I voted for ArtEffects. Maybe ImageFX is more powerful, but I never had a manual, and was never able to understand it's wierd non-standard GUI. Where-as ArtEffects is easy to understand without a manual (I did receive a manual but never bothered to read it).

A program that is needed to run software that wont run natively is an emulator, I don't care if it's officially a net app.

AmiCygnix is not an emulator. It's a native X server. Programs compiled for AmiCygnix are native programs, they just use AmiCygnix for their GUI rather than Intuition.

That would exclude all 68k software that runs under OS4, which are much mroe "emulated" than AmiCygnix is.

@Chris_Y

As far as I'm concerned if I have to run a program that gives me a totally different system with it's own desktop, gui, "OS" and a unix style filepath etc. to run ported linux software like gimp, it's an emulator. When I run it I'm no longer in amigaland, there is nothing amiga about X11 stuff. you might just as well boot into linux and get far better speed as it's slow even on my X1000 and unusable on my sam flex(733).

@Severin

It's more akin to Wine, but less of an emulator than that is (as everything is compiled natively), and Wine even stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator.

@Severin

fair enough. we included it since a ton of folks use it regularly when they want to do any image editing. i prefer arteffect/photogenics + fxpaint myself, but there are folks that have amicygnix just to use GIMP.

is it slow on your X1000? when i used it on one of those at amiwest 2011, other than moving windows about, it felt as fast as a 'native' application. what mode are you running amicygnix in? are doing the full monty with desktop environment or the 'light' setup as recommended in amiga future?

Feature wise? GIMP light years ahead of the other options.
Most usable? Not GIMP due its speed under AmiCygnix.

I voted ArtEffect because for years it was my favorite graphic program on Amiga and I used it a lot under Amiga OS 4.0.. but now it not so usable under Amiga OS 4.1 and all this time i hoped it can be update to a new version for next generation amiga but so it wasn't.. Then I started using and learning GIMP but under Amiga OS is not so fast due to AmiCygnix..

@nubechecorre

out of curiosity, what problems are you having with arteffect under OS4.1? if you're seeing odd redraw artifacts, it could be compositing graphics. arteffect doesn't like them, so you'll need to turn GUI effects off before running. if you set your screen mode up correctly, everything works very well indeed and should look like this.

@nubechecorre

using gfx programs a lot especially on the pc i must admit gimp isnt much of a good package even if i have some sentiment for open source. inkspace may replace my old illustrator, but gimp will not replace anything at all. art effect was already much closer at photoshop type of workflow even if it lacked essential features and was still pretty clumsy in others. but one might have accustomed to it i suppose.

@eliyahu

Well, what to say..

I need alpha channel, and GIMP is only one that I know that support it, but its not like I wont use it on my AmigaONE-XE, when I have PC that can run it way faster.

@nubechecorre

ArtEffect works with AmigaOS 4.1 - it has bugs, of course, but it's still usable for a lot of stuff. Most (>80%) of my artowrks are done with ArtEffect.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Ahem, Photogenics, fxPaint, PerfectPaint and ArtEffect have alpha channel/masking options. Especially ArtEffect has some cool effect stuff for blending work.

@cha05e90

So does ImageFX (have an alpha channel). Although not included in this section SketchBlock has full alpha blending suppotr too. (check your PM sicky )

Since 2.8 version GIMP got single-window mode, to give Photoshop users the look and feel of the Photoshop workspace...

@Kicko

if i recall correctly there was talk -- like in the 2004-2005 timeframe -- about a native version of arteffect for OS4. apparently work had started, and there were even test builds shown, but the developer discovered the codebase was immensely difficult to work with. i doubt alinea have anyone working on it any more, which is a shame. i know i'd buy a copy, and pay a pretty penny for it as well.

i love arteffect. i just wish the performance was better.

@eliyahu

I believe it was being ported by Stefan Röbl, author of AmiDock. AFAIK he isn't involved with the Amiga any more.

I agree that the latest release of AmiCygnix on my X1000 is actually slower moving windows around than the previous version but once inside an app the program is very responsive indeed and feels native. I'm glad Edgar works on the X11 environment for OS4.1 as I'd get tired booting into Linux every time I needed to use Gimp.
