We all know perfectly well that the netbook announcement was just tossed out there to derail the MOS 3.0 release

If you are hoping to watch HTML5 video within your browser then 667Mhz just doesn't cut it, so IMO 800Mhz+ would be needed.

Strange, last time I checked, I was able to watch YouTube quite nicely on my PowerMac G4/450Mhz with an ATi Rage (using about 45-50% of the CPU). It wasn't OS4 and Timberwolf tho'...

Plans change, but that is most definitely -not- what was said at AmiWest last year.

I agree "introduce" does not mean "on sale", but I would have expected "introduce" to mean there would have been a statement if not an actual unveiling by end of 2nd quarter.

One Word
Drivers .
You cant put pci cards into a netbook. The drivers for onboard devices have to be done.
Look at the situtaion with the Sam460ex and X1000 .

@Spectre660

If this is the case then why not openly communicate with the community, along these lines:

The AmigaOS 4.x port to the [insert netbook model/OEM/name/whatever] is moving forward, currently developing drivers for [insert GPU/wi-fi/powermanagement/whatever], we're aiming to release [insert images/videos/hardwarerunning] within [insert XYZ], stay tuned for more.

They have a Blog, a Forum, a Website. If they do not cultivate their target audience then what's the point.

Communicate what? That the OS4 project is pretty much dead, because they don't have enough manpower left?

I'm all for transparency, but I can understand why they don't communicate that.

Fair enough. Sad but true.

The fact that, for example, the AmigaOS official website has been a community effort speaks for itself, there's not enough money.

There are maybe/hopefully/almost 500 - 2.000 AmigaOS users, I assume (better not assume anything in life, but let it be) that Ben did some research / analysis in terms of "market" growth / sustainability, right? If the response for an "announced" (*) AmigaOS netbook created more buzz than whatever they did in the last 10 years, do the math.

(*) Quotation marks are intentional, have a look at the video, it's not even funny. Again, if Amiga is a labour of love then why on earth everything has to be so improvised, amateurish, hysterical. If you do love something you should take care of it properly, right?

Engage your audience, cultivate your community, let your brand speak, there's potential for great storytelling within the AmigaOS scene (past, present, future). But no, it's better to stand still behind a curtain and show up once a year in an obscure self-referring meeting. Jeez.

In a community the size of this one, this is something you can even do in your spare time if you have the motivation, no need to pay social media experts and whatnot.

More than anything else this is what pisses me off, a lack of vision / voice / presence, more than any futile bounty dispute or missing backplate or graphic card driver fee (the list grows each and every day).

Ok, I could go on and on, but I've ranted too much now.

This isn't just about money, it's about ego, paranoia and a decade of bullshit.

It used to be about loving what you do. I used to be a betatester back when there was a real team, with some real motivation. Witnessing that was great.

Now it's about who owns what and that you don't want to let go after more than a decade. And that those who have the most stamina might really hit the jackpot in the end - if they just hold on hard enough and ignore all the bad things around them.

I guess too much goodwill from my part, but seriously if this is the case then it'll be game over soon.

Barana woke up a thread that has been dormant for 9 months.

Obviously there was nothing to report.

Unwillingly, you gave most hope for some sort of nettop optimized OS 4.2 and hardware as we know of ... being able to surf only in one task?

"Pentium II 250 MHz class performance wouldn´t impress anyone even 10 years ago."

Well, with RasberryPI we are seeing P2/300Mhz caliber HW to get good sales.

Interesting... What were you using to watch it? Because my 1.33GHz G4 iBook cannot be used to watch Youtube videos in Safari on a clean install, and my 1.8GHz G5 PowerMac struggles as well.

@Daedalus
It was running MorphOS, with OWB web browser. Your iBook and your G5 Mac is not supported currently. However, the iBook support is rumored to arrive very soon (for the next version).

"It was running MorphOS"
Only AmigalikeOSs make it possible.

AOS4&netbook:
Last AOS4 news was from April (update for x1000 users) and they have communicated Gallium and multicore being worked on. The latest two big features that were communicated are so huge that it could explain a few months lack of real new info. (so rumoring AOS4 death at this point is just silly ... it took years to do MOS3.0 after all, etc.)
+btw, summer vacations just started in central europe, expect nothing for a month.

And netbook is a OEM project, it's not just up to Hyperion to communicate it. IMO, all communications need to be ok with the OEM.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Well, I gave away the G5 on an indefinite loan so will probably never see it again anyway. MOS for the iBook will be nice though!
