I've written a new article for the Hyperion Blog.

It's on setting up your hard drive for AmigaOS 4.1 Classic.

And just in case you missed it in the text :

Quote:
For AmigaOS 4.1 Classic you must place your boot partition fully inside the first 4GB of your hard disk.

(It was mentioned once or twice, but you can bet someone will still fail to read it )

Little part which maybe you will update: making bootable FFS partiion are bad idea, and need to say that SFS are better, because:

1. no validation (very annoing process, and will happens for sure after long time of usage)
2. slow
3. because of slow, if you will for example will unpack AISS package on the FFS system partition (thousands of little files) , every app which use AISS will slowing downs a lot, and every programms which use it will runs in 20-30 seconds.

For sure you need to notice it. If i know that before, i never choice for my system partition FFS.

At the time of this writing a SWAP partition on the Amiga's IDE controller (scsi.device) is not supported.

I guess this is due to scsi.device still being in 68k asm, right? Is anyone working on a ppc native version? I assume this will affect most A1200 users...

@AmiDog

Hi there. Well I can't really comment further than what is in the article. But I will just say that work continues even beyond the Classic 4.1 release

Sure I agree. The only reason why I won't fully rule out FFS is because it can use all the recovery options in partition wizard but SFS can't.

I also us SFS, btw.

Right, i thinking about the same. So, maybe saying like this:

"as boot partition you can use FFS and SFS, but we say that better use SFS nowadays, because it faster than FFS, not have "validation" problem, and just more efficient in compare with FFS. The only pluse of FFS, its that for years of availability, its have good recovery tools, while with SFS you will live at your own risk. But even with such limitation, SFS worth of it, and you will see benefits when will start to use os for real"

something like that or maybe with a bit "easy" words, just to point users, that FFS are not so good for practical reassons.

For example i install my os4 on peg2, by that "manual" coming with os4. And uhmm ... only because of that "use ffs" , i still stuck with it (lazy to reinstall, and just fear to do it right now while works on owb, will do later), and have all that fat problem : validation :)
Not saing that i for few month can't understand why all AISS based programms runs in 20 seconds, and for other it runs in realtime (because its pretty logical to install AISS on system partition => problems).

@gregthecanuck

I don`t know... you`d have to ask the programmer of JXFS.

Fantastic! I noticed you included Filer according to screenshots! GREAT STUFF! Congratulations, guys! A question: is it possible to turn on shadows on windows somehow? If yes, displaying this possibility will attract even more ppl :)

Yes it's possible with a Radeon graphics card. It's in the Classic FAQ on the CD (which is like 17 or 18 pages :)

But basically you do it in GUI prefs.
