Hallo fellow Amigians

I always wanted a stable and good laptop for AROS.
Some years ago ClusterUK and many others got that realised with fully support for ACER aspire one. This is still a ok platform for AROS but as web-browsing, emulation and many other tasks got more demanding the need for more powerfull hardware is needed.

The DELL latitiude D520 is far from something new but the hardware is very simelar to ACER aspire one. The big difference is that the display res. is higher and the CPU is much faster. All that is needed is a replacement of the wi-fi card. Something that is very easy to do.

Search for this wi-fi card on e-bay

Atheros AR5BXB63

This laptop can be found very cheap on e-bay.

I will put up many videos running AROS on this laptop.
I will show 68k emulation and I can tell you that 060 demos with JIT enabled runs full speed on this computer.
I compared a AGA demo with A1200 060 50Hhz with this computer under emulation and this computer did some of the scenes more smooth.

You can also connect keyboard, usb joysticks, usb drives and montiors to this laptop. I use a 21" CRT monitor from VGA out on this laptop when I like to emulate 68k stuff like demos and games.

I will update this thread as I do new videos and bring in new information.

First of all I just wanted to know if there are any interest in people getting AROS laptop and if you have any questions bring'em on.

AROS rocks!

This video show you how to replace the wireless network card on this laptop. You need the right type as there are limited drivers for AROS wi-fi chips.

This video is about how to change the internal drive. This is of cause not something you have to do but realy recommended.
60 GB SSD is perfect for AROS. Can also be found cheap on ebay. Kingston always worked good for me.

Next video is about how to install AROS.
This is after you have AROS booting from either a usb-drive or optical disk.
You can read more about that here:

https://sites.google.com/site/arosaspireone/installation

You can contact me if that is difficult for you and I send you AROS CD for free to boot from optical drive. You only pay for the shiping.
nik-tom(at)online.no

This video is about how to install AROS to internal drive. It is not only for DELL latitiude D520 but in general for AROS hardware.

In this video I'm using a AROS night build. The same applies if you install icaros-desktop or AspireOS that are AROS distrubutions.

@nikosidis

That's the first successful nightly build native installation that I've seen -- congratulations!

Get yourself a DELL Latitiude D520 and be happy forever

@nikosidis

You talked me into it. I found one on Amazon (sold through a local guy) that I just ordered for 80 bucks.

I bet there is a way to get rid of the Dell logo in the Bios there (the load one). I can make a good 16 color Aros logo that will work much better.

We should make some fun Aros/Amiga inspired laptop skins also. DecalGirl will let you make them for generic laptops.

Not yet... I pulled the trigger on the laptop right before bed... was a bit of a impulse purchase. :P I'll look around today for the wifi card. Does the SSD make that much difference?

Haha :D

Tommy:

It really does but you can always wait with it and try out AROS first.
60GB is more than enough for AROS and is quite cheap.

Looks good :)
As said you can always use the HDD until you get some SSD. As you can see in the video I made it is very easy to replace.

One little note. At least on my laptop that has very bad batteri the CPU goes much down if I unplug to power cord.
We have this program called System monitor in Sys:system/ folder where you can see the type of CPU you have and the speed.
I think they made this laptop with some different configurations regarding CPU. Mine is T2300 @ 1.66GHz. When I have power cable pluged inn system monitor show 1676 to1694 that is around what it should be. If running batteri MHz can do down to 600 HMz that is not what I would like to see ;)
Check it out when you have everything ready and report back. I guess your batteri is not in good shape either if not replaced at some point.

Edit: found your model.

You are lucky Tommy. Faster than mine. Will be nice to compare some results when you have it up and running.

http://mobilespecs.net/laptop/DELL/DELL_LATITUDE_D520.html

You have T7200 2GHz

Just a simple demonstration on this laptop where you can see the different running this simple MESA demo in 3D hardware against software rendering.

https://youtu.be/6swWPFjXKBk

It is around 270 fps agains software rendering around 80 fps.
Even if this is a quite weak 3D chip from Intel the difference is huge.

I noticed on e-bay it is possible to get keyboard with different languages for replacement if the lang. on the one you like to buy is wrong.
I'm just thinking in the used marked there are plenty of this laptop but maybe not with your prefered keyboard layout.

Ouch, that thing is nasty.

Must've reported at least a dozen better fully AROS compatible laptops over the years.

Been using a 2.9ghz i5 + geforce 540M based laptop for AROS for a few years now.
Have mentioned it dozens of times, but no-one listens, so I stopped trying to help.

Last time I ever try to help here, but it's so very, very simple and again, something I've said so many times Im sick of saying it.....

ich7, 8, 9 and 10 based systems work great.

That covers from pentium 4 through to atoms, through to core2 through to socket 1366 and 1156 (and some 1155) core i3, i5 and i7 systems.

There, all the details you really need. And clear enough that even a half witted monkey can understand.

Please tell me amigans are at least as clever as half witted monkeys?

@fishy_fis

Gforce driver is buggy as hell. Intel gfx driver is very stable and good. You don't even come up with a specific model as usual. This laptop is very nice for AROS. What software for AROS would you require more?
You are negative as usual. Noone like your negative posts if it is amiga, vampire or whatever.
Someone are trying to do something for this platform and you do nothing as usual.
You probably don't have the skill to do anything but native comments.

Stop thinking you are so smart and measure other people's intelligence against computer science.
Get a life!

Here is video of how to set up WiFi network.

https://youtu.be/pVwppm5ukOk

It is as easy that from wireless manager it is possible to connect directly to the networks that are scanned but it is not possible to save your network from there. That I show you how to do in this video.
Maybe at a later stage a save button will be implemented in the wifeless manager but that is not up to me.
