on the donations page at

There is on thing I don't understand:

The FAQ says there will be only one board per 6-12 month. How does that figure? What doe that mean? That in five years there will be only five boards in existence?

I thought it meant one board per developer for a six to twelve month period?

@Rogue

I suppose they mean you can only order one board per person
every 6-12 months.. Limited supply I think!

In that case I would propose to update the FAQ, because this really got me thinking...

Sorry for the confussion, one of the ideas behind the project is to get boards to end users cheaper by selling them directly at cost. To prevent abuse of this scheme there will be a limit of how many you can purchase. This will iether be a limit of one per person per 6-12monthesw or one per board design eg ATX, microATX,mini-ITX etc.

Are you (Hyperion in general - I can't remember who it was who contacted me and I'm away from my Inbox at the moment) still interested in getting your hands on the board once it is purchased so you can do a port? Basically I can ship the board which comes as part of the evaluation package to Hyperion on loan as soon as it arrives here. Most of my work will come form the acompanying docs.

@DaveP

Thanks DaveP, unless anyone can think of anything that needs changeing the site is ready to launch. All I want to do is finish the projects page, currently the detailed view only gives a fraction of the info stored in the DB, also I want to move some info off the about page into the detailed projects view as sugestd earlier

I noticed you were having issues with moneybookers and not having buy now buttons. Their site is a bit hard to navigate I must admit, but after a bit of searching found this:

MoneyBookers

and for setting up more complex stuff see here:

@digitaldisaster

I think you should start a new thread as a problem with large threads is people won't read the entire thing

A fresh thread would allow you to condense the large thread into what is happening and give details of where the web site is etc.

This has to be the shadiest scam yet.

Here, Edward, is a better way to do it. Get a business loan for $6000. That's fairly easy in the UK - that kind of loan is a pittance. Add $100 markup to every board - this will help you get that business loan if this is in your business plan.

In Sterling and Euro that is a pittance (and your resale of the boards at roughly cost for what may well be a lot cheaper than the actual Momentum board would justify that small markup).

Sell 65 of them in 6 months. Settle your loan.

This is a lot more legally sound and viable than "please donate $6000 for a project we may never finish, produce or market after tomorrow".

Neko - an actual VAT registered business owner who buys and resells computer components

This thread is slowly dieing as the website is now up and once the email addresses are sorted (I'm working on it) then all activity will be moved there.
I have several update to the FAQ which I need to enter into the database and a bit of editing to the Projects page then we can get one of the mods to put a news item on the main page and everyone can go spread the news on their favouritee Amiga/Linux/Mac/PowerPC related forums.

@Neko

If you had read the thread through then you would be much less skeptical about this.

If I were to conduct this project as a business via a loan then it would have to be a greate deal larger then $6000, that only covers the cost of purchasing the board, which is what the donations are for, so that we can have something to show potential investors WHEN we go to get backing, which we will need to do a large scale production run. As I have been saying from the very begning.
If I were to go to an investment company for backing and they ask me how much I'm going to charge and I say cost then they're going to ask me how I'm going to make money and when I say by selling them to business their going to take one look at the name "Amiga" and laugh me out of the room. But if I take a board, allready running the AmigaOS, with initial developer sales and several pre-orders then they will take it a lot more seriously.

There is no "roughly cost" about it, the idea is that individuals buy them at EXACTLY the cost, that means what it costs us to have the boards produced, purchase the components, have the boards assembled, shipped to us, tested and then distributed to the people that purchase them. If you start adding a small markup the project changes.

There is nothing illegal about this, the donations are made with the understanding that they are being used to purchase a board to aid in development, if the project fials then all of the money is refunded less the ~2-3% transfer fees charged by payPAl and MoneyBookers.

You may run a VAT registered company that buys and sells computer parts but that is VERY different to this, do you buiy the chips in, design the boards then have them produced? No, you buy them either via a distributer of direct form the manufacturer!

@Neko

This has already been discussed (in this thread somewhere I believe) and this method of community fund rasing was agreed upon or at least decided one way or the other.

I am sure if someone wanted to fund the entire project for DD it would be open and welcome!

The whole point of this is to give back to the community motherboards at cost or near cost. If it can be pulled off I certainly wouldn't mind seeing involved parties (particularly Edward) getting some $ for his efforts.

Scam or not, it's the risk you have to take sometimes when you want something special and high-end that does not yet exist. ;)

Now, off to make a donation!
