Currently the owner of a sam440flex here... I count AmigaOSv4, MorphOS and AROS as the "Children" of AmigaOSv3.x and earlier... so I still think *all* members of the family are somewhat relevant to this question.
For day to day computing and using TimberWolf(at least 7 tabs without issues except when closing...), AmIRC(this seems to be the primary culprit of system crashes care of TextEditor.mcc... I need to try debugging this further beyond capturing crashlogs aplenty), BitCoin trading (randomly), Software Development(Whenever I get the chance to type a little bit of code... not everything gets committed to svn no googles cloud ;), Listening to music (Tunenet or commandline players), Watching my video media collection (graphics performance is so-so here).
Currently messing around with Japanese Input and trying to properly present UTF8 for Applications who can have the option c/o perception...
I'm also trying to write a couple of Emulators (very slowly and in small steps)...
Having a couple of *large* HDDs in the machine seriously helps for the majority of tasks... as is having space for a reasonably sized swap partition.
I'm also awaiting an updated OS component relative to the Japanese Keyboard sent to S.Solie (postage from my own pocket... so meh to the naysayers...)
I have tried Linux (several years sys admin) and was trained with Windows... and my opinion about them both is... "meh"... Linux is too technical for everyday usage... Mac is just treating me like "there there, heres a baby rattle... go play" and Windows is no better than mac most of the time.
AmigaOS has always been the most *open* commercial offering retaining a simplicity for the OS layout and this is pervasive...
Openly simple but also powerfully capable from the choices made by various component authors towards a holistic system design.
I know there is a few things I still can't do myself properly (device drivers and filesystems primarily) but I am still open-minded to learn if I can document out a design as an abstraction to make a sensible driver or filesystem.
I'll end my book of an answer there, if anyone has any questions about what I am doing... ask me directly... anything "negative" or "go away" can go back to the bitbucket of "duh, I'm stupid!", I currently hold the opinion there is no one in this branched community who is accurately perceivable that way currently.
please don't prove me wrong... (I'll just TPB style publish the more excessive detractions with or without redaction and let the community see how excessive some of the "hate mail" gets... and this is what "newbies" get to see too...sigh)

For me: Amiga = personal computer Windows = Impersonal computer Mac = Obnoxiously condescending personal computer Linux = boring, albeit very useful to know, personal computer
Putting aside hardware tinkering as a use, for me the enjoyment of Amiga came with building ones own personal computer system - not just changing backgrounds, icons, themes, palettes and fonts etc but creating how the sytem operated as a whole, how applications interreacted, what went where and knowing why. Having an operating system whose operation you understand and control, not one where computer seizures happen seemingly at random followed by a full splash-screen of "Adobe updates are available!" as default behaviour.
These aspects have been built upon and expanded, and all Amiga compatible systems (AROS, AmigaOS,, MorphOS) seem to have retained this philosophy of keeping the user in control. That is also reflected in the user interface, which is legendary for its responsiveness to user input, as opposed to the "you'll just have to wait a minute, I'm busy" approach of other OSes (I'm looking at you Mac colourwheel).
This is all my own experience of course, and I recognise that different people have different tastes. Most people want everything done for them, I'm just a control freak and prefer to do as much as possible myself.
And whoever at MS are responsible for a) the Office Assistant; b) the "Troubleshoot" button deserve priority tickets for the B-Ark. Both are utterly useless resource-hogging abominations of feeble-minded obviousness which have no analogue in the Amiga world. _________________ Troll - n., A disenfranchised former potential customer who remains interested enough to stay informed and express critical opinions. opp., the vast majority who voted silently with their feet. |

| At the moment, mainly:
- Web browsing (but I still use Linux/FireFox for some critical sessions like PC Banking) - Mail - ARexx scripting - Browsing/sorting/updating data from my old A4000 - Fine tunning my new A1 X1000
Next, I plan to buy Hollywood. Last edited by AmigaPhil on 10-Sep-2013 at 07:49 PM. Last edited by AmigaPhil on 10-Sep-2013 at 07:49 PM.

I use my real Amigas and FS-UAE for hobby programming for pleasure. Coding for the sake of coding, no deadlines, no fixed goals and no PHB breathing down my neck! :)
I use my PowerBook G4 for the same plus web browsing with Odyssey, AmIRC, ssh to my off site Linux server, mod playing and general tweaking the OS to fit my workflow.
No other OS gives me the same feeling of control than Amiga OS/MorphOS/AROS. Not even my highly tweaked KDE/Linux laptop. |

AFAIK, Hollywood 5.3 was supposed to be available to new customers at a later time. If this does not happen, am I not be able to buy an older version and upgrade ?

"No other OS gives me the same feeling of control than Amiga OS/MorphOS/AROS."
+1
I've found out (after I had my 30'th birthday) that I'm too old to learn to master Linux 100% like I did with AmigaOS3.x. Now I'm above 40 and Linux is not any easier. (+64bit linux does not seem to work yet (at least every app in linux mint kde 64bit seems broken)). +they seem to radically change linux internals faster than I manage to learn. OSX does things it's way, not my way. Windows is just insanely sh*tty os to use for anything.
So, I prefer familiar Amiga OS (and it's derivates). Simple, working, fast, cool, ....
Even if I need some win/linux/whatever application I would love to use it from Amiga environment (by using RDesktop or VNC or emulation) rather than use it natively under some ugly OS.. Wow, I just realized this thread is from September 2013. I'm surprised I missed it back then.
Anyways, I use my Amigas for fun. I tinker with ARexx, TVpaint, PPaint, Final Writer 97, surf the net, and play a few old favourite games.
I have installed several web browsers, AWeb, IBrowse, NetSurf, Odyssey Web Browser, Origyn Web Browser (OWB), TimberWolf.

| Many years ago I used my Amiga for everything that I could, but as PCs, laptops, smartphones took over I was forced to use my A1200 secondarily.
One thing I used my Amiga for exclusively was animation, which I still do! After years of de-motivation due to severe mental health issues I did less and less, but eventually picked up and decided to create a Youtube channel to upload all my old work to, plus a recent one.
The animation is drawn on Deluxe Paint 5, sometimes digitised with the FG24 digitiser (successor to the ProGrab,) then audio and timing is added with AnimatED. _________________ SEX SUX

| Last time I used Amiga for "serious work" was to create 2018 Christmas and New Year greetings card for my father: PPaint (68k) for basic brushes and GIMP (OS4) for layered composition is an ideal combination. |

It's great that you still use the Amiga for ALL parts of your animation. I've got used to using iMovie for timing and audio though I used to use Scala to do the same job on the Amiga which was a great program._________________ "Art challenges technology. I use my A4000 for some gaming and backing up of my Amiga files. It has most of my floppy collection from when I lived off floppies. But with a CyberStorm 060 is less useful for gaming as A500 games don' t tend to work even with WHDLoad patches.
I use my X1000 for internet use like some browsing and doing email. I play some games on it from time to time. The rest I would spend on some programming project, usually C or E and sometimes AmigaDOS scripting. I could be working on some port otherwise it would be my own project. |
