A port to ARM would open the doorway to cheap Netbooks. The question is... How cheap could Hyperion licence Os4 > Netbook Remix to vendors for ?

| @BigD "The A600 should have been switched to a laptop project in my view!"
Who says it hasn't? http://www.amigathering.gr/images/ag10/ag10_35.jpg
That's an A600 with a Viper 630, subway, 12.1 TFT, touchpad, pckeyboard, Ethernet. And it's last year's project!! Plenty of more pics where that came from, http://www.amigathering.gr/ag10.html
Anyway, no matter what we say here, the price would never be realistic for a portable PPC Amiga. And as another member has mentioned with "certain certainty" LOL, by the year's end we'll be having one! You know what? it's already out, it's called PowerBook, and it will be running MOS... Sorry, couldn't hold it. |

Do I want a lapotop? Yes.
Do I want Sam-like specs? No. I want a performance laptop. I await news of X1000 CPU details to decide if that's right or wrong for my laptop. I'd have loved the PA6T. Have been pondering 8610 more recently. 8641D, IBM's G5, Cell were all too hungry for electrons, would be too hot or too short battery life. 8640D may be suitable as well. _________________ All glory to the Hypnotoad! |

I like your positive thinking, but I'll have to see it to believe it. Oh, so many years waiting for an Amiga laptop, sigh._________________ Moxee AmigaOne X1000 AmigaOne XE G4 I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. |

Good things come to those who wait...
Well, I have written enough times on some of the X1000 threads here, that a laptop would really be the way to go for A-Eon, so I will spare you off telling you again..
So, yeah, I'd love to sit in a cafe, drinking some mokka and surfing the net with my fancy Amiga-Notebook. :)
I think, after the release and initial sales of the X1000, this should be the next (even bigger) project for A-Eon...
Go for It!!! :) |

| I would be happy with a LimeBook if OS4.x was available for it, i can't justify the price of an expensive desktop system but i use a laptop for internet duties and like them to be as small as possible so CPU power isn't an issue although i would like at least a 8.9 inch screen. AmigaOS would be perfectly capable of fulfilling what i require from my current Netbook (acer aspire one).
I think if the limebook was to be sold with OS4 installed (with working wireless networking) for anything up to about US$450 (they were supposed to cost $199 with linux) quite a few would be willing to pay for it as a small laptop makes a much better part time "hobby" computer for me and i expect quite a few others than a full size desktop. Most already have a desktop PC or Mac that does everything they need and cannot justify the cost or space requirements of another that may not be used for a whole lot and really would be just a hobby.
I haven't voted because neither of the options are relevant to me.

Price : of course it would more expensive, let's say something like 800-900 euros. |
Why not use powerbooks/ibooks? these are cheap, easy to find and have fast G4 cpus (way faster than any Sam440)_________________ The only spanish amiga news web page/club: CUAZ |

That's a little unfair. There tons of netbooks for well under 400 euros. Even check out the new HP netbook with NVidia ION chipset. Seeing a little tiny netbook hooked to a 20" external monitor playing Call of Duty 4, well it's pretty impresive. And yes, it's less the 400 euros.

How many times will we have to explain that when you build 1 million unit of a hardware (like the one you mention) of course you can have low prices. We are talking about hardware for the microscopic Amiga market here. Never ever forget it.Last edited by elwood on 07-Jan-2010 at 09:07 PM.

I would love to have a Amy notebook but i have already a MacBook Pro with SSD
Anyway i think Sam specs for an Amy laptop are perfect imho. I really don't get the point in our "amiga world" to have a highend notebook. Sam is a great machine, having a Sam lilke notebook will be great: complete and power efficient. I think a small 13" would be perfect. Wifi is a must, modem is not imho (and quite impossible in amiga land).
I really want the updateeeee............ make my SAM happy!! _________________ ikir |

Notebooks are far harder to built than a desktop-mobo as their are no predifined standards for cases, batteries and such. |
It still puzzles me why there is no 'standard' laptop-case to house, say, an off the shelf mini-itx board. It should open heaps of possibilities I think._________________ Back home... |

Maybe because most mini-itx boards are unsuitable for a laptop ?
In a laptop, everythink must be tuned to each other, components need to be low power and shock-resistant. And than they are densly packed to each other and still have to be cooled sufficient.
Read, what might be the perfect laptop-case for an Atom ain't gonna work for a Core2 and surely won't fit anything from AMD.
Look at your DIY PC, even if it's a mini-itx, half of the case is still filled with air this gives the designers of the mobos to place components as they seem fit, use coolers in various shapes built in a DVD and HD or just a SSD .....
There are DIY-laptops, ranging from Atari-XL to Efika, from A600 to XBox, but these never reach the pro-look of a Dell or Apple (mind you the XL actually comes quite close). _________________ - We don't need good ideas, we haven't run out on bad ones yet - blame Canada |

Mini-ITX is potentially clunky for a modern and sleek laptop design. Heatsinks and rear-panel connectors would make for a thick laptop, which goes against current trend. Some connectivity things could also tend toward clunky cabling, assuming you want the rear panel to be available at the rear of the case. I spent a good bit of time thinking through a Mini-ITX standard laptop case a couple years ago, and I ended up dropping the idea. And I was obsessed with how to make a MicroA1 into a laptop, since there's nothing else to satisfy Amiga laptop wishers like us.
What I am suprised about is the lack of a standard laptop shell format, call it LTX if you like. Some point to VIA's open laptop thing, but I didn't understand it to be what I'd like in an open laptop format, and I remember it being a bit too small for me. Sure, small is sleek and trendy, but I'd still like a screen big enough to read and a keyboard big enough for my fingers. I'd love a laptop standard format in a 15" category.
But I'd also like things to be modular, my own idea is for a computer module that would plug into a laptop motherboard, a concept which isn't conveniently compatible with trendy slim casing, but hopefully more so than a Mini-ITX casing._________________ All glory to the Hypnotoad! |
