New AspireOS version is out. This AROS distribution target special hardware.

Have a look here for hardware compatible with AspireOS.

https://sites.google.com/site/arosaspireone/about-aspire-one

Download AspireOS v.2.2 from here.

www.aspireos.com

Here is what is new in this version.

After some bug reports to Neil "AROS Developer" he fixed 2 important things.

1. There been some problems with ata.device. First of all the optical drive on DELL D520 could behave strange. From debug I could see some error messaging about dma error. Not only that, but after boot there was this CD2:bad icon on workbench. It is now gone and everthing is working good. Huge thanks to Neil.

2. After configuring USB devices like joysticks, the configurations where not loaded at startup. It is now working as should.

Odyssey web-browser got a new version of SSL (Secure sockets layer). This means that much more web-pages are working again, like G-mail. Video streaming is not working, but never worked any good anyway. Don't try to play video. It will crash the browser. It is being looked at by our developers. Huge thx to "ch1ll" for making this happen.

I added WHD-Menu ready configured. Our trusty developer "Yannick" did a new version of this program. It is now for you to add Your WHD games to the games folder, inside whdmenu folder and you are ready to play any classic 68k game. I used a lot of time with the Amiga 68k configuration file and should now work as good as possible.

ZuneView got updated. Now much more easy to scale images.

We now have the "Installer". That makes it more easy to install programs that make use of it. Maybe future updates to AspireOS codename "Obitus" will be done that way.

I added the Playstation 1 Emulator. It is working real good with AspireOS. Also configured by me for best possible experience.

There been some reports about the AspireOS archive being corruped. It realy was not, but you needed a recent version of rar archiver that supports rar4. I then decided to not pack With rar4 anymore to prevent that problem from happening.

Unless you have AROS already install on internal storage drive, the new version of AspireOS, codename "OBitus" will not boot from optical. Sorry about that. A new release is planed very soon.

@nikosidis

Thanks for the new release, why no Virtual Machine support yet? Will that be coming in the future? At least Virtual Box and VMware support soon? It’s always nice to see new developments for AROS.

@DiscreetFX

My idea of AspireOS is to target dedicated hardware.
If there is enough request I could do a more genetic version.
Would you be interested in a version with very limited software?
The reason I ask is that some of the software included in AspireOS
require 3D hardware. That software I must take out, together with
other software that got special configurations.

New update. Now the new ata.device works as it should.
Please test and report.

@paolone

It would be awesome if a new version of Aladdin4D for AROS, AmigaOS & MorphOS came out.

@nikosidis

Thanx for the new release. What cheap reliable hardware do you recommend to test this?

@DiscreetFX

Thx for the interest.
Dell latitude D520 is what I use.

It is a very nice laptop for AROS in general.

Can be found very cheap on eBay.

No problem, I love seeing new versions of AROS. It’s a great OS and a lot of hard work has gone into it for many years.

@nikosidis

Thanks for the update, now I can boot AspireOS from CD on my Acer Aspire One.

However I haven't been able to install to internal disk in Acer Aspire One. HDToolbox shows no units on ata.device ?

There is a fully functional 149 GB HDD in Acer Aspire One.

Is there a special requirement for internal HDD ?

I think that's the right approach. I know you like your Dell laptop, but I would rather have something *new* and relatively inexpensive. The RPi3 would be ideal, but of course that's not ready yet. Perhaps an X86_64 SBC such as the ODROID-H2 would make a good target system.

ODROID-H2

Or maybe not...

But, Intel UEFI firmware doesn't support CSM Version 2.0 for legacy OS booting such as DOS, XP, Windows 7 and so on.

There's always a snag.

@SinanG

No requirements. All HDD should work but there is a file size limit in SFS. 128GB per partition is max.

@bison

hopefully there will be soon a native aros version for Raspberry and the developer even seems to be interested to add more ARM hardware in future. That would be great, to have different cheap hardware available that is full supported and easy to install...

Speaking with Zoltan (dev of qemu sam460) we think why Aros dont support VirtIO and Virgl can be cool have it working inside the qemu VM with the full support of hw accelerations.
