Does Amiga Inc. actually exist?

I got a reply from McEwen recently and the company is very much still in business. (for better or for worse is up to you to decide)

The most sensible sounding answer I've seen from bbrv iabout why they still bother with Amiga stuff or the OS4 community, is that they've used AmigaOS for a long time, and like it. It's too bad that it seems hard to get such simple answers at times...

Given bbrv directly represent Genesi's most senior management and hold the keys to Genesi's long term corporate vision and direction that "we like it" answer is just laughable to me. It may seem like a direct answer on the surface but I think it is just a way of saying "we haven't the slightest clue what we are doing." Why is Genesi not making more 50,000 unit sales and higher instead of meddling in our 5,000 unit sales Amiga community is beyond both my own and Genesi's understanding it seems.

Unless of course the 50,000 units never happened thanks to a botched production schedule and Genesi is desperately looking for any way to quickly recoup their losses before things get really bad again but that would be just FUD on my part.

Or BBRV is as amigan (=fanatic) as we are, and he want Amiga to be successful

@hotrod

They probably had put more money then most of us put their mouths (and still they talk a lot) as far as Amiga goes...

btw, what one may or may not think what an Amiga really is, has no relevance whatsoever, because direct or indirectly they've contributed to it, whatever that it is...

Hi Everyone!

It seems to me like we are completely divorced from amiga inc. There website is all about amiga anywhere pretty much. The Amiga OS 4 community might as well be a seperate company.

I wish someone would buy that dog known as Amiga Inc, so we can move on with what needs to be done. It would be nice if they had some of the programmers in india actually coding something for OS 4.

I only have this to say to Amiga Inc. License some hardware and move aside. We'll take it from there, have a nice day.

Yogi

I've also thought their approaches to this market aren't worth the effort, but not everything in business is evaluated strictly on a cost-benefit basis, it seems, especially in privately held companies that don't have stakeholders watching every move and where the "senior management" can follow their own whims to some extent.

I agree that it doesn't make sense to chase after "5000" (uh, 500 maybe?) sales here when there is potential for thousands elsewhere, but if anything BBRV have a lot of energy and their efforts for other platforms (e.g., video in their latest blog post showing Linux, QNX and MorphOS running on an EFIKA) don't seem to suffer for their time spent here. I suppose people who can't accept that BBRV do "like it" are pressed to come up with other explanations but there doesn't seem to be a cold business rationale for it.

I think the initiative to get Amiga-platform-related people onboard at Power.org was to tap into the energy that this community has, that kind of belies its small numbers. Power.org has the big players but those guys don't seem to be real aware of the grassroots aspects of these platforms. I think maybe BBRV wanted to get some of the positive people around to help stimulate Power.org from the end-user and small developer side (what remains of it here). In a similar way, maybe they want the Amiga connection to tie into the heritage (it's there actually with the hardware and MorphOS, but not nominally) and show the link to the legacy more explicitly.

I don't see any reason to think there's any basis for the speculation in your last paragraph. Certainly in view of AOS4 for Genesi not happening yet in how many years, it's ludicrous to think BBRV (or anyone else) would ever think of AmigaOS4-related sales as a way to "quickly recoup" losses incurred elsewhere (though there is certainly some unmet demand, as polls here have shown). Finally, it seems Genesi has learned not to overcommit to people, so I don't expect to see another disgruntled-contractor web site.

Well, it seems unlikely to me that anything is going to come of their efforts anyway, so people who aren't happy about the connection needn't worry, and can await the other hardware prospects for the platform.

all but one

Why not forget about past faults and give A.Inc another chance? The same for Genesi.

Today we can start a big race:
The racers: Genesi/MOS Team, Amiga.Inc/Hyperion
The goal: Best hardware for a reasonable price until 23 July 2007
The jury: We all!

The winner will take the gratitude of the whole amiga community.

Go, go, go!

@-Sam-

It is my birthday!

But seriously, it is a very good time for the comparison of benefits of both solutions (Genesi, Hyperion): OS4 released, Efika released - let better wins (and I will buy his product).

@xtergo

Make that "wait until sometime AFTER april 2007". They'll still need time to make a profit after release.

In other news, DiscreetFX acquires Hyperion Entertainment Inc. and also hires all it's contractors... Port of OS4 to x86 begins...

Mark my words...

This is old news now of course, but I ran across another blog post on the same rcpmag blog site that wasn't originally mentioned. It had a strangely humorous tone about it. I thought I'd add it to the thread for others to read as we await news about DiscreetFX and the Oil Change Movie.

Additional Amiga/DiscreetFX blog link

@Plaz

Its good to see Doug Barney still writing about Amiga!

I miss his writing from AmigaWorld. Loved that magazine!

@Thread

I don't think DFX is going to buy Amiga. I think its hot air hype.

The only question I have is, are we waiting on hardware or are we waiting on legalities? Ones got to last longer than the other I would think...
