For gcc etc. setup, also a section for cross-compiling on Linux, OSX, Windows, etc. :)

Sure, there's a lot of info about all of these things out there, it'd be nice to have them all in one place. Hopefully things don't change tremendously to quickly obsolete the book though.

@yoodoo2

If I had an OS4 machine: DEFINITELY!

But, since I don't I wouldn't for now, but i'd hope there was some left by the time I finally do...! (Worth it just for the multi-threading stuff, never seen that documented for Amiga!) !

Good luck!

EDIT: This is a long shot, but does anyone know if it's possible to program in Amiga using functional languages? E.g. Lisp, Scheme... I know their are implementations out there... I guess you'd have to call the Amiga library functions somehow...

@yoodoo2

A book that everybody can refer to + listings from example
programs in an amiga magazine (Amiga Future) would be great.

@yoodoo2

I think printed dev docs to have at hand are badly needed since YEARS!
It'd be great to have it, electronic docs are good but i prefer printed papers, so i would definetly buy it.
You could even provide a second volume with suggested advanced topics...

@thread

Some positive comments. Thanks!

The plan is to put out a beginners->intermediate book first, covering the basics mentioned in the poll blurb. I have a list of Advanced topics that may also go in, or could wait for a sequel, including stuff already mentioned, plus Cairo, creating libraries etc, programming the XCore (hopefully) etc etc.

I'll also be looking for some assistance: authors needed. The plan is to pay for their work.

With regards to pdf versions etc - we'll have to see. For obvious economic reasons, I'll need to recoup as much of the printing and development costs as possible.

More details will follow over the weekend.

@yoodoo2

Great idea!

I also probably would. But I'd like to have some chapters on drivers, networking and so on as well as a chapter regarding proper graphics handling (like blitting and so on). (All these things preferrably used within multitasking - but not want to be cheeky).

@yoodoo2

I would snap up a copy in an instant. Would need to be fairly comprehensive and with examples (that are possibly also available in electronic format.)

Looking forward to this becoming available!

Yes, 100% even though I donnot know wether I have to start coding in C. At the moment a few little tools in Hollywood and Arexx are enough... But would buy one anyway. Hopefully it starts of very easy and also gives a good reference to the different functions in Dos.library and Intuition etc....

cheers gerograph

@yoodoo2

Sign me up for one.

How about an electronic version, for example in PDF format? That way I can print it at work (for free), and at the same time save money on shipping. Or maybe just keep it on my laptop and save a tree, or something.

Sign me up for a copy. However, and like others have already pointed out in this thread, you may want to consider planning a chapter setting up the actual GCC environment and getting to grips with the basic compiler tools. Nothing fancy, just enough to get the non *nix-aquinted users started.

Oh - also, I'd love to see cover art inspired by the RKRM-books.

@Petah

Basic gcc set up will be covered in the first chapter - enough to get people compiling.

More advanced gcc usage and cross compiling etc would come under the advanced sections, I think.

One of the hardest aspects of this project will be juggling the needs of Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced programmers.

Same here :)
I'll buy a copy ;)

But, your book must not be a "c learning" book ... but an "amiga OS4 programing" book ;)
Otherwise it'll become a too hard and complex task to achieve in 1 book of 300 pages ...

@yoodoo2
I would buy one to show my support even if I don't know anything about programming. And I don't have the time (or patience..) to learn it atm.

But a good book would be really nice for new and existing developers so it's something I'd like to support.

@ yoodoo2
Is that 18.00 US Dollars?
What do you think the shipping would cost?
