Q for Trevor (and other HW types)
It has been said in the FAQ that "...about a quarter of the 64 I/O lines are connected to the CPU..." Does this imply only a 16 bit data bus? Surely not. Is it possible to transfer data and/or microprogram to/from the XMOS chip via DMA from the CPU?

| OK, so it was asked before.. but I need to ask again.
What types of video connector(s) will be on the stock A1X1000? SVGA? DVI? HDMI??
I am _really_ hoping for a digital video out of some sort.
Perhaps someone saw the back panel at the recent demonstration??

I'm pretty sure the data between xena and CPU is transferred via high speed serial interface. (serial is not always slow, see 10Gbit ethernet of the PA6T as an example)
other than that.... 64/4=16 But I think I only see 7 lines between CPU-xena. About 8 lines seem to be connected to SB600 and/or Xilinx FPGA.
And it has been said that xcore JTAG lines are connected to (CPU?) GPIO lines.
It should be easy for a-eon to release more information. (btw. I think I'm pretty good @ powerpoints, perhaps I should apply to A-Eon PR position ... my current job ends around september anyways) Last edited by KimmoK on 30-Jun-2010 at 07:13 AM. Judging by the video posted by AmigaProductions, the cards in use at the VCF weekend, were not the final cards. A PCI NIC and generic ATi card were in use, while the board has onboard NIC and will most likely come with PCI-e R700 series card.
The mainboard in the demo machine had no Xena/XMOS chip, while the clear cased display unit has the XMOS chip. I'm not sure if these are revision 1 and revision 2 respectively, but I wouldn't base ANY assumptions on the final product based on the demo build.
It looks like only time will tell. |

Okay mate I have some questions I haven't seen asked yet.
a.) Will the board be running UBoot? If so will it be updated to have a better CLI, better CD booting and support things like device trees? Else what firmware?
b.) Will the board and firmware be able to boot a standrad Linux CD without modifications. I.e. If I stuck Ubuntu 10.04 Deskstop PPC in the drive could it start booting and present me with the latest Ubuntu desktop a few minutes later?
c.) Will the firmware present a splash screen to the user on power on giving a nice presentation? Can firmware output be hidden behind said splash screen if possible and only show up in case it needed too?
Think that's enough for now. |

I agree with c so much! While it would be nice to have a and b, I really dislike the POST output on PCs, and UBoot immediately reminds me of that, even if it is different information being shown. It's one of the things Apple do nicely - not having a blinking cursor, flickering screen or nonsensical (to the average Joe) scrolling text makes the whole experience feel more professional and polished. When I see these things on a PC I always think it looks like it's amateurish, maybe trying too hard to look expensive and complicated... Or maybe I'm weird _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

| I see lots of questions and suggestions but very few answers. I'll add my question anyway. Will we finally get full USB 2.0 speed and functionality on the X1000? I'm getting tired of seeing specs that indicate USB 2.0 capability on OS4 boards but no actual USB 2 functionality. I really don't want to buy a new Amiga and still have to take a nap while I backup my system to a USB storage device. _________________ X1000 with 2GB memory & OS4.1FE |

The X1000 will have the Common Firmware Environment. Quote:

As the CFE is more or less aimed at the embedded market (which mostly run 'headless'), I don't see that it would. If it was used in a set top box however there may be justification for it, so it's possible. I haven't seen any evidence when googling to confirm a splash screen. The Linux MIPS wiki page has a page about the CFE and it specifically mentions the PA Semi Electra board (PA6T-1682M) evaluation board using the CFE.
Apparently one of the features of the CFE is an external API for 'applications'. Perhaps a custom 'app' could be written to show a default bitmap on boot, and the firmware could enable or disable the running of that 'application'. I'm just speculating though, I have no informed idea.

Official answers are given in the A-Eon FAQs section of the Developer Projects Forum. A-Eon is aware of this thread.
I originally started this thread when the teaser campaign was in progress. A lot of the questions have been answered, a lot still remain to be answered. |

1) I recently wrote to Trevor to suggest a possible video card for the A1X1000. He said he'd forward my recommendation to the design/development team. (This indicates to me that they are still undecided and shopping around for the best deal they can get.)
2) I don't think I have ever seen a PCI-E video card with an R700 chipset that has only SVGA connectors. I've seen some with SVGA and DVI, some with 2 DVIs, and some with SVGA, DVI and HDMI._________________ Amiga user since 1985. |

Thanks to all for the replies... I have been very busy and have not had much time to play with the Amiga, but I have not disappeared, and I WILL be the first in line for the new A1X1000. I'll be getting a new monitor as well, and was just wondering what my options might be.
I guess I'll just have to wait until it arrives and drive down to Fry's that day. (who knew there were Fry's in Georgia??)
Keeping the Amiga Dream alive. Now we need a "Buy a Beer" button for Trevor and each of the Friedens..
Keep Smiling, Lyle

Tomazkid has been managing this, but he has been incredibly busy outside of the site and hasn't had much opportunity to work on these things. I expect once he has more free time some updates will be forthcoming. _________________ Test sig (new) |

| It seems freeRTOS is now available for xcore.
It would be interesting to hear if xena has RTOS running on it (on one of it's cores) when x1000 ships...
From recent ART recording it seems Trevor is hoping for some initial xena/xcore demo application to ship with x1000. _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |
