As some changes are still going on right now, this will be short and sweet, official announcement later about forum changes.

1. Welcome to the Alt Amiga Forum on AmigaWorld!

2. What is this forum for?
For the discussion of Amiga-like/alternate operating systems, including MorphOS, AROS, and whatever else we may see down the line.

3. What about Commodore 64s? (hatchsi...sheesh! )
Well, general computing is probably the most appropriate for a C64 specific post, although we're open to feedback, and obviously the majority of our current members are focused on Amigas and/or Amiga-like systems.

4. What is an 'Amiga-like' system?
Ok, the unofficial explanation- anything that works similarly, or identical to, AmigaOS, but is not an official Amiga licensed product. Ok, that sounds cheesy, but I'm sure you know what's meant here, right?

5. TOS- have they changed?
Not at this point, no. Trolling, baiting, and flames are not tolerated by anyone, period. If you have no desire to post in this forum, you have the option of not visiting it, but not stopping in to provoke or antagonize. And of course, if you're curious about all things 'Amiga-like,' then feel free to participate in this forum.

6. What about the existing AROS and MorphOS sites?
There are sites dedicated to both AROS and MOS, which do excellent jobs. This forum is not meant to ever come close to being an 'official' site for either of these systems; it is simply here for those current and future members of AW that don't think there is anything wrong with the discussion of other systems.

With that, I see DaveyD beat me to err, first post? Why do I feel like I'm on SlashDot or something?

edit clarification, changed 'systems' to 'operating systems' per DaveyD/staff clarification.

Peg and other alternate hardware unless pertaining specifically to running MOS or Aros on it, currently belongs in the most appropriate place, Amiga General or General Tech, depending on the context.

Well, Emulators have their own forum, in Amiga Emulation , of all places

Obviously there will be some overlap, and possibly a bit of tweaking as things move forward..I'd say that problems that are clearly in the emulator setup belong in, well...you know, Emulation, but there will be some overlap with software occasionally, which is OK.

OS4Emu is a valid question, and right now I'd say..I don't know. Initial thoughts are to post it in here, as at least at this point it does run on MOS, which certainly belongs in this forum, but it also depends on the context in some cases.

I'm unsure I can reply nicely, so umm...are you low on members for the knitting club?

First, thumbs up for this change, guys!

@wegster
Great job! As I already mentioned in the "test" thread, I could only think of one case where I am unsure where to open a topic:
Not-yet-compatible OS4 hardware (such as the open Pegasos) and future hardware. Should I open such a topic under the first forum category since it says "PowerPC Amigas (including PowerPC based Classic Amigas)" there (which is a quite generic description)?
On the other hand, the first category has a focus on OS4 and the hardware forum is titled to be a "support forum"...
I just see that there will be much discussion about potential new hardware in the future. I am still a bit unsure where such discussions would belong. "Amiga Development" maybe? Or does this only include software development? Thanks in advance for a brief clarification.

@hatschi

If the target of the topic will be future hardware for OS4, then it seems right to me that it goes in OS4 Hardware forum. You are specifically talking about generic PPC hardware at that point, and not MorphOS or AROS.

There will, of course, be times when the two topics will spill over, but keep in mind a general rule, what the target OS of your topic is will decide which forum to post it into.

Yep, we've asked this in staff forums as well. This becomes one of those 'grey lines' that would be so much easier if not for all the grey!

The decision we came to is that the PowerPC Amigas category is for 'official' products running, or to be running, AmigaOS4, according to the license holders, effectively Hyperion from a communication standpoint.

For many, the Troika and ACK products may remain 'unknown' as of yet, but Hyperion has confirmed working with them, so by a small stretch, we are treating them as 'official' (potential?) products.

The Open Peg news could have gone in the Alt Amiga section (if it had existed then), in Amiga General Chat, which in the curent forum layout, has taken on more significance than previously, as it is likely to also include 'OS4 speculation' and similar topics.

AmigaOS Development is really targetted at software development and coding, although it's certainly a possibility that there's a need for a 'Amiga Future Discussion' forum, which would cover things better, as there will be some topics or discssions that don't quite 'cleanly' fit into the existing categories, so we'll have to adjust as we go.

Sorry if that seems a lame answer, but it's the best I've got right now.

(PS - just don't make the next question, 'what happens if OS4 is ported to a new platform like an Open Peg?'....I've moved way too many threads tonight to think about doing it again soon )

@all

This forum is for Alternative Operating Systems not Alternative Hardware Systems. Speculation about future OS4 hardware should go in the General Amiga Chat forum, the Amiga OS4 Hardware forum is for current hardware.

Hope that clears things up a little

In light of the recent poll we have decided to allow the alt forums on the home page, if this causes too many issues with our members we may have to remove it again. This site is still mainly a community site for the official Amiga OS and Hardware.

Thank you for your cooperation.
