Hello

When I boot my Workbench 4.1 with my new USB 2 TB HD it freezes the AmigaOS 4.1.

Has anyone experienced this?

Can I boot with the new HD connected?

I remember that when it was first times conected after beng received 3 or 4 weeks ago it was prefectly bootable and usable too on Workbench

@newlight

Perhaps it is "validating", in which case the system will freeze until it is finished. To check, boot the system from the CD and open a Shell. Type "info devices" to see its state.

Is this an external HDD?

And is it formatted as PC NTFS or another format?

Sometimes OS4 can get confused by USB devices inserted. The only way around it currently is to remove the offending device until bootup.

In the meantime you could see how far the bootup gets by adding this to the top of the S:Startup-Sequence.

Set echo on

That will list each line as it executes on screen.

@Hypex

I entered the command "Set echo on" and then begun the problems.

AmigaOS 4.1 doesnt boot

(Set: unknown command)

On AmigaDOS's window it doesn't allow me to edit S:Startup-Sequence neither with Edit or Notepad.

Any ideas?

What is wrong?

How to restore my AmigaOS 4.1 FE system?

As the startup-squence is not yet run when you are in the initial AmigaDOS window, the paths are not yet set to the different dirs of Amigados. Please try to use the full path to run those programs, e.g. "Sys:utilities/Notepad".

Thank you Gregor but I solved the problem before pointing and executing Notepad.

Deleted the command at the top and all ran well again.

Thanks for your support but...

I remind you that the problem was the 2 TB HD freezeing my WB

I'm sorry to say that if the Set command fails AmigaDOS is screwed on your system as that is an internal AmigaDOS command. It's built into DOS. I tested it here and it works as expected.

In a shell I find the Ed command can be best for small editing. What I usually do is type:

Ed X
Then open up the script from the menu. Much easier than typing filenames.

I also have a Seagate 2TB HDD formatted with NTFS. I plugged it in my X1000 USB port and it booted fine.

However my case has a dedicated USB3 port. A USB2 port next to it fails to mount the drive when plugged in after Workbench has loaded.

I wonder if this is a power issue. Where about have you plugged it in? And X5000 was it?

Edit: I can confirm there is an issue. In the front USB2 port I can hear the drive trying to spin up. And the Workbench stalls. Pulling it out crashes the mounter and leaves the T:usb.log littered with read errors. My front USB3 port works fine.

I don't know why power is an issue. The same drive requires a dual USB cable when plugged into my PowerBook. It works fine when plugged directly into my ten year old laptop with Linux. But fails with Windows. Computers are strange.

Yeah on Ubuntu Linux it works here too.

Will a USB2 to USB3 cable will solve the problem here?

If yes can anyone provide a link for a new one?

Thanks

Something like this:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-2-0-Female-to-2-Dual-USB-Male-Power-Adapter-Y-Splitter-Cable-Cord-Connector-/321396229146

Apart from that. Where have you plugged it in? Does your case have any "blue" USB3 ports?

Another alternative is a powered USB hub.

I searched time ago but I don't know if I have to go for a USB 3.0 Male with two conectors at the end.

I only want to connect my USB 2 TB HD with a USB 2.0 to the tower connector and one or two USB 3.0 connectors.

Can anybody point me to the place where I can buy such a cable?

Thanks in advance

The cable I have is simply USB2. Well it isn't a USB3 one, that I know. It's also called a Y cable. It has two males mated to a female. LOL. It draws power from both sockets while just using data lines in one socket.

I've also seen a dual cable that plugged direct into the back of a drive. I didn't know if there was a USB standard for this. But it look like it matched my Seagate drive.

As to where any common computer shop should stock them.

If you are in spain then this would be the closest Amiga store: https://amigastore.eu

But I didn't see any USB cable on site.
