Hans would need feedback from Acube or a Sam440ep owner as he does not have a Sam440ep.
ACube said that it works .
From experience with a Sam460ex the Radeon Rx cards RX550 or Rx560 are more likely to work than the Radeon HD Southern Islands cards .

OK but, what's holding them back from asking to test something or telling us if PEX 8111 is compatible?
Which RXs have been tested with SAM440? Or why the hell I have to buy ES to find out (like Brasco) that 6 graphic cards do not work ? Just 3 interesting questions, isn't it?

Once again, I will gladly buy ES as long as it works for me. Because so far we have a guarantee that it will not work.

Same issues with Sam460ex of ES to find out that many graphic cards do not work .
So I would use the work "tested" . Does not mean a different card of the same model will work. Has happened with Sam460ex.

I'm not really inclined to buy another one without knowing exactly what I'd get. Every instance of a PCI to PCIe adapter online (including the one I bought) is listed as PEX8112, so I'm not confident enough to spend another $20 for something that won't get here for a month.

It is still available on Amazon, too.

https://www.amazon.com/Bewinner-Conversion-Adapter-PXE8112-Chipset/dp/B07ZX9B36Y/ref=psdc_13983711_t3_B0037ECAM2

Maybe, for you it is faster to get one and probably easier to return if the adapter is not as described?
But costs twice as much, though...and looks exactly the same.

@Bradsco, Spectre660

From Hans website:

if you use a PCI-to-PCIe bridge card, get one with a PEX8112. The Radeon HD driver has code to optimise the settings of the PEX 8111 and 8112, but not other PCI-to-PCIe bridges. Plus, it supports blind-prefetching, which increases VRAM read access speed.

In the interest of 'science' I've ordered that card. It's difficult to spend that much since they're only $20 or so on aliexpress, and given that I already have one. Also I'd bet nobody who is selling them cares exactly which chip is on it. Still, I can return it if I have similar results.

Here's the one I've been using:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BBRLEJ6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've also got a $10 R7 240 showing up today.

Hurray for the brave man!
It is advertised as PEX 8111 / 8112.
Maybe you could send them a request to pack an adapter based on PEX8112?
Probably they do it randomly.
When you will get it?

Just a question for future reference :
Is the RX550 a 2GB or 4GB Radeon RX model ?

Yep, both systems are completely configured and everything connected while testing. I know that even if there's an issue with the video card, it's still possible to hear the startup chime once Workbench is loaded. I've got the debug kernel set in kicklayout so there should be serial output after the Radeon drivers but consistently the debug logs stop while the Radeon driver is starting up. The output consistently begins with some version of:

Quote:
RadeonHD (0): ERROR: AtomBIOS is stuck in a loop for more than 5 seconds. Aborting
RadeonHD (0): ERROR: AtomBIOS stuck executing C448 (len 321, WS 0, PS 4) @ 0x0072. Aborting.
RadeonHD.chip (0): ParseTable said: CD_INFINITE_LOOP_ENCOUNTERED

The two RX cards never get past the Sam's initial output, because it never sees the card.

Again, no serial output after that, so not much to go on. Even if the video cards weren't producing output until the Workbench came up, perhaps the board itself is preventing further progress because it can't find VGA.

I'm also fairly sure that this RX 550 card won't work anyway. The PCI bus only delivers 25 watts max, while the top end for PCIe is 75 watts. The RX 550 has no external power connector, so I doubt it would ever get enough juice to run.

It's 4GB. PowerColor RX 550

Luckily I can still return that too.

The R7 240 doesn't work either. Gets a large portion of the way through initialization and then stops after loading the microcode. When the new adapter shows up on Monday, I'm betting the same thing will occur. This isn't a problem with the cable, the adapter or any of the cards themselves not working. Nothing is happening to suggest anything other than the Sam or the Radeon driver to be the point of failure for all these cards.

@Bradsco

Once U-Boot recognises the cards then you can draw final conclusions .

Once the Radeon driver starts up it will give some debug output .

This is where I'm coming from. I'm not focused solely on the RX 550. What I'm saying is that every card other than an RX card is recognized by the Sam, and at some point while the Radeon driver is spewing forth tons of debug into, it simply stops.

For instance the last few lines while booting the R7 240:

Quote:

Nothing further after this. This is the stopping point for several of the cards.

@Bradsco

I dont think that the R7 240 is going to work with the current U-Boot versions of either the Sam460ex or Sam440ep. Expect 100% failure with this model card.

The infinite loop detection is something that Han reintroduced into the Radeon HD driver after similar tests of mine with a Radeon HD7750 failed on a Sam440ep-Flex about 5 years ago.

Quote:
RadeonHD (0): ERROR: AtomBIOS is stuck in a loop for more than 5 seconds. Aborting
RadeonHD (0): ERROR: AtomBIOS stuck executing C448 (len 321, WS 0, PS 4) @ 0x0072. Aborting.
RadeonHD.chip (0): ParseTable said: CD_INFINITE_LOOP_ENCOUNTERED

Conclusion was that there was an issue with U-Boot setting up the card correctly.
This would also apply for Sam460ex machines with most Radeon HD graphics cards with newer bios versions.

The Radeon RX Cards have a UEFI bios so things are are a little different with initialization results.

Hopefully Acube can improve U-Boot for both Sam460ex and Sam440ep even more .

It really looks like UBoot needs some changes to make RX visible while RadeonHD driver goes further but needs additional work too.
I'm pretty sure now, even if I finally get RadeonHD Lite/Full my HD7750 will not work.
ACube claims HD7750, some RXs work. Maybe they have a newer RadeonHD/RX driver?
Looks like HD 4xxx/5xxx/6xxx work with the current driver but all above that do not.
I will try to write some mails and ask for help, tomorrow.

I'm sure I said it at some point, but I'm in it for Warp 3D Nova to run on this thing. What I may not have mentioned is that I have a game I'd like to work on, and I'd rather test it on the lesser hardware between the Sam and X5000.

I bought the first adapter for this purpose, and it's been nearly five years since. It wasn't compatible then, so to see the UBoot update and an announcement saying 'hey this works now' only for it to be untrue, well, that's disappointing.

@Bradsco & @mr2

It has worked for some combination of adapters and Radeon RX550's for Acube.
They have no reason to misrepresent this .

Bradsco's combination is the most likely to work.
That is the incoming PEX8112 and the RX550 .
The released Radeon RX driver version should not be an issue.
The key is that the RX card is recognized for VGA output in U-Boot .

I did make an offer to gift mr2 the drivers via AMistore but he declined .

There would be a greater chance to eliminate any specific issues such as
possible issues with contacts on the actual PEX adapters or PCI slots if more
than 1 person was testing.

But they didn't answer your question nor mine, which graphic cards they tested?
I belive they are busy (a new batch of SAM460cr, a new shop). Maybe an adapter with a working GPU will appear in their shop?
But UBoot 1.3.1f was announced already as working with RadeonHD, then 1.3.1g. That's why I'm skeptical and took a safe way. I have bought the adapter only.
I asked AEon which email to use because I have a request. The email adress was given and I sent a message. No answer... Sure, they are busy, too (ES2.0, A1222)
I'm closer to make a final conclusion but want to wait a little more.
I feel we can't go further without their help.

I think adapters are OK (however based on PEX8111), GPUs are OK, PCIs are OK. I have tested every single one with R9250. I can see UBoot and PEX chip in Ranger.
I'm not saying there is no chance the fault is on our side but it looks less and less likely.

@Bradsco

Could you boot with R9250 and just the adapter, no GPU connected? Then try what will Ranger say...

Sure that works no problem, and Ranger shows it as the 8111 device that it is. Just tested that exact configuration for you.

For clarity, the adapter and cable work perfectly with an HD 6850. No Warp 3D Nova of course, but this is a big part of how I conclude what is and what isn't the problem.
