Spotted on the new products page today.

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=157

Interesting text.

"AmigaOne, AmigaOS and Boing Ball logo are trademarks of Amiga,Inc. as licensed from Hyperion Entertainment CVBA. All rights Reserved."

Well, the Boing Ball logo is evident from the accompanying photo - there's some sort of sticker on the top of the chip, which suggests these aren't Commodore or AT era ROMs. They might be licensed EPROMs. Would be interesting to know what version number they are, there's an outside chance they are marginally newer version of Kickstart.

@Rob

Nice to see Amigakit selling 3.1 disk sets & 3.1 ROMs (handier and more reliable than folk having to try and find them on eBay or download them from the net)...

The interest text is a tad confusing...

As it seems to say the Boing Ball trademark is owned by Amiga.inc but that it's licensed from Hyperion !!!

While the actual Trademark itself seems to be actually owned by Amiga.inc but abandoned by them on September 19th 2011 and is now marked as "dead"...

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=doc&state=4002:yx8ra5.4.1

I notice the disk are said to be "manufactured by Amiga International", does that mean they are very old stock manufactured a long time ago or are they brand new ones just recently manufactured...

These are definetly EPROMs. There is a grey line surrounding the whole chip, thats quite typical for EPROMs. The Kickstart version is 40.063, IIRC this was the latest Kickstart, distributed by AT.

40.63 as per Commodore era. Just wondering why they're stickered up with the boing ball logo and legal guff regarding Amiga Inc and Hyperion.
Makes me wonder if this is the result some new agreement between the 3 companies.

The 2009 settlemeent between Hyperion and "the Amiga parties" is sufficient to make these kind of deals possible. In said settlement, AInc hands pretty much all rights regarding AmigaOS 3.1 over to Hyperion - including the right to hand out licenses to third parties.

As for the BoingBall: No, it's no longer a registered trademark (in the US, it's still registered elsewhere), but a trademark doesn't have to be registered to be valid. And Hyperion have a license (including the right to sub-license) for the BoingBall. Problem is, afaict: Hyperion's license for the BoingBall is only valid for OS4 related products:

"Solely for the purpose of marketing, distributing and making available AmigaOS 4 and any hardware required or desired to operate AmigaOS 4, the Amiga parties grant Hyperion [...] a non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide and royalty-free, transferable right and license to use the 'Boing Ball' logo mark"

(settlement agreement, section "Grant", paragraph c)

The way I read this, Hyperion's license for the BoingBall does not cover sticking it on 3.1 ROMs.

Hmmm... seems the link I provided has a time limit on it...

Oh well here's a screen grab of the page that show the BoingBall Trademark Logo is has been "dead" since September 2011 (can't find anywhere else it has been re-registered since)...

Now that Hyperion is taking a cut of the sale of each Kickstart ROM, when do we get an updated Kickstart 3.2 ROM?

Sounds to me like it does, because:

On Classic the 3.1 kickstart is required to run OS4 as it needs to load 3.1 before it can load 4.x.

I was going to say that... But I assumed that was a known solution and just wasn't deemed Amiga enough. :D

@KimmoK

What phases? Jason has a few sets on his desk. :P The main reason they can't be sold right now is the cdrom handler needs to be replaced with a commercial friendly one.

PS. Speaking of which he's supposed to be sending me one for my A2000. :)

I do not understand that either... almost 1000 games and many applications are already working with the rom replacements and work is going on. There there is your "AmigaBios"

You don't need to have 3.1, 3.0 is completely sufficient.

But that's not relevant here anyway: Follow the link in the first posting, and you'll see that the ROMs in question are for A500/200 - definitely not OS4 related.

@Rob

Seems like a typo on the sticker, it says v40.063, the extra zero shouldn't be
there, as far as I remember. v40.63 is the correct naming.

Perhaps this can pave the way for a real Kickstart 4.x ROM?

Mind you, the amount of updates would likely deem that impractical, even if you only stick the minimum required to boot in there.

@terminills & @Olafs25

I thought more is needed before ROMs/eproms (the HW) can be made.

Reimplemented kickstart could pave the way for faster AOS4 booting on classic Amigas, I imagine.
And for example I could replace A4000 ROM with something that does not need patching + rebooting before 3.9 can boot on 060.
