I like your avatar. Did you take it from the old record label of German Democratic Republic? I have some old "Amiga" records at home as well... _________________ Ciao

Yes, that is from Amiga Records.
Have a LP with Andreas Vollenweider myself, bought in DDR actually, and published by Amiga Records.
Fun to have visited a country that does not exist, these days. _________________ Site admins are people too..pooff! |

| If the domain name cannot be bought by Hyperion, it better stay down. It was doing more damage than helping to spread amiga OS and NGs ppc amiga.

| @Dandy and Tomazkid: Yes, it is the label from an old Amiga shellac-record. Another label from GDR was "Eterna", which would make a great name for an Amiga-successor, doesn't it?
And, yes, it is very strange to have been in a state, that does no longer exists. For some of the elder people here it is the second time in their live... |

[off topic] As you mention shellac-records - last year it was my dad's 80th birthday and I made a big surprise for him.
When he was 18 and living in Magdeburg shortly after WW II, he bought an radiogram with an valve radio and an record changing turntable (78 rpm) fitted to it.
When I was a little child of 2 years that old radiogram already fascinated me. Once - when my parents went shopping - I succeeded opening its closed doors and when my parents returned I sat in front of the radiogram listening to my favorite records.
Shortly after we flew from the GDR and my grandparents got the radiogram. When they died, one of my uncles in the GDR took it. But at some point he had no more use for it and so he chopped that beautiful radiogram - he just saved the drawer with the turntable, which laid in his basement then for a decade or two, before I discovered the rusty, sad remains of the former radiogram in his basement after the demise of the GDR and took it with me to Cologne, where it went into my parents basement. Until I the idea to surprise my dad last year.
For that I took the turntable apart, removed all the rust, lubricated all moving parts and re-assemled it.
Furthermore I repaired an old valve radio (" Schaub Junior", manufactured 1936), that would serve as amplifier in proper style.
Together with my dad's roughly 100 old shellac-records I took the turntable and the radio to the place where my dad had his birthday party.
You cannot imagine what a joy it was for him to play his old records (that he hadn't heard for 40 years or so) and to dance to his old music! All his guests were amazed and had lots of fun to dance to the old music!
Some pics:
Turntable, 1947
Radio "Schaub Junior", 1936
both in action in 2009
despite the age still loud
Pick-Up with steel needle

Time provided I want to make a video where my dad plays all his old records on those old devices and maybe put it on youtube...

Great idea! We should suggest that to A-Eon...

Yeah - I was born in the GDR. But I'm still alive...
Hmmmm - had the GDR (DDR) survived a few years longer, they could have earned a lot of money with the name "DDR". Just Imagine how much RAM is sold today with the name "DDR"...
EDIT: Links added...

That's beautiful man! The best presents are those for which time is spent in the making. It's a labour of love and respect which no bought present can match imho.
In a similar vein, I've just bought a Connoisseur record deck which was the prize possession of someone's Grandfather (now passed). As an homage to his memory, I've promised to play some of his favourite music (Beethoven Sonatas) to test out the deck once I restore it.
Man, they knew how to build beautiful, elegant machinery back then...
[EDIT - added link to record deck pictures on Ebay listing]Last edited by Boot_WB on 06-Feb-2010 at 11:51 AM.

Indeed. And the trick was not to think about an birthday present for weeks, but to listen to my heart. This way it was just a matter of minutes to get the idea...

Sounds interesting. Do you have a link to a photo of your record deck?

Yes - and it`s funny how well they work even today, after you invested some "love" to refurbish them...

Couldn't follow your links I'm afraid - access is limited to your "Myspace friends"
Here is a link to the Ebay listing from which I bought the record deck (link should be good for around 60 days or so). It needs a great deal of TLC - I have some (milspec? ) aerospace wiring (silver plated copper twisted pair, individually shielded) with which I intend to replace the audio wiring, transformer should be easy to replace, and (best of all) I'm hoping to get my Dad (recently retired, ex-cabinet maker) to make a new plinth for it with walnut veneer.
That's the best part for me: collaboration with my Dad on the project, and the chance to spend some time with him in the workshop.
[/OT]
Disclaimer: I assume that Amiga Inc is going down. If not, most of the below is still relevant to their departure from the Amiga(OS) community.
It's with a little sadness that I see Amiga.com disappearing. Since the end of the court case, they have been irrelevant in the Amiga community. I suspect, despite popular perception, that over the last ~10 years they have tried to make a business out of the Amiga brand, however actual progress has generally not been in the direction the community wanted, and a lot of pent-up aggression and frustration is directed their way - perhaps somewhat more than they deserve. They are, after all, still people; Amiga Inc was still (somehow) paying the salaries of a number of people who are now jobless. I don't know whether Jamie Krueger renewed his contract or not, but my thoughts go out to him and everyone who was involved there including Bill McEwan.
RIP Amiga Inc, troubled soul. _________________ Troll - n., A disenfranchised former potential customer who remains interested enough to stay informed and express critical opinions. opp., the vast majority who voted silently with their feet. |

or perhaps not!
If defrauding hundreds of coupon holders wasn't enough then maybe trying to defraud a whole Town was! (Kent). \ The only person from scAmiga Inc to come up with anything he promised was Garry with the T-shirts. |

|There are some clauses in the September 30 agreement concerning bankruptcy of either party. |
