Don't take this the wrong way, but saying that "I'm only going to produce X copies and they are going to cost Y GBP because I'm only going to produce X copies" (classic Catch-22) is the main problem in the Amiga market today, really.

I won't as the Amiga market is what it is, it's the nature of the beast... That is why the X500 Plus is opened to everyone. It's very versatile, you can put whatever motherboard you like inside. If I had designed it just for the SAM for example, it'd have looked different.

Producing the x amount (in this case 50) is a forced factor upon me. I don't choose it. What does that mean? The minimum is 50 pieces to proceed. If I made 100 or 150 they would cost a more to produce, at least at the beginning. Do we have 100 orders? Do I have the required amount of money to pay for 100 myself...no.

I have paid, until this week, for development. Production comes from the customers. The people who have paid for one are paying for the production of the 50 cases. I'll share part of the cost of producing it IF we don't reach 50, (possibly via kickstarter) or cancel the project and move on.

If we had 100 people willing to pay for 100 we would have to pay for the production of 100 cases. This would of course lower the overall price of it by a small amount.

We are talking of initial cost.

Also setting the amount to 50 makes it easier for me as I'll only have to assemble 50. Imagine the case into its component parts, this is what happens:

The materials (150kg circa plastic, 120kgcirca aluminium, 60 kg circa steel is ordered), then cut and machined, then the aluminium gets powder coated. They send the parts to me.

I get the parts. I put the case together:

2 plastic sides
1 plastic top
1 LED window
1 LED window holder
2 LED holders
1 aluminium part (L shaped - rear and base)

In the meantime I have ordered the rest of the parts; LEDs, cables, switches, keyboards, screws, rubber feet, washers, nuts, glue, fans etc...etc...

I put them inside the case, glue the lot together then test the case and despatch it.

It's not like getting a bag of plastic dust, chucking it into a machine which then spits them out nicely shaped (injection moulding) ready to be shipped. It's a handcrafetd product.

I am more than happy to check how much for 100 but only if we have 100, can you see the risk? Order 100 and sell 40...

Thank you.

The key caps are fairly small so it maybe possible to have custom copies made fairly cheaply by a 3D printing service.

Buy what from almost anywhere? The X500+ ? Isn't this a custom designed case?

Oh.

I wonder how many cases there are for the AmigaOS and MorphOS hardware? I am guessing not very many. Until release of AmigaOne 500 and AmigaOne X1000 (and ports to ancient Mac) I could only find hardware. no mention on wikipedia. and danwood / techguruuk was demonstrating in 2009 of an AmigaOS compatible inside a Commodore Gaming case. (with a Mac Keyboard because of )

If there are is more hardware than cases available, with this AmigaOne X500 + case perhaps you will be sold out quickly and end up making more at less expense.

Why not just post it onto Kickstarter? Would it not qualify?

I noticed you have not posted a link to a website. Would an online store help get more sales? I would offer you to do this on my website for free but I don't know how quickly I would set up a store page.

Yes and the keyboard is a generic USB, chiclet keyboard that you can buy almost anywhere.

It might go live this week.

Not sure but who has the time to set one up?
Thank you for the offer anyway...

Anyone considering to try to build MosMini inside this case?

Someone told me that a mac mini or efika should fit, I've personally not tried it.

@TheDaddy

You have to replace DVD-RW drive if you install Mac Mini or Efika to that case (if you want to use it).

Mac Mini is but Efika takes a USB only (and almost nobody is using an optical drive with it).

Cool. IDE SATA slim adapters are available.
Thanks.

@TheDaddy

Efika has an IDE connector, but you need to attach devices directly to the connector (i.e. w/o cables albeit the specs allow 10cm cable IIRC).

OK, misunderstandings removed. Unfortunately I lost a couple of "child" replies to some deleted posts which I wanted to keep. Sorry guys.

I don't have a microA1 so I can't say for sure BUT it's a mini-itx board so it should fit.

If someone can let me know the dimensions (the height is the important one) I'll be more than happy to check it out. Being mini-itx the microA1 should be 170x170mm...but what about the height?

I think yes, previously I owned a MicroA1 and it's a normal mini itx motherboard.

Check the image on this site

That's great! From that picture the heat sink is even lower than the one on my gigabyte board with the intel i3 x2 @ 2.5GHz.

So as we stand the case supports:

the microA1*
the efika*
the mac mini*

Tested

the fpgaarcade Replay
x86 mini-itx and flex-atx boards
SAM440
SAM440 flex
SAM460

*not tested yet

not too bad for an "amateur" designer working in his garage...
