AmigaOS4 release date....good or bad???

AmigaOS4.0 final seems to be targetted for launch around christmas 2006 (after recent gossip/announcements) YIHAAAA!!! fingers crossed!!

....BUT as weird as it might seem, MS's multi billion dollar project Windows Vista also seems to lauch at that precise time. (december 2006)

Now this makes me wonder if OS4 is going to dissapear in the shadow of this GIGANTIC MARKETING MACHINE we know will come, and that the release time of OS4 perhaps suddenly is not so good!?

What if this release date suddenly is the most stupid time for a re-lauch of the Amiga/AmigaOS brand. After all it's not funny if our beloved platform drowns in Windows Vista hysteria!!!!

Is it just me worrying too much?, or could this perhaps be a fatal mistake???

@Hondo_DK

I know what you mean, but I don't think the introduction of Vista and OS4.0 at the same time, if that what actually happens will make any difference IMHO.

With what hardware? (People have also asked this recently to "HyperionMP", but weren't given an answer)

Do you really assume that anybody would have to decide between Vista and OS4.0 at that time? Sorry, that's just hilarious.

Yes.

@Hondo_DK:

i think theres no problem of the releases together, because there are enough (thinking and rational) people who dont will support that "DRM-prison" that windows vista offers. That are the voices i hear from many friends of me!

@Hondo_DK

totally different uncompeting markets. it's not a choice between OS4 or Win* for the majority of people interested in OS4. OS4 is a novelty OS mainly for enthusiasts. If it were a competition between the two Win* would totally outclass it in terms of practical everyday use and the range of s/w available. (no decent browser springs to mind)

The only competition OS4 has atm is MorphOS (and maybe AROS) and of course MOS beats it hands down.

@Hondo_DK

You worry to much and your hopes are to high.

If lets say a few thousand people buy the first system that is out,
then that is already great. If in the following times the boards keep
selling to even a few thousands more then that is fantastic.
If all those people start to buy software, games and other stuff then
we can say that we have a running business.

Only then can we say to the world that we have something and that
many are already using the hardware and software products.
So, in my view, the first launch of OS4 will be good for the community
and all that that is more is just great. I dont believe in a take over of the
world with OS4, the hardware and the software that we have now.

@Hondo_DK

I don't think it will directly affect the sales of OS4....unless OS4 fails to be released, then I can see a few people moving on and leaving the platform altogether and perhaps spending the xmas cash on a flash new vista PC.

@hatty

Never used MOS personally, but I'm quite happy with OS4, even the pre-release I have at present and look forward to getting my mitts on the release version....hopefully!

@Hondo_DK

I have Vista RC2 installed on my PC right now. Its basically XP with enhanced security and a reasonably well-thought out facsimilie of Quartz. Personally, when the beta period is over I will be rolling back to XP. Nothing compelling enough to actually buy it. No WinFS. No real enhancements other than the GUI, some security features and some processes now running outside of kernel-space. To be honest, I'd rather spend $50 on Stardock for XP; its a much better deal at this point.

Or better yet, $95 US for Zeta.

OS4 will not suffer one bit. In fact, I think this will actually help push alternative OS's in the marketplace, assuming we could have an up-to-date web browser by release date. I think all developers out there who want OS4 to succeed should immediately suspend their own projects and help in porting Amizilla or KHTML, personally. It is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING at this point.

My opinion was that WE NEED and official Hyperion post about a final release or an update release of OS4...
Why noone will speak to us that?

Tuxedo.

P.S. Especially a beta version for classic ppc Amigas that will get us more developer and visibility...

I have to agree with the others, the two operating systems are not competing aganst each other in any way. Windows can't bury us, only we can.

A question arises here on your rather negative attitude: are you suffering from or enjoying a serious starvation of your favourite drug of late?

EDIT:
I noticed Yo's concern on this matter.

I think you worry too much. Any release of AmigaOS 4.0 is a good release. Ideally on some readily available hardware. Keep in mind this is only the beginning of hopefully many future releases on many more future platforms. Step 1 if you will.

I never agreed with the whole you only get once chance to make an impression stuff. People have the attention span of a knat these days and they are easily swayed by the latest gizmo and quickly forget the previous one.

As for the skeptics, well, tell us something we don't know for once. No really. Just once.

I also believe they promised a release last christmas as well..
I dont see it being released anytime soon considering the lack of hardware.

Well I've heard that porting was in the works for Panda & Samantha so it's wait & see. There was a time after the first A1 came out that ppl were saying os4 would never come out.

It appears we're all in the same boat now, those with h/w don't get Final until the have not's get h/w.

Have you really heard porting is in the works for Samantha? Given the one this weekend wasnt shown running, I'm surprised (pleasantly) if Hyperion has a running board to work the port on. Panda arrived at Troika running and they have mailed one to Hyperion, so work on it being done isnt that surprising.

@Hondo_DK

Dude, I doubt Microsoft needs their marketing machine to overshadow a release of OS4. I'ts not like we're a big market segment. Also, on that point, I doubt that there would be a big (by current Amiga standards) advertising campaign for the launch of OS4 - a couple of posts on a few forums and you'd likely hit 80% to 90% of short-term possible customers.

That said, a couple of well crafted news items riding on the coat-tails of the Vista marketing machine might get us quite a few footnotes on Vista news on news sites; along the lines of "Today Vista was released blah blah blah... and in a blast from the past, the latest evolution of the AmigaOS, OS4, has been released. For futher details visit...".

That I think would possbily get OS4 quite a bit of publicity and hit a much wider (potential) audience.

Just another take on your scenario!
