Edit: Title was "Alternative PPC hardware (even on an x86 PCI slot)" then I think I found some interesting things.

http://varisys.co.uk/processor%20boards.html

This website contains
1) several PPC mobos, with one that is remarkably similar in specs to the X1000 (VM31 - PA Semi (PA6T-1682M) XMC module. I'd say the processor for the X1000 is pretty much cracked. It's got to be PA6T.
Edit: From the website news March 18th, 2009:
Quote:
After two and half years of working together Varisys and XMOS have complete their 16th development/evaluation board.

So Varisys are the people behind the X1000!!!

2) rather decent 1.3Ghz G4 PowerPC PCI cards for x86 that would give a SAM a run.

Granted, I have no idea what it costs, but I would think the PCI cards on x86 would be a far cheaper alternative than any we've been presented.

Maybe even putting the PPC card in your X1000 or even SAM is an option if they can get it working with SMP. Add PPC cards and get a more powerful Amiga. That would shut a lot of people up.

@BigBentheAussie

Well, get the OS4 license from Hyperion and start porting! Otherwise I'm not interested...

If Varisys is the supplier/designer of the mobo, which looks very likely......how can it not be.
Then the implications are that the X1000 may have been in development for over 2 years!!!

Hosted on the XLinkers site I came across some slides from the Varisys XMOS conference presentation. Looking forward to the video.
http://www.xmoslinkers.org/files/xlinkers_conference_2009_open_audio_card_paul_gentle.pdf
(renders really slowly here for some reason)

If a partnership exists between A-eon and Varisys, it might help to tell you that Varisys are after the following markets:

Key Markets:
Video and image processing
Telecommunications
Military and aerospace
Radar and Sonar
Speech recognition
Industrial Control
Vetronics

So, are these potential uses for an X1000?
Haven't we heard that Hyperion have done some contracting for the military or aerospace? Could this be the interesting story behind the MAP.

Surfing around, it seems they have provided this PPC hardware (sans XMOS) since 2007 to the military.
So is X1000 mil-spec? If so they would make Doommaster proud!

The first PWRficient™ device
– the PA6T-1682M
– combines a pair of 2GHz 64-bit Power Architecture™ cores
- with AltiVec™ compatible VMX instructions
- 2MB of on-chip L2 cache (whooppiduudiidaa!!!!)
- dual DDR2-1067 memory controllers (INSANE!!!)
- and 24 high speed SerDes serial I/Os capable of supporting PCI Express, SGMII and XAUI.

x300 proto http://varisys.co.uk/vcp6.html

And from the PDF ... They would be capable to develop xena for SAM overnight.

That would be a nice new HW partner, yes.

@BigBentheAussie

If x1000 has that 2Ghz dualcore chip, it might be the fastest PPC computer that has ever been produced. Let's hope....

@BigBentheAussie

I sincerely think you should change the title of the thread back or moderate the claim. Unless you have confirmation, it's mere speculation and just adds to the gossip. And we already have plenty of that.

Besides, the PCB is green not red.

Hyperion Entertainment licenses 3D technology to Smiths Aerospace

Later a huge argument arose in a thread (*gasp* *shocking*) about how consequential a story this was.

Who says that the dual 2.3GHz Mac is faster then the CPU on the X1000 ??

The G5 is way older then the X1000 CPU and who knows what speeds that CPU will run.

A 1.8 or 2.0 Ghz X1000 could well outperform an older G5 at 2.3 Ghz for all we know.

Lets wait and see.

@Metalheart

I seriously doubt X1000 cpu is any faster than a G5 mac,but the X1000 might have faster access to ram,so it's possible the overall speed is up there with the G5. Better process technology,might also count as a factor.

@Caveman

Why do you doubt that ?

It could very well be possible. Given the G5's age, and the fact that we dont know anything about the CPU yet.

Well we'll see

Dual processor, dual core. That 4 cores. At 2.7.

I have a hunch. Want to bet $10? Raw benchmark numbers. (I just need to find someone with Quad G5)

@opi

On Wiki I found that the fastest Mac had a ONE dual core G5 at 2.3 Ghz.

Anyway THAT was the Mac I was comparing it to.

Was there a faster one ?

Also this was hunch from me to

Anyway I dont care I'll settle for a lot less

@Metalheart

Counting in all factors,it might be as fast,but we don't know yet I hope we can see some benchmarks soon It would be quite interresting is there anyone here that know what the latest process G5 used(90nm or less) ?

Thank you

Also do you all remember that an Amiga was faster then a mac with the same CPU ? In 68k days...
