It's a very long story and I'm not sure I understand it all yet.
Basically we start with Escom, the winner of the first Commodore bankrupcy auction, going bankrupt itself. So cue auction number two, with a bunch of interested companies.
VIScorp, a set-top box company, who was attempting to get a license for AmigaOS for settop boxes, was one of the companies in the running.
Bill Buck and his wife put up some money for VIScorp's bid, but it fell through as VIScorp itself ran out of money and went bankrupt.
Gateway wound up with the whole shebang. But they didn't really do anything with the Amiga part, so Bill McEwen and co. started Amino and bought out the Amiga rights from Gateway, leaving them with just the patents.
In the meantime, there was this company bPlan, which formed from some of the people who used to work for Phase 5, which had also gone bankrupt in the mean time. bPlan was originally supposed to be a licensee for official AmigaOne hardware and OS4, like a second Eyetech. The pending partnership agreement was even on Amiga, Inc. (formerly Amino)'s website.
But then Amiga Inc. ran out of money and the deal fell through, bPlan pseudo-merged with Thendic and became Genesi (although nobody knows exactly how this worked) and took up this MorphOS thing that was originally running on old Phase5 accelerator boards and ported it to the new Pegasos PPC motherboard.
Then we got all sorts of silly lawsuits and things. Amiga, Inc. really had run out of money by this time and Bill McEwen had to show up in court admitting this fact.
Then the mysterious Garry Hare and KMOS entered the picture. The lawsuit kind of fell into nothingness. AmigaOS 4 prerelease for the AmigaOne was released.
Then Genesi ran out of money. They had been funded by Pretory, a company supplying armed guards to the French national airline, but scandals brought down Pretory and when the money flow stopped, Genesi rapidly ran out of funds and couldn't pay developers.
I think that's pretty much where we are now. It's all been kind of a waste of energy, dividing an already small community.
I welcome any corrections to this story, as it will eventually encompass an entire chapter of my book on the history of the Amiga. |

I think you can find tons of stuff on these forums. It's a very complicated story -- I don't think anyone has it down 100%. |

The history will depend on who tells it.
The makers of the Pegasos PPC motherboard, Bill Buck and company, made some lawsuits against Amiga. Amiga lost - they have to port "Digital Environment" I think it's called "Amiga Anywhere" now to some hardware. last I heard Amiga was still waiting for this hardware so they could start the port.
Amiga, Inc was bought out by KMOS. KMOS defended Amiga in the final days of the lawsuit and truly pulled what was left of the Amiga out of the fire. Amiga, Inc could have lost something of real value had that not happened. It seems that the plaintiff was looking for rights to Amiga OS. Amiga, Inc has since been aquired by KMOS. Last I heard Billy Mac and Fleecy are still on board. Garry Peake was let go. Don't know about anyone else. Dean Brown (hardware guy) was in there at some point but I have not heard anything.
Amiga OS4 prerelease has been released and updated for the new Amiga One PPC hardware built by Eyetech. Still waiting on OS4 final. Then of course we should be getting into OS4.1, 4.2, etc...
MorphOS being backed by Bill Buck and company has since stopped supporting it. There is still an effort to keep it alive much in the way Aros and many other OS's are. I personly dont know if anyone actually owns MorphOS.
During this time the flame fests between the Blue crowd (Pegasos motherboard running MorphOS) and the red crowd (Amiga One supporters) were legendary. 2001-2004 I would say. Possibly started around the time you left 1999. Depends on what forum. I got sick of it. I finaly found AmigaWorld where the forums are kept more or less flame free. Thanks guys.
The flame fests seem to have subsided but I rarely read any sites other then Amiga World. It seems I occasionaly hear about some less than readable things still going on with other sites. But not as bad as a couple of years ago.
I hope this sheds a little on whats been going on. From my limited point of view of course.

Squacking vultures bit and pecked at each other in order to eat all of the carrion at their feet all by themselves.
Just then, a bunny wabbit grabed the nearly dead miggy and dragged it to a hospital.
Right now we are standing outside the emergency room as the doctors inside do their thing. The blinds have been drawn and occasionaly we hear the beep of machinery, but no doctor has come out to give us the status of the patient yet. (Though the bunny wabbit keeps waving at us and giving us the thumbs up and smiling)

And thus is my recommended daily requirement for surreal forum postings made. Thanks mate, I'll be scratching my head over that piece of mental imagery for the rest of the day...

your analogy seems to be very plausable, i didnt realise how close the amiga name came to being bought and being stuck on some crappy mp3 player like its daddy commodore haha, KMOS seem to have money behind them so thats good, he seems like a decent bloke. _________________ Lorn sorch ne jaa coo! The trouble with threads like this is, people will soon take umbrage at someones account of the history (whatever it may have been) and this thread will descend into a flame war as have all the other threads before it.
@everyone else
First sign of flames and this thread is locked.
EDIT: Typo corrected. Last edited by L8-X on 06-May-2005 at 08:07 AM.

So who owns the right to Commodore these days?, or shouldn't I ask?

I think the previous owners had this generic mp3 player and stuck the commodore name on it, giving the mp3 players names like vic-20 and pet-3 or something.. its sad seeing a company which was a big player being stripped to pieces like that, i DO NOT want that happeneing to the amiga.
the same sort of thing happened to atari,. the name being sold to infogrammes.. i suppose amiga is lucky it hasnt had a similar fate, maybe because it has something otherr than its name to add value. :)
I think a book is a great idea, make sure you do your research and give us details we cant find on the internet, and i will be sure to buy it! :)
