I'm sorry, but I think there will be atleast one empty X1000 case on E-bay, shortly after I bought my X1000 machine.....

I don't like it. But to each it's own though.

I don't like it either and my X1000 will most likely be transplanted into a different case also.

What is it with these doors on the front of cases, I mean they are just damned inconvenient and will get in the way. They might look neat & tidy whilst the computer is off and not in use. Not many people want to stand there looking at their computer in its off state though, most users DO like to USE it. Every time you want to load a CD/DVD, or access the front panel you've got to open that door and have it flapping around into your workspace. Cases with doors simply do not make sense in my opinion.

@raumfahre

What about a case with a door over most of the front but not over the CD/DVD drive?

If the face is all that bothers, maybe Aeon could make some more covers in the future.
How about a face that can have interchangeable skins?

My A1-XE is in a case with a front door, and I don't feel like that door gets in the way. I generally only use CDs/DVDs when I'm installing something; the rest of the time that door is closed (helps dampen the sound even more). The door also helps keep dust away from the drives.

To be honest, I don't get obsessions with case aesthetics. People wanted a case that looks like an Amiga (i.e., has the Amiga logo on the front), and this case will deliver that. No-one (AFAIK) buys a Mac and then transplants it to a case of their own taste. And no, Mac cases aren't universally cool; remove the Apple logo, and you'd find people both people that love them, and hate them. A Mac case is cool because it's got an Apple logo; it's a badge of being part of the "better" computer world.

I'm sure that people are going to protest about what I've just written, and say that Mac cases are well designed, blah, blah, blah. True, but there are very well designed "standard" PC cases too, but some people would have you believe that they're absolutely horrible, while others will swear that they're the best ever. Why? They're not Mac cases, or Alienware cases, or whatever other "cool" brand you can think of.

For me, the most important aspects of case design are that it's:
- quiet
- Robust
- Has good cooling
- Has no sharp edges (I have used cases that cover your fingers with cuts every time you open them to change stuff)
- Easy access to cards
- Easy access to everything (e.g., I should be able to add RAM without disassembling almost the entire machine)
- Adequate power cabling that's long enough to reach all devices
- Snap fit drive bays

Basically, the case has to be easy to use, both every day, and when working on the internals. And yes, when it comes to an Amiga, I would like to have that Amiga logo there so that it doesn't look like a plain PC.

Hans

P.S. I like the look of the X1000 case mockup

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot one important thing in case design: proper air filtering so the thing doesn't get clogged up with dust.

Nice idea, but I wouldn't want any additional skins, and I wouldn't be prepared to pay extra for it. Sticking with one design is better.

@Hans

I agree with everything you wrote there. I got a antec p182 which seems to be kind of similar and like you wrote the door serves a purpose and I was just wondering who are using cds/dvds all the day like a maniac?

This is a good tower and it looks good too.

@Trevor

This is your baby, design the case to your own liking, most of us will live with it. I like the case, any overall dimensions for it yet?

@all

The A4000T has a door on the front, never heard of anyone ripping out the board because they didn't like the case. One thing existing NG owners complain about, is using a PC case with no Amiga stickers for them. If you throw out the case, you may as well toss out the new Amiga kb as well.

@sundown

And yet this is a business for Trevor, one assumes, not a hobby. Therefore any astute businessman will value critical feedback more than plaudits as an aid to broaden appeal of the product. It will be too late now to rejig the case or do a range but the criticism could be taken on board for a later production run.

You might, and will, say but the criticism isn't constructive, it doesnt tell Trevor anything about how to improve.

The point is, the business should assign someone to ask questions of those that don't like it, in private, until they come up with something specific. Negativity is a valuable asset for a marketeer.

OTOH, I can't think of why I don't like it. I'm not in the market for a new Amiga at all being satisfied with the Sam and having other needs on my bank balance, so I can say right now I'm not asking for anyone from that business to contact me.

There are those who will obsessively pour over every picture, photo or whatnot looking to turn a bit of PR into a PR boner. Trevor might start to feel the heat on this, but its one thing to deal with the damned if you do and damned if you don't bigrade, and another to ship a product.

Any product delivery team needs to maintain its equilibrium and morale. Perhaps a good reason to stay off fora for the most part and just assign a marketing person to go deal and make decisions on how to reply based on building a network of friendship.

"I'm sorry you don't find it appealing, how can we make it better next time?" is a powerful marketing message.

Not to be bossy or anything.

Totally off topic that just had to be made?

Nice insult of people, where most are even members at this (AW.net) very site.

I think most people are more concerned about the price, rather on the sexyness of the case.

@DaveP

I think we'd both agree that there's no way to make everyone happy with any single design for a board, case, or kb, though I see no reason why a case can't be different colors. The only real solution is to sell a system piece by piece & let ppl choose their own case/kb.

I don't think a-eon wants to produce a hacker system, they want to put out a system that ppl will recognize when they see it, just like you would a Sony product. Those that want to save money can wait for the new SAM.

@koft

I like the case, specially if it is a boing ball in Engraved into the tower, I managed to see this case used at the Gadget show, and I can tell you its ultra quite and that's for a powerful pc with huge multiple fans which I would image the AmigaOne wont really need.

The one thing I think they perhaps should of been added to the pictures released by a-eon, is the words "concept", to just make it a little clearer that this is not the final pics. Maybe to shut a few people up the real photo should be uploaded.

@retro

It has been announced that it will have AmigaOneX branded keyboard and mouse.

Some simple (almost totally passive) adapter to xorro slot would enable to use all legacy Amiga HW via xena.

@thread

For my PC machines @ home and @ work the only working a-eon web is this:
http://www.a-eon.com/oldbrowser.html
