| @Bobsonsirjonny No back-seat? what good is that then?
I miss my old car, a Volvo 480 Turbo, with a bigger charger and 'modified-modified ' chip it did 0-60 in less than 5 sec... for about 6 months. Still, the scrap man liked it, even the large engine-sized hole in the bonnet made him smile! wizz.

Figures, it looked Mercedes-esque, but evidently a model we don't get in the US, only get the SLK320 Kompressor I think it is...which is an OK car/looks nice, but wasn't all that impressed compared to an M3 for example.
Still, I really like the looks of the pic Bobson posted, wouldn't mind taking it for a spin

If you weren't impressed by the Kompressor then forget the "Smart" car.
It's made to be Tiny, Based on the same chassis as ...

It's a Smart Roadster Coupe'
Smart were origionally developed by Mercedes as an eco friendly car.
Smart is a brand of car (short for Swatch Mercedes ART) that started off as a collaboration between Swatch - who make Swiss Watches, and Mercedes. The brand then became part of Daimler Chrysler.
The Roadster Coupe uses a 700cc turbo charged engine - but the weight is sooo low it can shift. It was designed to be reminiscent of old school roadsters such as the Spitfire and MG B. It's just fun, fun, fun! It handles fantastically!

They hold their value really well too - trouble is ppl are reluctant to sell them. I really really want one.. hope the wait isn't too long.
Other wise I'll just have to save up another £10K and get new. But by the time that happens I'll be too old for one! |

| @Bobsonsirjonny Thanks for the link. Hrm, this looks...interesting to drive. It's got a lot of boost evidently in that turbo (~14.7 lbs/1 bar), but still is 0-60MPH in 10 seconds with a nice Elise like weight of ~1700lbs. (Yeah sorry, US/imperial measurements).
I bet it's fun in the turns though
I'm still looking for a pic of the grey mazdaspeed MX-5. 0-60 is more respectable, but still a very tossable, fun car. It's a year or two old now, but unsre what they're going for used, had a friend pick one up for $22,000USD new though, not a bad deal at all.

No such thing, my friend
I was in a local sports car club for a while, and inevitably a guy older than dirt, driving one of these with a rollbar- http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/ISEO-rgbtcspd/customcar/showroom/simon_miata.html
always found the most amazing roads, we'd lose the group and just drive for hours!
(I own the same model, but umm, more modified/faster

It's relative. At one point, I briefly considered cars in the > $50,000 range, but had to be convertible, prefably two seats. Drove a Boxter S (is OK, but amazingly less headroom than Miatas even), BMW M Roadster (pretty sweet but slightly heavy car, very nice though), the SLK Kompressor, and an M3 convertible. Also drove a Toyota Spyder MR-S for the heck of it, but not an S2000 in the lower ranges..
The Boxter was ok, engine was nice, inside layout was nice, lots of electronics bits to cause serious $$ maintenance (electronically programmed shock dampening for example), not sure it was '$65k nice.' Plus, since then, I've embarrassed a few of them with my 'cheap' car, and the expression is priceless on their faces
The BMW M3, in any generation, is simply....an incredible car. I can't stand the dorks who own them as a status symbol- this car is a sports car in sedan clothing, pure and simple, and can be driven off the showroom floor, change brake pads, and be competent on the track. (And I have several friends doing just that with them.). It's over-priced, it's expensive, and god help you if you blow up an M engine (like 8k to replace, or more!!), but this is a gorgeous car to drive.
The M Roadster is basically the M3 bits- brakes, engine, gearbox, shocks, most of the chassis, make into a 2 seat convertible. It has much more in common with the M3 than the Z3 (ick), along with that awesome M3 powerplant and low end torque. Going to convertible could be a bit stiffer and a bit lighter than it is, but this is a pretty impressive ride. Unfortunately, they tend to hold market value, but less so than the 'pure' M3s. Get one if you can afford it, or at least a ride in one
The SLK 320 was...nice. It's a Mercedes, it has 'touches' in it. But it drove as a sedan that was converted or masquerading as a sports car, more than a pure sports car, so while nice, was more of a 'poser' car compared to the near race ready BMW M series. More along the line of most Audis- nice, and can be fast, but more sedan than sports car.
*shrug* Everyone's got different tastes. I think Bobson's car pic looks pretty sweet, but I'd be looking for a replacement engine for it to get it to 5-6 second 0-60 range, or close, then it would be 'perfectly powered'

Mercedes have a Tuning wing called Brabus - they take Roadsters and do exactly just that! - though I think they bring it in at just under 7 seconds - but you pay an arm and a nose for it!!!
The engines are designed to be revved - and they sound sooooo sweet. The gear box is semi automatic - so redlining can force it up a gear if you so wish. If you wish to drive it "manually" you just shift up. Brabus kitted Roadsters have paddle controls just like F1 cars to change up or down.
Comes with ABS and all that safety crap too Last edited by Bobsonsirjonny on 29-Jan-2006 at 09:51 PM.

Yeah, not so cheap but I've wanted an Elise forever.
Ironically, the 'last time through' I decided no car was worth the ~65k USD or so I was looking at (in prior list), but hrm, 42k....I SO don't want another monthly bill, but if I look at too many pics of it in blue or silver, I may have 'no choice!' My self control sucks sometimes on 'gotta have' items now and then!
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. I just really enjoy cars, although there are so few nowadays to get excited over
