Does anyone know where there is an OSX version? I've tried installing fink and using "fink install worker" and "sudo apt-get install worker" but neither will work and report "Failed: no package found for specification 'worker'!"

To be honest, I really tried to like Magellan 2, but I couldn't. For whatever reason, I just could not get on with it as easily as DOpus 4 running on top of WB. I had a custom startup that allowed me to press a qualifier to boot into Magellan as WB replacement, or just my normal WB3.9, but I found myself using WB+DOpus4 more, so made that the default.

It wasn't even about not configuring it - I just did not like using it back then, and I couldn't see the point in trying to configure it to behave "like" DOpus4, when I had a perfectly good working DOpus4 already - which itself was nicely set up for my needs.

I get along with it a little better via Amikit admittedly, but then I tend to use my cloned A4000 UAE setup more than I do AmiKit (I love my shortcuts for things like shift-esc for a CLI window )

I guess you had different stuff starting up with each selection, but for others I'd like to mention that when you've installed DOpus5 correctly, you can select if you want to boot into it or into normal WB by pressing shift key while booting. There's no need for custom startups for it. DOpus5 doesn't change any of your system files, except C:LoadWB command for its own and backuped original gets executed with that shift key.

It would still give many nice features even if cofigured like DOpus4. Like built-in ftp, marvellous inline editing, pop up menus for more options to filetypes, startmenus, local & global hotkeys, script launching on certain events, powerful arexx interface, good search and file find options etc...

I have all my keyboard shortcuts defined in DOpus5 (global shortcuts do work even if dopus isn't active and other screens & everywhere). Still launching shell with dopus hotkeys on MorphOS :P

Amikit's config feels bit weird and limited for my taste... didn't feel home at all with it when tried it last time :) But that's the good feature of Magellan2.. you can configure it so many ways that everyone should be able to have it like they want.

I simply love Magellan II. And probably, it's the reason why I stayed with Amiga.

Wasn't there at sometime the attempt to make Dopus5 Magellan II commercially available to AmigaOS4? What has happened and why can't I spend again my money on Dopus5 for AmigaOS which is simply worthwhile each Cent?

Maybe we should ask Jonathan Potter to make Dopus Magellan II open source?

D'uh, I know.

Gentoo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentoo_Penguin

Both file manager and distribution took its name.

For me, DOpus < 5 was the greatest filemanager of its time (shortly followed by Diskmaster2). And on Linux, Worker is really worth a try, because it doesn't need GTK+ (like Gentoo) and gives a kind of DOpus feeling.

Short answer: not going to happen.

Nice interview, but you didn't ask what's up with the OS4 port of DOpus 5 licensed to GuruMeditation. I would really have had some light shed over that sad mystery...

Hard covering every aspect in a short interview i'm afraid. Perhaps a follow up interview will be posted later. Seems to be a lot of questions unanswered regarding Dopus and Amiga..

DOpus Magellan is, for me, the best Amiga program ever.

I miss it every day, despite being without it for more than 6 years. ;)

Yeah, reason to stay with Amiga and the main feature when selecting next gen OS. I stayed with classic Amiga until I was sure I could use Magellan2 (or better, heh) with some faster system.

There used to be something about Magellan comming to Amiga again but nevertheless, A1200 Magellan and the pc for a joke too... Friends just don't know how to use it.

I'd buy Magellan for OS4 but there is a ten years time from the news so not going or looking longer as my "weener" goes?

(Immigrate Magellan,MUI, OS4,IB,TurboPrint etc all etc more all was my dream then...)

You and me stupid people, now we even have Nokia and Windows!

Huh. (Bought some shares still;)

I sent your questions to Jonathan Potter, which resulted in a "Part 2" of my interview. The answer is quite exciting, and should give some clearification to what is the Dopus Magellan status of today.

Interview with Jonathan Potter, creator of Directory Opus - part 2.
