@Futaura

Thanks for the good news but I have to say what is planned seems to be too slow. What about the hope of having IBrowse 3 in one year (or two) ? It could be fester to port other browsers. I am really surprised that these days IBrowse is not fully written in C and able to compile with GCC/vbcc. I would be curious to know which parts must be kept in asm. I understand it can be more efficient but I don't see what "simply isn't possible in C".
I am sure that people can help. Here is what could be done :
- Stefan working on the layout engine
- you working on version 3.0 features and fixing open issues
- another guy converting source code to GCC and removing asm

I dont know if it'll be THAT much faster. It could be, I dont know. But wouldnt you love this original piece of Amiga software to be updated and made more modern? We've got a ton of ports on Amiga that have made life great.. but at the same time, I'm sure a lot of people still want original Amiga software.

@the IBrowse dev team

Got any sort of schedule in mind for IB3.0 that you can share with us?

@Futaura

Thanks for the update. IBrowse has also been my favourite Amiga Browser since I purchased the first version for my A4000 years ago. I still like to run AWeb occasionally and Sputnik (on my Pegasus), but IBrowse continues to be my browser of choice.

Is their a "donate" button on the IBrowse website? I could not find one. I would like to help support the development and I'm sure a lot of other Amigan's would too?

IBrowse is great and I use it every day on my AOne. I just would like to see it improved, I would be proud if we could obtain an up-to-date browser on Amiga, from Amiga. But we need to be realistic and it's time to choose what we want.
Do we want IBrowse 3.0 soon with CSS and native ? If so, we need to organize ourself to reach the goal. Else, we have to say "Ibrowse will evolve slowly and don't expect a new update before one or two years".

It is just a question of project management with roadmap and features issues.

I think a first port of another browser would be faster, but I also know that an engine does not make all the work. It will require GUI, config, optimization, plugin management, ... Ibrowse has all that !

Would it be feasible to use the Mozilla engine from within IBrowse?

Indeed. IBrowse development continues regardless, and admittedly we did have a rather long break after 2.4 was released. There will be no Christmas release again this year - too stressful, from last year's experience.

Well it was certainly very much appreciated here.

Will there be any more 68K development, or is it now only OS4.0?

Many thanks.

@Futaura

Thankyou very much for the update!

But what I've noticed is that what is more required than correct layout is support for IFrames. A lot of pages would work fine if only iframes were supported.

Anyway, IBrowse is my main browser too. I don't want Mozilla or any other godzilla-like browser. I like IBrowse! It's the best if lack of modern features is disregarded.

A quote from the interview at Amigarulez with Stefan:

Quote:
Will IBrowse 2.4 be the last release of IBrowse for OS 3.x/68k, or are you planning to continue the 68k support with new versions?

Well, we won't break 68k compatibility if it isn't needed. But as OS4 evolves, certain parts of IBrowse may end up requiring OS4 to function to its full extent.

My favourite multi-platform browser is Opera, but when I am in Amiga territory that changes to iBrowse. Add me to your list of people that like real Amiga programs.

Roy Leith

PS I don't know why iBrowse is a true Amiga program. It just seems more at home in the Amiga OS than stuff ported from other platforms.

IB is where fast, compared to OWB for example, also OWB does not have a proper user interface, pull down menus and toolbar, if this 3 things where fixed then think your option might change.

What I'm basicly saying that is Linux programs converted/ported often have some drawbacks because they are not fully ported, for example UAE does have GUI in LINUX, but does not have a GUI on OS4.

Probably because IB is small, responsive, fast and does not cater to microsofts borked "export as html" code.

Many years ago soon after ME was released I was at an amiga club meeting and someone bought their new 1ghz pc along so we decided to compare it against my A4000/060/50.. A few websites were chosen, some takes set for the websites like browse to here, download that picture etc.. The pc did display the pages faster but my 4000 won because I used IBrowse... shift-click to download is far faster than right click, save file as, confirm. I beat the pc by 28 seconds :)
