| Hi
I just have installed my new MAC ibook G4 12" laptop. It is going to replace my older imac.
What I liked about the ibook: just take it out of the box, fire it up and you're nearly online. Actually it asked for a FireWire (6/6) cable if I wanted to have all my old data and programs from imac on my new ibook. It took about an hour then all my data and progs were on my ibook. Everything worked like I was used on my imac. Only 1 progs needed to be reinstalled (Missing Sync for Palm PDAs).
On the iconbar many icons were missing, as I had the according progs on another partition on my imac. I just draged all progs from the imac application partition to the new ibook application folder. All progs were running without the need to configure anything! That is USER-FRIENDLINESS!!!
Now I'm confindent to upgrade my PowerMAC G4 at work to a new iMAC G5 B-)
This also works on Amigas but you still have to copy or configure the user-startup sequence. Lets hope AOS 4+ will become as easy to move as MAC OS X.
So I can't understand why people still use Windows, where you are just forced to reinstall everything from scratch.

My Amiga motherboard has been in the shop for about six weeks. This computer is a Power Mac G3 230 using 9.2.2. I am no fan of 9.2.2 as compared to the Amiga 3.9 that I was using, but I have given a lot of thought about purchasing the best super wammy out there in OSX. I've even gone so far as to tell myself to wait till the next OSX upgrade comes out and then go for it. In the back of my mind is the thought that the G5 processor may have a hard time going beyond 2.5 GHz or else they have gone beyond that - after all it has been a year with no processor upgrade. So I ask myself Do I wait till the G6 processor or ? No matter what direction I go be it Amiga or Mac I seem to be waiting or waiting. All I know is that I want a complete ready to run Amiga out of the box and a Mac to do intensive graphics and I don't want to think about buying another computer for several years.
Ah yes - more dreams.

The 970GX is waiting in the wings as is the 970MP - both confirmed by IBM (intentionally or not).
The 970FX uses a farily coservative silicon process so has room to improve - I expect we'll see the results of that soon.

The PPE in the Cell is a full PowerPC CPU and is likely to be released at some point as a stand-alone device. Should give 970 (or better)* grade computing power at much lower power consumption figures - it'll also likely be dual core...
*Some types of computations scale with clock frequency and needless to say these should be pretty well suited to a 4GHz CPU..._________________ Whyzzat? |

| I too enjoy using OSX on the G5. The thing I dislike though is the lack of snappiness in the interface at times. Like using Maya on OSX vs. Win32. The Win32 version never gets sluggish at all, while the menus and such never seem quite as responsive as they should be under OSX. That and the fact that I have yet to be able to find a truly comfortable response in mouse movement.
The Mac thing I like the most though, is the keyboard. I use it on a KVM between all the machines at my desk. Last edited by PolygonSoup on 18-Mar-2005 at 01:59 AM.

Well, you probably won't need to wait that long. Persistent rumors say that MacOSX Tiger will be presented on April 1st (the 29th anniversary of the founding of Apple Inc.) and go on sale on april 15th.
But after that, the development cycle of MacOSX will get longer, so we probably won't see another major upgrade for another two years. I think after Tiger gets out, it's a really good time to buy macs. It also helps signalling, that we're really tired of Windows PCs and we need another mainstream alternative.
Also all macs according to rumors will be standard with 512 MB RAM, when Tiger comes out, so you'll save those $ on buying an additional RAM block. |

No offense to the thread, but OS X is a slow, boated piece of s***. Even windows runs faster on lower end hardware. And what about Apple's lies that the G5 mac is the fastest personal computer in the world -- pure bulls***. Let's not forget that Apple is suing news sites to reveal their sources and basically killed off all the mac clones. I can't believe that Amiga users of all people would support a company like Apple. Their tech support sucks too. I'll take my Linux and AOS anyday, thank you! |

I had OS X running on my iMAC G3 (500 MHz) 270 MB RAM since 10.2 and the only software that was slow was MS Office for MAC OS X! Normally I use Works or now Page to write docs, but I need MS Office because all docs I get send are either WORD or Excel files.
On my iBook G4 1,2 GHz 512 MB RAM MS Office is still slow. But OS X runs definetly fast enough! It is not as fast as pre OS X but you can't compare that! 2 completely different approaches! OS X is actually a complete UNIX clone with some quirks! It isn't easy to setup a RAW printer, though it's hidden inside but you have to go via a browser and internal IP address!
I've seen and worked on G5 PowerMACs with OS X. My new MAC at work will be a G5 iMAC 1,7 GHz I suppose it will run faster but I never had any problems with OS X running under G4 CPUs.
Windows is always slow compared to any OS!
As for AOS it's one of the fastest and most responsive OS out there!

It's "Mac" not "MAC", sorry to be picky but it really gets on my nerves (it's like some keeps shouting it), plus a MAC is something entirely different. |

Having been a windows user for over 13 years (good ole 3.0 ) and used every single version of windows between that and XP (and admined various Server versions) I can safely say that you're talking complete arse.

It wasn't Bull****, it was debatable. When will marketing folk learn not to use benchmarks?

Because Microsoft didn't try suing a kid for having a similar domain name.

Because the Amiga Inc. don't do the same? It's a business decision. Apple are a hardware not software company. They're not evil for doing it. Had they not of done, the company wouldn't of survived out of the 90's

I can't believe that Amiga users can be so ignorant. Well after 7 years of it I guess I can. Buying products that best suit you is not being a fan boy. AmigaOS is not finished (YET) so you can't compare it to OS X. I can't say I've found any of my Linux experiences particularly enjoyable either, but I'm not going to bash it with utter twaddle.

That's a matter of opinion I guess. But the one time i had to deal with Apple support was, contary to expectation, one of my better industry customer service experinces by a mile.

That's lovely, but then no-one said otherwise. Why can't computer users just let each other be? Why the zealotry? |

Have you actually used the latest OS X? It used to be slow in the 10.0 and 10.1 days, but 10.2 was pretty nippy and 10.3 is even faster - efficient, responsive, damn good OS.
Windows faster? Don't make me laugh. I used 2000 and XP on hardware supposedly better than that of my Powerbook, and both were average to poor. Unresponsive at times, buggy and bloated. I can't believe anyone would actually want to put up with it. Last edited by MetalJoe on 18-Mar-2005 at 08:35 AM.

I got to agree OSX is good damn good i have it on 3 macs here 2 g3s@500mhz and a nice responsive g5 osx isnt slow after using a p4@3200mhz the g5 kicks serious ass windows is bog slow and totaly unresposive you would need a quad p4@50,000mhz to copete
but the A1 with os4 still rules all of them !!!!!! theres just no competition to the good old amiga os |

Now that you've done the firewire transfer thing, you can even turn the old machine into an external Firewire HD case.
You just type some commands into a terminal window, and it's done. When you want to put it back to a computer, I think you just reset the PRAM.
I have the instructions on my Amiga, will post them later... |

You sure you ain't talking about MS and Windows?
OSX is nice. But like windows, it loves RAM. The more the merrier.
The G5 is damn fast. The mini-mac runs circles around one of them cheap Dell boxes in certain tests, thanks to the Altivec unit.
Apple wants to know who violated their NDAs. Anything wrong with finding out who leaked confidential business info, which costs investors money?
Killing off the clones. Isn't that ancient history by now? Get a life!
Tech support? Do they actually have that in the windows world? Betcha your 90 days starts from the moment you open the box in that world. Apple tech support is very prompt, and very helpful. They'll even call and offer a deal on an extended warranty before your warranty expires. The tech will even speak English natively.
PS: Every Mac sold is one less PC out there (unfortunately, it may mean one more PC in the landfill.)
Now, have you ever seen a Mac, or touched one? Or are you just repeating a bunch of myths you've been led to believe by the MS propogandists? |

RE: OSX being slow. The user is right in some aspects. The first couple OSX releases were a slow down on the system. It's a more demanding OS then 7 or 8 was and of course more stable then 9. But we're talking different hardware and different OSes so it's hard to compare. But for $/performance ratio I think the PC has it beat.

Business decisions aren't evil but they may have good or bad incomes. I for one think if the man-child Jobs hadn't have killed off the clones and instead put more clones in place and let Dell/Compaq and some bigger names in that Macs might be more then the small 2-3% of the market they are today.
Apple isn't a hardware or software company. It's a services company. The biggest money maker for them is now iPod and iTunes. That's a device (hardware/software) but the iTunes service is their big money maker as you need the device to get into the service.

I like many users have tried Linux both x86 and AmigaPPC versions. It's fine. But, I'm not drawn to it. I don't think many others either, long term. One recent survey concluded that 80% of all Linux included desktops sold now run a pirated version of Windows, which is where I get I don't think many others like Linux long term.

I wish that were the case. Apple's % of marketshare is constantly declining. Of course their old Macs go somewhere, just as old PC's do.
iPod/iTunes is predicted to help stablize the fall of their desktop % marketshare over the next couple of years. However, after that they're predicted to continue their gradual decline.
Over the past 5+ years it appears the majority of Macs are sold to pre-existing Mac owners. Sounds familiar? W/o iTunes Mac may well have entered the hobbiest realm of the AmigaOne...

| I love a good Mac vs everything debate!
Mac OSX being slow?! thats first for me! Im running 10.2.8 and its damn fast, Office X is a little sluggish at times but we all know why dont we? same reason why MSN is crap for Mac and IE infact.
but anyway, Tiger is gonna be great, the new Graphics rending coupled with the new processors is gonna resullt in some amazing machines!
Windoze sucks!!! Ive used every version since 3.1 and its a big bloated piece of plop!!! (but then MacOS before 10 was pretty crappy too)

No the user is completely wrong. OS X as it stands is not slow (in the mainstream sense not the Amiga sense). Why are you mentioning versions of the software that are no longer available? that's like me saying that Windows has terrible USB support because of Windows 98.

I never said that. but it's hypocritcal to use that as a point against one party when the other has also done it. That's like saying MorphOS is crapper than AmigaOS because it doesn't support the latest nVidia GFX cards.

Apple was bleeding money out of it's arse when the Clones were about. What saved the company? The iMac, that is Hardware.

Well you seem to know better than Apple's CEO and VPs. Apple is a Hardware company. The main income of Apple is hardware, it always has been. iTunes store is not thier biggest money maker, in fact it's barely made them anything nor is it the biggest draw for the iPod. Yes it is a benefit, but the iPod was doing very well long before the store came along.

I somehow doubt it.
People were predicting that Apple would be dead by 1998, predictions mean jack. |
