| This was just announced!
http://ultimateppc.nl/index.php
Gideon Zweijtzer (of 1541-Ultimate fame) and Rutger Bevaart have teamed up to bring renewed innovation to the Classical Amiga by announcing the UltimatePPC today, the ultimate CPU expansion card for the Amiga 3000 & 4000. This new card will bring unparalleled performance and many great new features to the Amiga series of computers that were not available previously and give current users a viable upgrade path for aging components. It also opens new possibilities for newer versions of the Amiga Operating System or alternatives to run on your classic hardware with great performance. The UltimatePPC puts your Amiga right back on your desk as the most versatile and fun computer that has ever existed! Right now the UltimatePPC is in active development, we expect to be able to take pre-orders at the end of 2012. Please visit our project website at http://ultimateppc.nl for availability information, specifications and detailed status reports. Gideon & Rutger
I hope to every pagan deity in the universe that they can pull this off! Last edited by ddni on 23-May-2012 at 01:11 PM.

Nice to see but I think we had better wait until release before any A3000/4000 owners get too excited.
Not sure what size market is left in the A3000/4000 level.
It is clearly a labour of love! (Like everything Amiga). _________________ Sam |

Doesn't look like it. I think it says they will accept pre-orders in the future - but if someone wants to do so it's not like someone is holding a gun to their head.
Give them a chance. With their past history of releasing C64 products (http://www.nightfallcrew.com/18/06/2011/unboxing-1541-ultimate-ii-by-gideon-zweijtzer/) I actually think this is something that has a good chance of seeing the light of day. Not for me though - my A4000 died years ago... Last edited by -Sam- on 23-May-2012 at 02:11 PM. Last edited by -Sam- on 23-May-2012 at 02:10 PM.

Having owned a Blizzard PPC board for one of my A1200's for at least the past 7 years, I'm just wondering... what would someone use a PPC board on an A3000 or A4000 for ???
I only ask because the only thing I get any use of from my PPC board is running LAME and Frodo (A C64 emulator), haven't found much else PPC (software wise) that's actually useful on classic hardware with a PPC board, Don't say OS4.0 classic either as I've got that and it;s slower than a dead donkey (and about as useful)... _________________

They have a picture of a board. Assembled. Way more believable than an MS Paint block diagram..._________________ All glory to the Hypnotoad! |

you are absolutely right. AmigaOS4.x is painful slow on a BPPC with its 32 bit memory and no scsi support.
On a CSPPC is all another matter! (and with this new toy, way better)

If this card will have a Sam460 equivalent CPU it will not even be comparable to a 15 years old BlizzardPPC and OS4 would run very smoothly on it. I also have a BlizzPPC but I promized myself to never get OS4 for it, because it just can't be good. I want a proper machine for that, such as the A1-XE I have, and the X1000 I hope I soon will have.
This card (the picture someone posted) also seems to have a DVI port so probably integrated graphics, which would make it close to the CPU and therefore fast (not having to go over the ancient Zorro bus). _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

If Gideon and friends are using a newer/faster PPC, which it sounds like they are, then this problem will not affect their design the same way it does Phase5's board. _________________ All glory to the Hypnotoad! |

Purely because you can, I guess. Although a board like that will most likely be many times faster than the BlizzardPPC in your A1200. Some people like to use them for things like playing music, videos, 3D rendering etc., where the extra horsepower is quite welcome. And it might just be fast enough to make OS4.1 usable _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |
