Sorry about these possibly silly questions but could anyone with OS4.X please tell me if OS4.X:

1) can use SATA DVD-RW drives, any type (laptop ones, desktop ones), does it come with inbuilt burning software?

2) recognises USB devices such as internal 3.5" card readers, internal USB 3.5" FDD

3) recognises USB ports (connected to USB headers on SAM for example)

4) can use SATA HDs (both 2.5 and 3.5 inches)

The system does support writing to DVD+/-RW and MRW (packet writing formats), but the resulting disks can only be used under AmigaOS 4. It also supports DVD-RAM, I think those are readable anywhere, but I'm not sure.

As for DVD+/-R, and "burning" discs (whether the media is R or RW), you will need third-party software. AmiDVD is free and works well. FryingPan is excellent too and cheap, although not totally free.

On Sam & AOS4.1 and with my card reader, it does NOT work. The card reader works with AOS3.9 and Poseidon, not with SAM. My MemoryStickPro (1GB and 8GB) is not recognized (with simple FAT filesystem).

Anyway, USB is quite problematic on Sam440ep's AOS4.1 (beta):
1) not all usb-mouse/keyboards works
2) system does not boot with usb-devices connected to certain ports on Sam.
3) USB-Stack crashes here and there or just "loses" the device (especially during high system load) and cannot be re-initialized without a reboot
4) copying data from USB-Mass-Storage devices (like USB-HD, USB-CD, usbsticks, etc.) causes eating up all your main memory (regardless of which filsystem is used, e.g. ISO9660, SFS, ext2filesystem) and which will never be freed again, such that only a reboot gives you back your main memory.

(I made tests on all 4 USB-Ports of Sam440ep)

Don't know if this is due to AOS4.1 or Sam440ep or a combination of both, but USB is simply the worst thing in Sam&AOS4.1

Don't know if that helps, but on all my setups USB works without any major issues with the devices I have. What I usually do is remove bootkeyboard.usbfd and bootmouse.usbfd from the kicklayout (and remove the matching files from usb:fdclasses ) and add hid.usbfd directly to kicklayout.

I also have several card readers and usb sticks here that all work.

This question already I put here 2 weeks ago and nobody answered me, because I asked and now again ask which hardware via USB we can connect? for example external USb Floppy Disk, USB 2.0 cases with hard drives, HUB ports, which Pendrives? because now only I can connect one USB card reader with cards SD of 256 MB, 1GB and 4 GB, fortunately, but I want know more.

You could always start a new thread listing what works and maybe what doesn't?
Ask everyone what devices are working including model number and manufacturer.

BTW shouldn't your tag show Sam speed as 533mhz?

ok, I'll try that, but the main question here is: "Why" or "What's the difference"

As a first thing, I can already say, that my Logitech Cordless Desktop Keyboard still works this way, and the Logitech Cordless Desktop mouse still doesn't work.

I only have Sony MemoryStickPro cards, no other cards I can test with my card reader. Normal usbsticks which are directly connected to a USB port (i.e. not a memory card via a card reader) works here as well.

AmigaOS 4.1 supports the USB mass-storage class, so anything using that should work. That covers USB cases with hard drives & pendrives. USB 2.0 should also work (by falling back to USB 1.1). USB hubs should work too, but they are more likely to have problems, especially before Workbench loads. I don't know what sizes are supported, but presumably any size should be OK.

I just tried plugging in my USB floppy drive (which is also a standard USB class), and OS4 seemed to recognise it - although I have no floppy disks to test it with (any more than I have cassette tapes, magnetic reels, or other obsolete ancient media). So I guess that most/all USB floppy drives will work.

USB connector J17 does not work with OS4.1 at present (they need to add OHCI aka USB2 support first). But the other two (combined) internal connectors work fine, as do the external ones.

I think that most USB devices work, as long as they adhere to a supported USB class, but USB is such a complex standard, and manufacturers tend to be poor at sticking exactly to standards, so there are bound to be a few USB devices which do not work correctly.

Hopefully the USB storage class memory leak & non-booting problem with some keyboard/mice will be fixed when OS4.1 is no-longer beta.

If you plan to use an external HD at some point it may be worth considering a front bay with E-SATA, you won't have to wait for USB 2.0 support and it will be faster anyway.

Most external USB harddrive cases come with E-SATA these days, so it is a very good idea to support it - and very easy (just plug an E-SATA socket to one of Sam440's spare SATA connectors - which I have already done in my Sam's case).

Not my plan, already I have several USB hard drives cases with that I use for backups of files from my PC for example, my Hollywood proyects, and I want copy these files to my Sam.

The Floppy USB disk, well, I bough one unit of this to use with my Efika and my PC, now only I use it with PC, OK the Amiga floppy disk doesn't work in it, but I can carry text files in floppy from PC to my Sam, for example for Cinnamon Writer, not all is to have pendrives.

I have similar problems with OS 4.x USB on my µA1 too. My Kensington cordless mouse isn't recognized after a boot or reboot with the default USB setup. If I plug it in after booting it is recognized. If I follow Rogue's advice, the mouse is recognized at boot but won't work in the Amiga Preboot Screen (the screen that appears if you hold down the ScrollLock key during a reboot). USB problems are not necessarily "SAM" failures. On my µA1 system, some USB memory sticks work fairly well while others constantly fail. I recently got so ticked off at a Kingston stick that I threw it on the floor and jumped up and down on it. It didn't solve any USB problems but it make me feel better
