| I saw the announcement today that another batch of ACube Sam460cr's is coming soon, and I'm very interested in replacing my old AmigaOne. But there is one small thing that worries me. Take a look at the webpage here:
http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=756
You can see that there is a small fan on the board. My AmigaOne micro and AmigaOne both have small fans like this and they are loud as hell! That is one of the reasons why I want to replace them. So I am a bit concerned about this.
Does anyone have a Sam460cr and if so, can you tell me if the fan is loud?
I bought a Vampire 4 Standalone last year and it has no fan at all, and is totally silent. I would love an OS4 capable Amiga that is also totally silent!
Feedback from Sam460cr owners would be much appreciated!

I have a silent sam 460ex. It's silent because it uses:
Radeon Sapphire AMD 6450 gfx card which is a low power low profile PicoPSU adapter and a laptop PSU with a barrel connector and kettle plug Solid state disks only I've thought about putting a small CPU fan on it, apparently if you run a 12V fan at 5V it'll be enough and super silent. Acube told me "We used modified molex to 3 pin adapters with a 12V fan running at 5 V so in this configuration it is very silent. You can use a 40x40x15 fan."
So really the loudest thing would be the fan on a gfx card if you go for a more powerful one. the 6450 unfortunately doesn't do 3D GL or the new video acceleration. So I might change it for a newer one like an RX 550. I didn't find any faster low profile, passive cooling with low-ish power draw cards apart from the 6450 yet. The fan would be the least of your worries with a CR board.
lack of expansion due to no onboard anything. _________________ 1 AmigaOne G4XE (OS4 Pre-Release Update4) Minimig Sam440ep + OS4.1FE Sam460cr + OS4.1FE |

That's not really helpful is it. Unless you want a super powerful beast, in which case buy an X5000, you can get a great experience with a Sam board. I recommend ditching SATA completely, and using USB sticks for your main drives. It has loads of USB ports built in.
I use it with the 6450 card, a 3com wifi card, and if you have the CR version you'll need sound so get one of the new ones supported buy the new HD Audio driver for your PCIE slot. For everything else, including CD/DVD if you really even need it in 2021, use external USB devices. I put mine in a really small case and it looks great next to a macbook.

You could replace the small fan with a langer one 60 or 80mm with fan adapter.
I did this with my x1000, which was really quiet after that. My Sam460 did not have a fan, I don't know why Acube put one on the 460cr. Both are 1,1Ghz.
I used a passive 2-slot RadeonHD 7750 Sapphire with a flatcable. Last edited by bennymee on 05-Apr-2021 at 05:46 PM. Last edited by bennymee on 05-Apr-2021 at 05:45 PM. Last edited by bennymee on 05-Apr-2021 at 05:44 PM.

I replaced the stock fan on my A1 with a Northbridge heatsink and a fan attached to the PCI slots using a Zalman fan bracket and a speed controller. This combination seems to work really well and I can recommend it to anyone.
I’m sure you could do something similar with with the Sam, too. _________________ "Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. Study hard, be evil." |

lol what's next, a non functional mouse will lead you throwing a monitor away as well? Changing the fans of the A1 with Noctua or Noiseblocer along with antivibration frames and rubber screws is not worthy to be considered as an option? _________________

Sam460 has only USB2, max transferee speed of 480 Mbps, SATA II has max transferee speed of 1500 Mbps. So, with USB you have only 1/3 of speed, and you might need it if you’re playing movies.
There are interesting adapters called PCIE switch’s that can be interesting for Sam460’s, I believe they do require a driver, something we do not have sadly.
I have seen some youtubers play around with this on raspberry pi.

Silicon Image 3114/3512 with Sata 1.0 is capable of 1500 Mbps (not 1.5 Mbps). After overhead you have 1200 Mbps left. So yes, 480/1200 = 40% USB speed compared to SATA speed. |

Sam460ex USB 2.0 speed is fast enough for video playback . One test that I ran over the weekend gone was to playback a 12.5GB full 4K (3840x2160 24.00fps) video file saved to a NTFS formated USB Thumb drive. No probelm with the video playback. Seeking back and forth was more responsive than on my old model 4 core pc.
