What happend with VICE?

Does someone know why the AOS 4 release got issues while it works well on other systems (from what I've read MOS)?

I'm using it in Win 7 just fine while under AOS 4 the old issues with joystick not working, crashes when changing language and sound issue ruins it.

Is it some issues with AOS 4.1, the emulator(s), something else?

I'm just using x64.

I can see on aminet that the other systems got version 2.2a while AOS 4 got 2.2.

The joystick works for me but not properly.
Vice acts as though the joystick is being constantly moved in one direction.
Think it pulls to the left if memory serves.

The MorphOS version doesn't do that.

There's version 2.3 for OS4 on SourceForge:

@Trixie

Thanks. Will give it a try later today. I hope that it works or works better . Shouldn't this have been posted as news?

I tend to get nostalgic every now and then so VICE is important since it was the first computer I ever owned.

@TiredofLife

Oh no, you're correct regarding the joystick . Also sound is a bit distorted and the bug regarding schanging language are still there (yes it works fine to edit the config file though so it's the least issue).

Time to wait again I guess. Thank you for the info.

@TiredofLife

As you imply, not everyone has this problem.

Worked here now, with VICE 2.2, as before.

4Button USB digital Joystick.
Work fine with UAE & NeoGeo (these 2 tested).

There's a special version on my website too, which enables the SID chips on a Catweasel MkIV.

I'm using a USB Competition Pro which works correctly with everything apart from VICE.

@hotrod

I think I've figured out the problem with some joysticks. The Commodore joysticks were very simple, just basicly five on/off switches, four directions plus fire. Most modern joysticks are proportional, lots of gradations between left and right and up and down. It could depend on how the old programs read the joystick. I solved the problem by using the "hat" on the joystick, which functions like the old joysticks. I thought this made sense and it seemed to work for me.

Slightly off topic, although still Vice related, but does anyone have Blacky_Stardust's (Vice project leader) email address please? He said he had an amithlon native version for me some time back, but Ive not seen him around the usual places for quite a while now so never got it from him.
Ive done a little googling and while he comes up Ive yet to find his email address.
Thanks in advance.

Logitech Dual Action here. This one was born for emulators clearly. You can press a button to have the left two-axis controller function as if it was digital.

Nice find. Can you provide a model number for it? Or a link with a picture of it?

How is the response time with using it with any of the emulators? I used to have a Competition Pro USB joystick and the lag time it had was very bad and made using it with most Amiga games useless, or at least very frustrating.

@amigadave

"PID" is VV539. USB Inspector says it is powered by a mere 30 mA.

Picture: Dual Action

My controllers - that are old by now - are darker. And I found pictures where the "Dual Action" is printed on top of the unit as well.

Oh, I never even thought about any lag. I have pla.. enjoyed Gran Turismo 2 with these, also in 2 player mode (FPSE in software render). Neither player had any misgivings.

No, it's been a long time since I e-mailed him and back then it was regarding other things. Maybe I should send him an e-mail. Regarding the joystick it's a competition pro and it behaves correctly in the Windows port of VICE so it should work with AOS 4 too. I also got a PS1 look-a-like joypad that I haven't tried with VICE but I don't want to use it, doesn't have the right feel. Actually the competition pro isn't perfect either, I really miss my old Tac-2 joystick. The competition pro is so stiff! My thumb hurts after a while even though the joystick is a little less stiff from all the playing of old games.

The PS1 pad, which is a Seiktek also got a switch for analog/digital but I don't want to use a pad even if it works. This is one of those cases where I just play C64 games in Windows instead which is a shame. The more that I can do on the Amiga the better it is.

Mine works fine under Windows version, but fails to do so in OS4 Vice.

Not sure if the issue is purely with joysticks. VICE used to be pretty stable under previous OS4 versions but have become very unstable uner update4. I can't even get to the point of playing a game.
