Installing MacOS 7.5.3 from Apple site in Shapeshifter

I managed to get my partition mac formatted and can start from a bootfile. Now I'd like to install MacOS.

I downloaded version 7.5.3 from the Apple site and expanded the files using StuffIt Expander on the bootfile. Now I get some files from which one is an application file; when I doubleclick it nothing happens...

I checked maconamiga.amigaworld.net but that has no further information on this problem.

@Flashlab

As I remember, the System 7.5.x disks need to be mounted under MacOS so you can install the OS. There is a minimal hardfile that you can download which has all the tools you need to prep and install MacOS from the disks on Apples site.

I'm installing MacOS 7.5.3 right now. Problem was I couldn't extract the files with the 7.0.1 bootfile; I needed a 7.5 bootfile for that.

Also downloading the files on my Amiga and copying them to the Mac using the MAC Handler corrupted the files; I read something about resource forks...

I downloaded the files on my PC and combined them into a installation bootfile. Burned that to cd (couldn't get Samba working:)) and used that to boot on Shapeshifter. But complicated but it works!

Yeah tried that, but the problem I was looking for wasn't there.

Now I face the challenge of setting up my Ethernet card for use within ShapeShifter.

You don't need MacTCP to be online with ShapeShifter. You can use MiamiDX and
vlink and connect to the Internet from the Amiga side and have TCP on the MacSide as well. This worked flawesly for me for the programs I tryed under MacOS (IRC and FTP).

@drHirudo

I believe I used FreePPP (v2.6 iirc), and just copied the settings as shown in Genesis over to the relevant parts of FreePPP.

The Mac uses a data and a resource fork. The resource fork is basically the icon part, which amongst other things, describes to the mac what the data fork part actually is. The data fork contains the application/exe. You need to copy both over to Shapeshifter for it to work. I remember there being a command you need to specify from the amiga side when using MAC: to differentiate whether you are copying the resource or data fork over.

i switched to Open transport instead of Classic networking and then you can properly configure TCP/IP. That works!

@Flashlab

What are the specs of your machine, BTW?

I've got a Mediator-based A1200T with '030/50, 16mb RAM, 40gb HDD; would love to run Mac OS, but not sure if I'll need to upgrade my accelerator card first.

Good job troubleshooting MacOS installations, despite the resource fork issue with Amiga files. Combining a compatible bootfile was smart for system compatibility reasons. Remember to handle file systems carefully during cross-platform operations in future work. If you encounter more issues or have questions on this topic, feel free to ask!
