I use Linux on my work desktop every day thank you very much! (I'm a system administrator.)

Linux on x86 makes a very good professional desktop/workstation. There's even Wine (which is very good now!) for when you need a Windows app that's not available for *nix.

For Linux on non-x86 CPUs though, you really learn the value of open source software. Generally, if it's not open source, you don't get to run it. The only thing I really miss on Linux/PPC and Linux/ARM is a decent Flash player.

Oh, on PPC Linux you get Mac-on-Linux too!

EDIT: Forgot to comment about Ubuntu.

Ubuntu's PPC distro is really nice. It's much more polished than Debian's (disclaimer: I'm a massive Debian fan.). I hope it retains the same quality now that it's run by the community.

IMHO they'll change their mind once the PS3 gains market (probably around 2008) which will be considerably bigger than what Apple could ever achieve.

Anyway, even if there is no problem *now*, maintaining a desktop PPC Linux will eventually become a problem *later*. PPC as a desktop CPU (no, I am not talking about crippled consoles) already smells quite rotten.

I agree for the most part with what you say with regards to most Linux distros...EXCEPT for Ubuntu (and yes, I know it's based on Debian). IMHO, Ubuntu is the only desktop Linux effort that I have ever seen that finally convinced me that it COULD be used as a desktop OS and ready for prime time by the avarage home computer user. I know many non-techy people that use this as their primary OS for home use (Internet, e-Mail, Word Processing, etc.) and they are very pleased with it.

With an estimated user base of 7 to 8 million people, Ubuntu has more desktop users today than AmigaOS ever had in its whole history. Does it mean that the amiga never was a Desktop OS ?

The world has changed you know, even elderly people with minimum computer skills now use Linux and I can get a cheap Desktop/laptop linux computer at the local supermarket.

Here's the part that matters:

Next thing you know Debian will also drop the official support. So many Debian mirrors only have the x86 version already. There is no primary mirror in the US or Canada that mirror the PPC distro.

I love LinuxPPC! I don't want to see it die slowly.

AmigaOS was to most people 1.x and the platform floppy-based, so no surprise that the mode of operation was "boot up per application".

Well, there is a "promise" that Gentoo will never drop the PowerPC support.
Genesi has sponsored Gentoo with so many machines so they will never get
any PowerPC shortage in the PowerPC team. :)

This is actually my reason for not supporting Linux! You dont feel connected. Open Source OS`es does as they feel. Same with AROS.

PPC is a competeable cpu and I have lots of trust in it.

all of them uses some sort of PPC technology. There is dual core PPC ready to be supported and more.
