@TrevorDick

5. Maybe, perhaps if.. (explain in response)

I would if I have some control in my hard earned cash not being misused or taken as a licence to take forever to produce some results. I would rather be a shareholder in a software project where the developers are answerable to me as opposed to giving someone some money without any clause to produce.

Only if I knew what kind of projects this would entail. If it's just unrealistic stuff then no thanks.

How would we decide which project gets what amount of money?

e.g. If there is £1000 in the pot and there are 3 projects to develop different software - how do we decide the value of that software?

I can't really see this working - pre-pay schemes always seem to end up being messy.

@-Sam-

It could be setup as a company model i guess, where the organisation in place set up demands for new software and then request bids for the developments, that way the developer gets what he feels is enough, the donators can decide if it is worth it and upon completion of the project, money is paid. That way there wont be duplicate efforts either as only one developer/company gets the job so to speak.

The AROS bounty system seems to have some success. Donors can decide which projects to donate to. Not being able to decide what you donations are used for (from a preselected number of projects) would simply just not work.

@TrevorDick

I'd like more small projects too. Not only giants like OpenOffice, Gimp or Firefox. But all those nice-to-have-weekend-ports and must-haves like openssh etc.

It depends of what the software in question would be. A good web-browser...then maybe.

@The_Editor

Nah, better buy out Hyperion and after that, spend a monthly amount on paying
the Friedens (small, of course, not that they become highflyers) to further
develop the best OS there is!

@x56h34

Same here depends on what software, i be willing to pay for part of full price of an AmigaOne for anyone in need of an AmigaOne to port or develop her/his software.

Well, that's part of the polls, as well as the other thread here

There are ideas presently, but a big 'up in air' as far as what types of projects, how to determine WHICH projects to have a fair percentage of 'making people happy' (who donate), if hardware should be donated to commercial companies, etc etc....

Fill in your ideas

That's a good point, and may be workable. *sigh* everyone KNOWS how much I love polls (see sig ), but that may wind up being a subject worth discussing if no one gives enoguh feedback on how they would be interested in making donations...

@Samwel

If i had lots of cash i would donate to a specific
project and i would like as many votes as the
amount of cash i am putting in.

But i would like that the idea for the port would
be checked for legal, moral and doable stuff by
the master devs, and yes that means Hyperion
and all top devs working on OS4.

If the light gets green start the port, if it gets
the orange or red light, get to the next importend
project with the cash i donated afther you have
asked me if i want to use that money for that
project instead or for both. We are talking abouth
large amounts of cash here ofcourse, lets say
something above 100 euro/dollars or something.

Just my thoughts here at this moment ofcourse.

@Dirk-B

Can't developers applying for support dress up and dance on a table, send in footage and the best entries every month gets an A1?

Somewhere at the end of 2004 this topic was covered on a similar thread, dubbed the 'Shoe string fund' as a reaction on the term 'shoe string budget' applied to OS4 developement. I would happily donate a 100 Euro and even more to speed up OS4 developement, but it became rapidly apparent that there might be quite a few snakes in the gras.

Simply doling out lump sums from the great heap (wishfull thinking) may result in false competition and therefore shy away developers from the H/W base. A simple case may make this clear:

A bunch of developers is creating an office suite specifically for Amiga and does so silently so as not to arouse early attention and therefore be able to work on it in a steady pace. Their aim is to bring it to market as a thouroughly wroughted piece of S/W, with much potential and ample rewards. In other words a first rate comercial project.
Another equally talented group of developers is trying to port OpenOffice to Amiga and makes this public knowledge loudly, handing out 'progress reports' every fourtnight. Suddenly they run out of capital as the project takes quite a bit longer then anticipated. They knock on the door of the fund and ask for some money. As the OpenOffice title has a ringing name, it is decided unanimously that the project is to receive a financial injection. And as it is clear that there are some rather unforseen obstacles requiring very specialist knowledge unavailable in the initial group of developers and has therefore to be hired from outside for quite some money, the amount handed over is staggering. But, as said, OpenOffice has a ringing name and so there is little objection from the members of the committee.
It is quite clear that in this situation, which comes from my, now heavily swollen, thumb, is counter productive. The first group may abandon ship when they hear of it and may leave the community, maybe even causing a (history proven?) rift in the community.
In other words: BE VERY, VERY, VERY CAREFULL!!!

In my opinion, if things commence, in such a case ONLY a loan can be given! One that HAS TO BE PAID BACK! In a predefined time frame so as to keep the developers on track. And then quite some more precautions. But still I might donate a 100 Euro's or more.

My Euro 0,02.

@nicomen

I like that idea, maybe it is better to donate an A1 + OS4
instead of the cash. This way we would be sure that the
money is spend on the right things.

ps: I dit not know that devs could dance.
