G'day,

I'm going to be grilled on the scene here in Oz next week at AmiWest, so I thought I'd best swat up on the "other" interstate groups.

Last time I visited the Amiga scene in Melbourne was 2003, and I'm sure it;s changed. What about Adelaide? Perth? Brissie? Anyone down in Tassie? Up in Darwin?

Don't care if you're only interested in Classics, or MorphOS or AROS or OS4 - I'd like to hear from you to get an idea of how alive the scene is in the country.

As an example, the Sydney Amiga Users Group (SAUG) still meets once a month, to discuss and play with (mainly) Classic machines. I'd like to be able to say similar things about the other cities.

Since you've brought up the subject I feel an update is in order. The Melbourne scene is as active as ever. MAUG in the NW averages ten people a meeting. New people come from time to time. AUG in the SW is quite popular and has an average of 20 people at meetings and even more.

Both clubs have an active online presence with popular Facebook groups. This also attracts interstate and online Amiga people. MAUG still has the email list and AUG still has a website.

I brought my X1000 to the last MAUG meeting and it's been a while. So it gave some people the chance to see one of the new "X" machines. Of course it's not the latest X5000 but it hadn't been out for a run in a while. I got worried when I booted it up and only had a low res mode. Then determined it was because the DVI cable was out and plugging it in didn't work as well as VGA and a hard reboot was needed for all the screen modes to work again. Modern standards are annoying.

Both clubs have a major focus on the Classic scene. The Vampire pretty much has taken the scene by storm. At MAUG they tend to debug hardware issues including Vampire cards. At AUG they tend play games and are right into Vampire cards.

Hi Tony, firstly was awesome meeting you and Trevor some years ago in Sydney :)

Yes in Brisbane we have meetings once a month in Brisbane, various locations. Info on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/AmigaRetroBrisbane/
Also if you search for Australian Amiga groups you will find more.

Lots of very interesting projects :)

Some developers such as myself work mostly in the classic scene, eg new game ”Reshoot Proxima III”.

You're welcome. Have a good trip. You can be there for those of us that won't make it in Amiga spirit.

There used to be an Amiga user group in Canberra called Canberra Amiga Users Society (CAUS) but it was unincorporated some nine years ago. Some of the former members still meet over pizza at my place on Saturday nights.

You might remember me as one of the organisers the Amiga Down Under '99 show that was held in Canberra and of the Canberra leg of the AmigaOS 4 Roadshow.

Because the Sydney Amiga User Group site may be geo-blocked to except those in Australia, I've put an edited copy of the site at

https://www.commodore.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&p=18785#p18785

and at

The geo-block may be gone for now. So, their regular website should be working. http://www.saug.org.au
