So, who's going to be the first to post videos/photos/info from AIConf. I'm most interested in OS4.1 and what ACube has planned, but any info would be appreciated.

Hans

@Hans

It seems that every A1 user is impatient to learn some more info about ACube and OS 4.1.

As Kicko wrote, I am hurry to have OS 4.1 to use my A1 more often (if this is still possible ).

My credit card is about to burn my hands.
YES, I am impatient TOO !

There are also others there that says other things about OS4, so I'd take that with a pinch of salt

That's what i was going to ask. Videos and pictures would be nice, although i must say that i would like more to see videos instead of pictures.

And sorry, why would my word be influenced by the fact that there are other users in that IRC channel? If I ever did lie in one show report or similar, then OK, but if what I wrote was always factual, as I think it was, I think you can trust my words.
And yes, I publicly confirm that the price that was mentioned is 125 Euro, VAT included, for a boxed release, 1 CD and a printed manual. ACube representatives asked each other if the price was set in stone, and it seems it is pretty definitive.

Kind regards,
Andrea

@TheDaddy

Yes, we know

ACube comunicated prices for the upcoming OS4.1 and for our own products as well.

The suggested retail price for OS4.1 is Euro 105 + local VAT / taxes.

The package is similar to the OS4 Classic one and will include:

- cardboard box
- CD with a serial number
- printed install instruction manual

Amiga also revoked the license from Hyperion a few month ago, and they still develop the OS further.

Ok, time for a short report. I don't know if you will see many others doing so, since the attendance was very low, but expected, as the event was organized in an hurry It was, however, some kind of year 0 edition, and a first serious edition is already scheduled for December 2008. That one should be more widely advertised.

The highlight was AmigaOS 4.1, whose release was announced just the night before. The main new features are already known since they are listed in the upgrade announcement. Basically there's a new memory paging system, that works in a dynamic and intelligent way, allocating swap space on disk only when you run out of physical memory. During the demonstration, Stefano 'Lecta' Guidetti, AmigaOS betatester, copied a 750+ MB file in RAM, having "only" 512MB on board, and then opened a PDF without any visible slowdown. Clearly the content of Ram Disk was copied back to disk. Then there is the new composition engine, that allows true transparency, rounded window corners, faster scrolling and a couple of commodities, one that smoothly zooms on the desktop, and the other showing a live animated real time miniature of the screen. The Cairo 2D graphic library has been ported, the PTP protocol has been implemented (to support some cameras that are not seen as mass storage, like most Canons for instance). DOS has been extended to full 64 bit support, and a new and faster filesystem, JXFS, supporting partition sizes of Terabytes, has happeared. Workbench finally has an half decent lister mode. Other than this, there are mainly bugfixes and improvement on stability under the surface.
All day long it was possible to test freely a couple of machines running AmigaOS 4.1, and also try DvPlayer, OWB (when an EEEPC was configured as gateway for the internet connection) among the others.
Price for this version, that will be distributed in a boxed form, consisting of a CD and an installation manual, is 125 Euro including VAT (so, about 105 Euro + local taxes). No support for Classic is forecasted: this is a final cut, said ACube. Supporting only new gen machines enables focusing on new features. Classic users will very likely receive some updates to their 4.0, mostly consisting in bugfixes.
ACube also presented some HW: the well known MiniMig at 149 Euro + VAT, Sam440Ep and the new Sam440 Flex. The Flex version lacks the onboard Radeon M9 chip, that was pretty expensive according to ACube, but has 3 PCI slots. The form factor is FlexATX, 17x19cm. The price is not yet set on stone, but will be in the 300-350 Euro range exclufing taxes, the target being 300 + VAT.
To all the interested: no news about AmigaOS 4 running on Sam440, let alone a possible release in the future. Still on hold due to the court case. The board was shown running Linux, there will be a liveCD that can be installed on HD soonish.

I was there with MorphOS 2.0 running on both a Pegasos 2 G4 and an Efika. I tried to show the few curious the new features (including Layers3D, the MorphOS equivalent to the compositing engine, running surprisingly fast on an Efika), including, but not limited to, new Ambient, MUI4, new tools (HDConfig, MUIShell, RemoteShell), uodated ones (Defrag, SFSDoctor, Snoopium now included), utilities, including a default editor, the new Multiview, the new preference system (including new Poseidon, TCP/IP stack, screenbalnkers), the included applications - Sputnik, Sketch (a nice 2D drawing program), ShowGirls 1.0, Apdf...
To those interested I showed native, 68k, WarpUp apps, DVD and hires trailers played with Mplayer with Altivec support, games, Blender... Also, I ran some quite demanding programs like Pixel and games like WipeOut 2097 or Quake in 800x600 on the Efika desktop. And made a presentation using the projector, but I do suck at presentations.

Other than that, there was Haiku, the open source reimplementation of BeOS/Zeta on show. A short speech gave us an overlook on the status of the development, on the sponsorships coming from the Google summer of code and the help from some university graduation thesis, and listed the past and next future milestones.

That's basically it.
Enjoy some photos I uploaded on AmigaPage (and I shall say a big thank you to Mak73 for that site and for its Gallery feature - and he wrote it by himself in PHP not using any standard CMS):

Regardless of the numbers in attendance, thanks to you and Acube for both attending and putting the effort into the demos.
And thanks again for the report! Kudos, as usual...

@guruman

Thanks for the info...

Sounds encorouging...

Did you actually ask ACube about OS4 + Sam440 but they can't respond?

I suppose that is fair enough if they can't...

Alex.

What if OS 4.1 is sold for AmigaOne and it just happens to also work on other hardware? Windows PC sellers purchase or develop BIOS etc. to run Windows on their systems. What prevents someone from developing software like a BIOS that will support OS4? Back in the days of Windows 3.1 we had emulators that let us run Windows on an Amiga. How would an OS4 capable hardware emulator be different than UAE or a Windows emulator?

Are Amiga Inc's pockets deep enough to fight every possible way of getting around their claimed right to OS4?
