I think I've installed it correctly

bunzip2 -f linux-2.6.18.tar.bz2

I'm not sure, if that does the right thing (at least the manpage for bunzip2 doesn't say that it also decompresses the tar archive).

I did it this way:
cd /
tar -xjvf linux-2.6.18.tar.bz2

Please note that the name of the kernel image may have changed!

I tried that first (I think I actually used

-xvzf
) but I got an error message. Something about it not being a gzipped file.

@RacerX

Thats's because it bzipped

You need the option -xjf

x = extract
j = filter through bzip first
f = file

the z in your variant means filetr through gzip hence the error message

try going to the gnome-control-panel and selecting the sound tab / icon (can also find it via the system / preferences menu).

There are various types of sound usage lsited and you can click on the popups to slect which card to use, or leave it on autselect. I don't have the chip so I don't know what name the onboard sound will show as, but this approach enables me to switch between my terratec phase 22 and my sb128 under linux. I think the gstreamer-properties prgram I mentioned above also allows you to select different audio sources / sinks.

I normally use KDE. Is there a KDE equivalant?

I thought there was something that was accessed via the shell.

Command line wise you might be thinking of alsaconf. That should enable you to force alsa to choose the onboard sound over a pci slot addition. If you only have onboard sound alsa should find it anyway. Running alsaconf does no harm though.

KMix is what I used to us under KDE to change sound settings. I don't have it installed at the moment, and apt-get wanted to download 169Megs of other jusnk just to resinstall it so I couldn't test if that allows you to select the card or just adjusted the allready selected one.

Sometimes I have problems with my sound cards not initialising properly at boot (usually the Terratec Phase 22) so I run "alsa force-reload". try this if nothing appears the next time you boot after running alsaconf.

both the alsa commands I metioned need to be run as root (or at least 'su')

Still no joy. "alsaconf" doesn't seem to be a command. "alsa force-reload" shows it unloading and re-loading the drivers (and I get a couple of clicks from the speakers) but nothing else seems to happen.

If I open the Kmix window, by "Current mixer:" is a blank box. It has an arrow on the box like you could click on it and select a mixer but clicking on it does nothing. The KMix window has no sliders.

I went into Kpackage and installed several mixer type things but nothing seemed to help.

I've made a little progress. I used to get a window when Debian booted saying the sound couldn't be initiallized (something about /dev/dsp?). I don't get that anymore.

BTW: The on-board sound works fine on OS4.

Do you have installed the alsa-base and alsa-utils packages?

I put the new patch file on amigaone-linux.sourceforge.net. The file that implements the quirks is arch/ppc/platforms/amigaone_quirks.c after you patched the linux kernel source code. This is just a intermediate solution, as I have to find a cleaner way to fixup the PCI resources for the official kernel tree.

BTW: Did you try out the official kernel source from www.kernel.org with AmigaOne support?

I was working in the amigaone_pci.c and amigaone_pcibios_after_init() areas. Couldn't get the read/write through the baseaddress vector to work correctly. I did find where it was stopping, though. As you probably know, the original kernel code was not able to correctly set up the Sigmatel chip. Again, good on you! (I was trying to beat you to it, but didn't get there...)

I have not tried the official kernel source with A1 support. In fact, I can't try anything right now as my A1 has inexplicitly quit on me. (Won't boot, no video, verified good video card though, fans whir, disks go around, but no boot.) Aargh. Have to get that fixed first.

Yes, both were already installed.

alsaconf DOES work now (I guess I had to restart the computer). It recognized the on-board sound and seemed to work fine, but still no sound. I shut the computer down and restarted it and still nothing. NO sliders or mixer shown in Kmix, and no sound from XMMS or the control panel sound settings.

In the Kcontrol panel, should the audio device be set to 'auto' or 'alsa' or what?

I usually set it to alsa.

At one point I manually edited one of the alsa config files in /etc but i cant remember which one... which is unhelpful, I know.

@broadblues

This is the output I get in the shell when I run alsaconf

Loading driver...
Setting default volumes...
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.
/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1497: No soundcards found...

===============================================================================

Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.

Have a lot of fun!

Does that tell us anything? I'm running Debian Lenny

I also get this message as I shut down Linux and get ready to switch off the computer

Shutting down ALSA ... warning 'alsactl store' failed with error message
'alsactl: save_state:1497: no sound cards found...' ...failed

Thanks for the tips. I was using a friends web cam and don't have one myself.

Nice Youtube footage. Good to learn more about members here. Guitarist and web designer. Now the avatar makes sense!

Did you take a look at the motherboard or does it work under OS4? I still have one of these SigmaTel codec chips. I can send you one, if you want.

Thanks. Is it worth using in place of of a SoundBlaster?

I'm surew I checked the lot once, but I am going by OD4 debug output:
[VIA-AC97] Debug: AC-Link reset, primary codec not ready!
[VIA-AC97] Error: sorry, you don't seem to have the AC'97 codec!
Unable to initialize Card subsystem.

Did you check, if the webcam is already supported by Linux v2.6.18?

No, I just plugged it in to see what would heppen.

Well, Linux should load the kernel drivers, but AFAIK you still have to manually setup the printer in CUPS. GNOME should be your friend here.

I have some stuff missing. "SPM" had GNOME printer stuff not installed, but couldn't download with my sources. I tweaked it recently so will try and install again.

Seems I lost things when upgrading from Etch to Lenny.

Hmm, are you sure, you're using the new kernel image!? Note that it is named uImage-2.6.18 and not kernel-2.6.18.img anymore!

Sorry, no I wasn't, I was still testing the old kernel! Will install and also check how USB is. That previous good high speed USB report gives me hope.

Um, I just checked my downloads and I can't find an updated Linux kernel! I've got the modules but the uImage I see is for 2.6.10 and even says so in the file. And the build date is from last year according to mkimage.

I don't know how to up my kernel!

No soundcards found is a worrying line to read...

What is the contents of /var/lib/asla/asound.state ?

What do you get if you do a "cat /proc/asound/cards" ?

Does the output of the above change after doing the aslaconf routine?

Here's the content of my asound.state file , I don't have the onboard sound, but the format of the file should be similar, just with extra entry for the VIA chip.

@Hypex

I only got a webcan recently myself. Fun to play arround with but fiddly to get something good to record. Need to get some money and buy a proper video camera....

Thanks for the nice comment about the youtube link (Oh and thanks to Geri for the same ...)

No soundcards found is a worrying line to read...

What is the contents of /var/lib/asla/asound.state ?

What do you get if you do a "cat /proc/asound/cards" ?

Does the output of the above change after doing the aslaconf routine?

The directory /var/lib/alsa is empty

cat /proc/asound/cards results in

--- no soundcards ---

After running alsaconf the results are the same.

@RacerX

That's very odd if the drivers are supposed to be working. I presume that alsaconf listed the onboard VIA ? And that you seleted it? It lists on mine even though I don't have the chip though so that may not mean anything. Also odd as you mention the speakers click which normally means the sound card has been initialsed.

I'm out of ideas, have to hope Geri can think of something.
