Er? Cool, but 'everything' is locked up.

This even happens on my linux box every now and then. If I could just logout instead
of switch off............if you know what I mean.

Oh I see what you mean, you want a button on the case that can trigger a warm rest if the OS is locked up? That's 'impossible', if the OS is locked up it's got no way of knowing you pressed it. And if it's that badly damaged it's likely too corrupt to restart. Even if you found away to do it you'd likely end up pressing the cold rest soon after....

@SinanG

If there's a shutdown in uboot then I'd guess an equivalent software power off would be possible at OS level. A simple OS level power off command be very useful for remote usage. As would remote power on via a router or similar.

@KimmoK Why you want to loose the best Amiga feature? I like to push the switch button and go elsewhere without care what was opened. I'm even bored by the MOS shut down option ! I don't want my Amiga works like a MS$ clone. With the current Amiga boot time it is absolutely unusefull

Dunno which system you use, but my A1XE is no faster at booting than my Win 7 pc since update 3, I think we have lost "fast booting" as a feature, at least for now. It would be nice to be restored to pre update 3 boot times though.

Ah, so this feature that you don't want actually exists. Btw, nearly all hardware that support OS4 support software control of the PSU. As in AmigaOne, Sam, X1000 and Pegs all support it.

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

"button on the case that can trigger a warm rest if the OS is locked up? That's 'impossible', if the OS is locked up it's got no way of knowing you pressed it."

I'm not sure if SAM FPGA is able to generate interrupt, but it should be possible to connect "soft-reset-attempt" -button to xena/xorro, to try to trigger interrupt process on the PPC to do the warm reboot. But yes, it would be kludge and perhaps futile attempt, because of corrupted data in RAM etc.

Previously I have made an sw shutdown (e.g. a simple CI command) enhancement request for future OS4 releases in the official OS4 Beta list.

We will see if it will be accepted by the devs or not.

@KimmoK

The only real "safe" restart is to trigger a full system-wide reset of every chip on the board,
and programming the FPGA? forget it... why add such a complexity?

there is already "Soft-off" in some of the boards already...
and what is the goal of this thread?

we are starting to splinter off into a myriad different directions...

The goal was specifically adding the "option" of a software controlled shutdown right?
anything else is just gravy on top of that...

Either the system will power off with some kind of *optional* notification mechanism,
or it will simply have the plug pulled (hardware off switch)

Ive had systems where both were options and I know of several mixed system users
that would switch away to AmigaOS if it showed itself to be easier and better to use
for the tasks required (so far the only limiting factor is literally access to machines)

I'm going to stick with building my new machine slowly... and possibly look at adding
a small tool to perform this software started "power off" option.

I won't care for anything more fancy than that since the reboot command appears to do
at least the basics... (too bad there is no "STAYDEAD" or "WAKEUP timedelay" options :)

is anything more than that actually needed?

I stated that I did want software power off, just not the software shutdown procedure.

I seem to remeber it being stated somewhere that the AOne doesn't support software control of the CPU. but if that's wrong then great. It's still not accessable at the OS level at the moment though.

C:Poweroff (and maybe exec equiavalent library call) with a perhaps SYNC option similar to C:reboot would be very useful, those that want a full shutdown all my apps automatically feature could then implement thier prefered soloution, whether via script or commodity.

Nope!

I think everybody would agree that software shutdown/power off would be
a nice 'option'.
