That is an OT comment but the "Strategy" seems to be spend all developer time porting to hardware platforms... I agree more energy should be towards Software projects but they needed a good platform. I guess X1000 is that so hopefully now things move fwd with software and drivers and ports. (Like FF beta is nice, new funding for Hans for 3d drivers, etc)

the products vanished, not the persons/companies. I had one contact to "Softwood" 2 years ago, he answered that he has financial problems and cannot make the programs freeware (as far as I understand because of licensed parts). I sent 2-3 emails after but never got a answer again.

Digita has dropped Amiga but still exists. They said a clear no when i asked.

AmigaWriter is quite nice. it lacks some features, but it also has some neat ideas. For example a cool text flow tool that rather remembers to a DTP program than a word processor.
Back in the days (around y2k) when I used it on my A1200PPC to write my pregraduate university stuff it yielded to nice enough results, but it was a bit crashy though. Luckily most of the crashes announced themselves - the cursor jumped it sposition a little bit - last chance to save).
I had issues with line spacing (put letters high or low changes line spacing by default, which is annoying when writing scientific stuff ( in particular: mathematical or chemical formulas)).
On MorphOS I found it rather stable then (I think it is similar on OS4), but nevertheless I switched to OOo and MSO. Mostly because of sharing files with others and comment functions and general convenience. Since a while I also use google.docs for some things.
I think AmigaWriter is a good to have thing as alternative to the online services (trust google?) and MSO/OOo.

Great review! I also like to use AmigaWriter - I set it up as my default MS Word document reader so when I double click a word .doc icon it automatically comes up in AmigaWriter.
I also use Final Writer and Wordsworth, and my favorite - TurboText! Why - I love the easy learning macros on Turbotext when I have to perform repeated complex text changes within a document. I haven't ever seen anything to match how easy Turbotext allows mouse, keyboard and menu interactions to be entered into a macro.

If the future of the Amiga means, using same technologies than on the PC (I mean: Phyton, Firefox, OpenGL, Radeon-Cards, JavaScript, etc.) - the community will focus on porting existing things to the amiga.

And so the difference to the "standard" PC will becoming smaller, because you will be able to do the same things on both systems.

But thats NOT what the Amiga was! The Amiga was different. And thats why we had so much fun!

So: In April I will start to set up a new strategy (until then I have to finish my studies, sorry).

And the strategy should bring the community to work on something new. Something who does not exist at the moment. (For Example Using the Amiga for making holografic films or to communicate with birds or with trees or whatever its on your mind...)

I used the 68k version to write my University dissertation so that I could import it to the Uni PeeCees to use the network laser printer with the .RTF export (and a CrossDOS formatted 720k floppy) which was the best the Amiga could offer. The .doc import, wordcount, spell checker and footnote features were also great.

However, if you try to format tables then the program becomes very unstable and unusable. This is a simple WORD Processor only. It is not good for tables, pictures etc. IF Pagestream 2.2 had had .rtf export I think I'd have used that instead.

Ah, good to hear you managed to get in contact, i was asking because IIRC someone else tried to reach them years ago with no luck at all and they're nowhere to be found.
This gives at least some small hope that someday he could change his mind!

Yeah, i had a look at their site a couple of years ago and saw that they're doing some sort of accounting software or the like... the Amiga is mentioned in their history page thogh.
But i didn't like Digita's products anyway, i've always considered Softwood's far superior (especially in the spreadsheet department)!

I believe second hand or storage findings are your best bet.
Regarding Wordworth, i thought Danwood's link was of dubious legality and that they gave him those generic registration codes only for people who already own the original media?

Edit: forgot to add that there were some "light" versions of all the three wordprocessors given away as coverdisks back in the day.

IIRC AmigaWiter supports Word 95, Word 6.0 and Word 97/2000/XP okay. I have not done extensive testing of formatting with built in tables and stuff like that, but from what I have tested, standard formatting, fonts (if you have the right ones!), margins, tabs, etc all seem to work just fine.
Maybe if I get a chance I'll do some more extensive testing.

You can make Wordworth look better by adding it to the Screens list and activating the new look. Gadgets still have that square look. So now we have the OS2/3 new look and on top the OS4 new look. Where will it end?

I tried to import Docs into Writer but it always says that are too old when they are new! But a friend has trouble installing it when he had both English and German locales activated. It kept going to one he didn't want.

I still do word processing on my AmigaOne. Sure I've had it a long time now but I bought it to use as an Amiga and do all my stuff on. I see no point in buying an NG Amiga if you don't use it.

If you do all the nornal stuff on a PC or Mac why bother using an Amiga at all? I've seen this happen. A friend loved his PPC A4000 until it broke down and sparked an interest in PPC Macs. Now he has an A1 but hardly uses it because it is overshadowed by a quad core 2.5Mhz G5 with a working browser. And so it begins.

OTOH I would agree with you over the FireFox port for instance. As it stands TimberWof still looks like a PC application sitting inside an Amiga Window. So I don't see the point of that. If I want to use a PC application I fire up the PC. If I want to use an Amiga application I fire up an Amiga.

it should, at least it does on my SAM and my peg2. i'm not sure what could cause that. have you tried contacting alinea for support via email?

On my Sam460 version 2.2 of AmigaWriter works great under Update5.

Was using GoogleDocs before but am using AmigaWriter more and more as its way faster but I have got a rubbish broadband speed here so that may explain googledocs slowness.

The good thing about using GoogleDocs was that I can type something in it and when my Son has finished playing on the Pc I can open GoogleDocs on the PC and print it.

Turbotext is a raw text editor. It does not support MS Word or any other bulky document types. It is all about changing up ascii text.
I have used the best of the best tools available on the PC (purchased for me by General Electric and Rockwell when I worked at those places) and for learning macro capability, Turbotext beats everything on the PC platform I have found.
Again, it is NOT for fancy formatted documents, but for ascii files such as source code files etc. There is really no limit to what it can learn to do on a repeated basis with a simply macro button.

I'm not sure what isn't "modern" about Wordworth's GUI. Here is how it looks on AmigaOS4:

Still looks pretty good to me. I also found Wordworth 6 to be extremely stable (unlike AmigaWriter), and to be very easy to use (it is organised far more logically than MS Word).
