Hi all,

I need some urgent help. I have been happily using my Amiga X1000 without incident until today. The partition setup on the HD and X1000 hardware is unchanged from when AmigaKit shipped it to me.

Now it won't boot. At all. When I turn on the X1000 is comes up with X1000 splash screen and menu to select AmigaOS4 boot or CD boot. When it tries to boot the HD (I assume) it immediately cuts to a black screen saying only:

*** Program Exit Status = 0
CFE>

After a few seconds Some exception dump flashes too fast on the screen to see (or to be able to use the CFE interface) and then it automatically reboots. The X1000 continues to error and reboot like this in a loop until I power it off!

I have no idea what this error means, but I am guessing not good.

I could of course try to burn off the AmigaOS 4.1.5 disc and try to boot it, but I don't want to reinstall if the problem if otherwise fixable.

At the moment I can't use my X1000 at all so I would greatly appreciate any help! I didn't receive anything from Hyperion Ent to register for support so I am asking you guys for help first...perhaps @amigakit knows something about this problem too?

FYI I was using Dosbox under AmigaOS4 today, getting Windows 95 working under it, running on the work partition - I was pretty happy at this point and ready to turn it off and then it locked up with Grim Reaper error. DOSBox does this freezing a lot when tinkering with the DOSBox.conf hd image settings and usually power off/on is enough to fix it. I did it several times today with no problem. But not this last time...I also installed Stargus on work partition today to try out Starcraft which worked ok. Despite this. I am not convinced that is the problem but thought it worth mentioning...

I backed up the sys: partition (not the work partition) to USB disk a few days ago, so I can restore sys: easily enough if reinstalling from AmigaOS4 Disc is the only option left.

Appreciate any help guys - at the moment I am stumped, don't know what to try and a bit upset about the whole thing right now.

Catcha,
Epsilon

@Epsilon

I don't know a lot about how CFE (the bootloader used on these boards) boots OS4, but is there some sort of secondary bootloader residing in the RDB of the harddrive?

I would in any case try to boot off of a CD even if the intention isn't immediately to reinstall the OS. If it boots the CD but not the HD then the problem lies with the HD, if it boots neither then the problem is deeper.

@Epsilon

Try the obvious, reseat the ram and all the drive cables, boot from cd and check that amigaboot.of is in the root of your boot partition (x1000's equivalent of SLB).

Since you are apparently not yet registered for the X1000's official forum, I have made a post on your behalf:
http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1086

BTW, you don't make it clear whether you have tried registering for (and are waiting to be accepted to) the forum, or whether think you don't have the right info to register. I would try asking AmigaKit if it is the latter.

I would question the same thing Severin mentioned for this... CFE errors in booting seem to be related to this from what I have seen on these forums about the X1000

@all

I have solved it now I think, fingers crossed...

I burnt off AmigaOS4.1.5 CD and booted off it and it worked ok. I booted to live CD workbench and could see the sys partition and work partition no problems.

I then copied the amigaboot.of file and kickstart folder from my usb backup disk to the sys folder and rebooted. and it boots now from HD!

Very glad that I did a backup, that the LiveCD function exists and that usb support works from it as it saved me today....

Looks like it is working ok now so I guess the amigaboot.of file got corrupted somehow...

I was really worried for a minute there so it is a big relief.

Thanks all for your help - really appreciate it!

Catcha,
Epsilon

@ChrisH

Thanks for doing this. I was really worried it might have been a more serious issue and I am glad I could solve it myself with the LiveCD and my backups...

I thought I was supposed to receive registration information via email that I needed to be on the forum....probably could be wrong about that - I'll check my emails...

Perhaps it was included in the paperwork with the X1000. I'll have a look around.

Thanks,
Epsilon

@ChrisH

I checked my first contact document now. I was correct in my understanding that I should be getting an email from Hyperion with the details to register my system with them for updates, upgrades, etc. I haven't received any email from them as yet for that.

There was some further information I missed though on the document...I didn't realise that you needed to register separately for the support portion. It said I would be sent some details on how to do this also but I haven't as yet. I guess it involves just registering on the forums site...

So, I have gone to the said forums just now and registered myself on there. An Administrator needs to activate the account before I can post there. But, anyway, I made the first step now to report any further problems with the X1000 on that forum and not bug people here!

Thanks for the point in the right direction. Hopefully I get the email Hyperion mentioned soon.

@all

I kept the offending problem child amigaboot.of file that stopped the hd booting if it is of any value to look at by anyone.

Epsilon

@Epsilon

Please edit your first post and change the subject to something like...
"Amiga X1000 - Not Working (Solved)".

That can save a lot of people's time trying to figure out what the problem may be on the first post and having to read the whole thread to find out that you fixed it already

@TrevorDick

No offence to Trevor but I really got a bit angry for Alan about my expencive A1.
Not seen that for a year and another it was not working. Redhouse vanished.

I hope this "curse" is away now and there is really a reliable one that could be bought.
Something new comming after the start? (I know all asks it) A little hint.

Even my pc works a few weeks, after it corrects itself for a while. Not buying a new one before summer/autumn. Hope there is something available?

Waiting for the Finlands A1XE repair try, hopefully it works.

As a OS4 beta-tester, I'd be glad to take a look at it. I can do a binary comparison to see what differences there are, and report that info if it looks like it might be useful. You can get my email address from here:
http://cshandley.co.uk/email

If at all possible, please ZIP or LHA the file first. If you download LHA from OS4Depot, then you can use *something* like the following to archive it from the Shell:

LHA a RAM:amigaboot.lha SYS:amigaboot_corrupt.of

@Kicko

You should have received a commercially pressed AmigaOS 4 Update 1.5 CD with your system.

Check the packaging

Other than that contact Amigakit.

@Kicko

You can use AmiDVD to make a bootable snapshot of your current Workbench partition.

Damb Strange...
amigaboot.of is protected from write and deletion on the 4.1.5 CD. The machines are built from that. So somehow its file attributes on your drive must have got changed.
It was specifically done this way to prevent the user from deleting it without having to change the attributes first.

CFE scans available drives for amigaboot.of then amigaboot.of will present you with a list bootable partitions with a kicklayout file in them, unless its using the quiet option set by an env in CFE

See the CFE guide

How have AmigaKit delivered your system. Is your sys: partiton FFS2 or SFS, have you got a boot: partition ?

Glad you got it sorted.

@ChrisH

I'll send the file in LHA to you over this weekend time permitting. Keep jumping around between what my wife wants to do this weekend and what I want to do on the X1000!

I have been able to register on Hyperion's site (I got the email last night) so I have downloaded the SDK and update2 to put on this weekend.

After reading your website you've inspired me to have a go at using portablE, now that I can get the SDK. I have never programmed in E, but after reading the example code you gave it should be interesting to have a go at it.

Thanks again for your help.
