I wasn't finding the OS4 version very stable. I have the 2.5 Dev version here & it looks nice but it's not quite ready for normal day usage.

Maybe you stumbled over some problematic version. But the dev version gets updated frequently, so probably the problems you experienced are long gone now.
Personally I do use it a lot every day and I have no problem with it.

The "7" thing happened to me on my classic & has happened here on my A1. Two different computers. I'm gonna guess that it's one of those extremely rare things that can't easily be traced & has been, unwittingly, ported to OS4 too.

Just because it happens on two different machines with two different (well, sort of) OSes, indicates that the problem lies in what has not changed. And what has stayed the same? Well, the user!
I'm not saying you're an incompent or whatever, just that it could be that some utility you use or some setting could be causing this. After all, as rare as it can be, how come that nobody else has ever experienced it?
I wish I were more useful than this...

And net usage plus music still eventually hangs the machine with upd3, like I've described in many threads earlier for upd1 and 2

Have you tried tunenet? I've had crashes with both Aminetradio and Amplifier but TuneNet runs fine.

Nothing ever crashes!! I have hangs, complete machine hangs, not crashes. (except in other situations when a program bugs out in some other way..).

I'm running TuneNet now to see when (not if) it hangs. Then thing is that I've gotten this kind of hang when playing with ProPlayer (or some like it) while FTPing data. So I doubt the player itself is the cause.

There is a low-level deadlock somewhere that happens in extremely rare situations (probability calculated on several hundred interrupts per second, yet it takes hours, or even days of network traffic before I get a hang). Perhaps there is something that is not completely waterproof regarding interrupt coming from, and being handled by, the VIA, ahi.device and eth3com causing this. Perhaps one needs to have an Audigy and being connected with 100Mbit to a switch for this to happen..? I get a lot of ARP traffic it seems. A couple of packets a second.

I really would like to have this problem gone because I can't rely on the machine as a server! Sometimes while playing music (I'm always playing music) a friend enters the FTP without me noticing it, and suddently I have a hang. When I boot up again I see the FTPd going active immediately and then I know someone was/is using LeechFTP on the other side (which automatically reconnects when interrupted).

@The_Editor

No considerably, but slightly. I got about 4MB/s using AmFTP before, now I got 6.5MB/s.

@Toaks &

Hi Tony,

Regarding Post #14.
"I'm fed up of typing everything a million times..."
Agreed.

In the "Features" section of AW there is at the top an entry for "OS4 Zone".
Dave (Wiffy) has tried very hard to get people to make entries here.
If people write their instructions one time and submit the instructions to that
section, then all we should have to write from then on is - "See OS4 Zone please".
Just like - "Read the FAQ please".

Best Wishes,
#6
