@Rob

Why would I do that, Black Lab Linux is working rather well for us.

I refer you to this post. You then post, within the time frame, a wholly underwhelming link that goes to a product that has nothing to do with the Amiga communities. Which is exactly like how CUSA ran their little ad compaigns.

So unless I am missing the point on your little media centre project then I am still unsure on how this relates to the Amiga communities.

Very simple, I have been asked to and we also have a corporate account here as well. I could see your little rant if it was given front page access, but it was posted to the back and so if you are interested in what I do, great if not who cares, just move on.

I like how you're mistaking a observation for a rant. I do have marginal interest, as I do with all linux varients. But your big news was underwhelming. Also considering the fact you posted this in the CUSA final thread i found it quite apt that it reflected some of their own anouncments.

First, one obvious difference between the two which does not affect your statement:

No Commodore or Amiga License ever announced.

Wild guess. To fill a hole regarding current shortcomings regarding Amiga and A/V performance?

I do agree to CritAnime... there is no real connection to Amiga, at least not more than Kubuntu+FS-UAE or Windows+AmigaForever

Roberto had promised a lot with long lists of software he would port to AmigaOS, PPC version of his distribution, one developer who would "soon" directly contact the community and work together (if I recall all correctly). I judge people if they do what they say, politicans always promise and do not keep it like everyone know but from businessman I expect something different.

And there are already alternatives for PPC available like a Linux distribution for X1000 and the SAMs and there will certainly be more alternatives in future based on Aros that are certainly more "amiga related" than a pure Linux distribution so competition is growing. Or does Roberto fear competition?

I would guess because not all? ended up with Amibyte.

Having done a quick whois on the domain it is registered to a Sean Donohue. He is the director and lead engineer for a new company called My Retro Computer LTD here in the UK. There is also a Anne Heelan which shows up as a secetery for the company. Which is interesting as there is also a Heelan accountants on the exact same address (http://heelanassociates.co.uk/).

Whats intersting is this from the website:

Quote:
Starting with the famous Commodore 64 & Vic 20 we aim to expand the range to include the Amiga, Atari and spectrum ranges. Whether you are a hardened 'Modder' or someone who just wants a complete system we can accommodate you.

Interesting indeed.

http://www.companieslist.co.uk/09028017-my-retro-computer-ltd#documents

If that read right they have £100 at start of company.

@CritAnime

Thanks for the additional info.

The part about "starting with" and later adding the others makes sense if this company purchased the molds from the family.

I don't see any statements of fact, as of yet, that indicate C=Holdings B.V. is involved.

If you find anything about licensing, please post. Otherwise for now I have to conclude this is solely about the existing molds and further custom cases.
I'll admit there is a chance they might start from scratch, but it seems highly unlikely given the work was already done.

An obvious question might be whether this is someone with a C= and/or Amiga connection.

Sean Donohue mentioned

Possible?

Dunno. I have had a random stab in the dark at possible email addresses and hopefully I will hear back from one. I am curious myself as to the connection and what the overall plan is. After all it can't be any worse than some of the other attempts with the name.

Just as I think it would be reinventing the wheel to design from scratch and therefore a possibility that he bought the molds...
I also doubt someone launches into this endeavor (including such a purchase of the molds) without access to the sales figures.

In other words, if he has not spoken to and/or dealt with CommodoreUSA, I would be surprised.

Well I haven't had a delivery error on one of the mail address I tried. So hopefully I will get some sort of reply. I agree that it seems unlikely that he would have jumped into this without some involvement along the lines with CUSA, maybe even as far as looking into that Custom Configuration thing they tried to sell. If he hasn’t bought the moulding equipment and is relying on old stock then it will be a short lived thing.

Another thing to consider is someone formerly attached to CUSA now making the cases. It will be interesting to find out.

The word "modding" rings a bell too despite the scant amount of text we have to go by.

There was always a distinction drawn between selling a system (branded) vs selling just the cases and telling purchasers they could put what they wanted IN those cases. I'm sure you recall that.

Something new on this...

CommodoreUSA is back

Seems that if the company is doing licensing that means it didn't fold up shop like prior posters claimed, no?

Then again, I realize no one trusts any news anymore regardless of the source, so...

There is trust, taking things with a pinch of salt then needing a full bag of salt. With lots of things I hover between pinch of salt and needing a bag. And his stuff always falls within the needing a bag of salt.

This made me laugh.

First of all numb-nuts, its a goddamn company from the UK. It is owned by Sean Donohue. I obviously being from the US, North Carolina to be exact, do not live in the UK. Well these are the same people that claim that "Amiga is the best OS in the world and that their 30 year old OS beats Windows, Mac and Linux." Also, the same group that thinks the $5,000.00 USD, underpowered AmigaNG computers they buy is a SUPERCOMPUTER. With a crew that delusional do I really expect them to master a MAP? Of course not.

He really knows how to throw the teddy out of the pram doesn't he. :)

Well, it depends on how accurate the sales figures were that they were given to look at. In my opinion, one of the reasons CUSA lied through their teeth with regards to "Partnerships", "High Street Distribution Deals", "Factories In China", etc was to mislead potential "investors" into believing that the company was much, much, much larger than it was. I seriously doubt the C64x was shipped in any meaningful quantities and I hope that this UK company hasn't fallen for a load of "creative accounting".

Then again, if they got the molds cheap enough then perhaps there is a financially viable market for that case. Personally, while the breadbox C64 holds a special place in my heart, I'd rather have a C128 type case with a numeric keypad.

It will be interesting to see if a small company can make it by honestly selling retro PC cases (with options for installing an OS with emulation software), without creating a mountain of lies and trying to insist that Linux is AmigaOS.

Please keep in mind that sale of the molds was just my supposition as to what had transpired.

If it's true they were leased, as another post indicated, then that's surely a different story when it comes to an amount. In that case there might be an upfront payment in addition to leasing costs and less risk for the licensee, imo.

Good point. From a personal point of view, in a market such as this. I'd prefer a lease and something along the lines of "I'll pay you $x for every unit I sell".

Meanwhile, talking of retro computers, I just found this:

Thanks for the link. Very interesting. 5? of them.

Maybe people on the AW front page would be interested in reading about this.
