Is that any sooner than the year (or 2 or more) ago "soon" we had at that time?

Hyperion Entertainment is fine I think ...
... but maybe dark powers destroyed Amiga in the old days.

In times of cyberwar it would likely be unwise to use MS and Intel.

It's time to wake up.

Interesting thought: could the USA possible promote AmigaOS to be used in the EU in the (false) assumption that the occupation with funny AmigaOS will hinder the advance of mature Linux in the EU and that the EU will waste time with (alleged) outdated hardware (PPC)?

One has to be careful but I think that AmigaOS could very well work out fine.

Your estimation imo does not hold any water

Porting from OS3 to OS4Final costed Hyperion 1.5 milions EUR - according to revealed court documents.

It's just the same imo

Why you think that porting to some alien hardware architecture will be as easy as porting to another CPU in the same architecture? As you wrote, it take much time to port OS4 even on another computer with similar architecture. Proper port (with reasonable compatibility) to ARM (or x86) would need even more time and more intensive development (eg. money for more developers).

Quote:
so it depends, where you want to go.

Exactly, if you want 64 bit dual-core CPU and PCIe x16, you haven´t much choices in the ARM world (not yet).

Quote:
ARM surely brings you much more options

ARM is nice architecture with great future perspective. It is wise to study possibility of porting of OS4 to that family of CPUs. Today there aren´t ARM SoC comparable with PA6T-1682M for desktop use. In future, situation may change. Personaly, I would prefer port to x86.

@KingKong

indeed i am hearing rumours that some 'elder statesmen' of the EU are using amigas to fetch their email and this is interfering with the USA ECHELON surveillance network to keep track of the ruling elite of the EU. Of course it is understandable that these EU statesman would use the technology they are familiar with and have grown up with and can play It Came FromThe Desert but my understanding is that USA inteligence is quite upset that that they are using AmigaOS tech which is beyond the capabilities of the Echelon Surveillance System. So a battle is brewing. Will the EU allow the Americans free reign, or will AmigaOS be funded to defend european principles and human rights?

Sorry, but that's pure fantasy all the time it doesn't have a feature set that would make it possible. It'd take dozens of full time developers for several years before it could hope to have the features needed to even be an option.

Very true, but I believe it would actually be easier to build a "good enough OS" from scratch, rather than modify AmigaOS into one.

Are you an US-Agent making fun of me?

Anyway - I'm instoppable.

@opi

My "interesting thought" is a trick to get the AmigaOS rights cheaper. It may work even if I write this 'cause the Wintel-gang must be convinced of their own stuff.

I know that statement already and you are correct in quoting it. I do remember it my self as well. However, if it is true then it means that they have spent resources either to inadequate people or into wrong directions within the project of OS4.x porting and further development. I mean.. whoever has used an OS4.x system will surely not think that this tremendous amount has been spent on it! Furthermore, from a financial pov, It's impossible/irrational to invest 1.5 m. USD in a market of 1.000 users. In ten years lifetime, I doubt that Hyperion is profiting more more than 25.000 profit/annually from the amiga market (and I must be really-really generous with my estimation). That would mean that Hyperion is working with unbelievable losses or as a charity. Dave told previously in this thread that he had to hire around 30 dedicated software engineers/programmers for almost 2 years in order to create an Amiga-like OS (if I have understood correctly). If today you had to hire the same amount of people, I am fairly sure that these money (almost 2 Millions) would be adequate to patch any OS4.x lack of feature, port it to all available platforms, expand its software list with all the mainstream open-source programs and you would still be within budget and time limit.

You had to be thrilled when they told you that about me! It has been explained to you why your idea is just nonsense and now you're going from bad idea straight into conspiracy cranking "what?" level up to 11. Please, continue.

With a million $ you'd better off starting a complete new OS from scratch than porting a 25 year old non-secure outdated OS to x86... my two cents. Why insisting on staying compatible ?

Why insist on "being Amiga"?

If we lose compatibility (along with all Amiga IP) and "The Name"(tm), there are absolutely no trademark issues etc. to worry about!

to make a platform that cannot run any amiga-software... What sense does that make?

All those earthquakes and now King Kong's arrived. Is this is a sign of Nibiru? That's the question I want answered.

It's a sign that Nibru is made from WinTel. OK, I don't have any joke left in me. I need to go, write something that will be fun and not make me cringe.
