So do I. I think it's outrageous that a $3500 computer only has a minimal (Rx/Tx) serial port like my X1000. Oh, well.

@Signal

Well, I need serial ports since some of my retro projects don't have USB capability.
And serial also makes a good debugging port.

Further, one 6809/6309 board I have uses a Phillips quad UART (you would not believe how much better that is than the old 6850/6551).

The P50X0 has serial ports, but even on systems that don't support RS-232, I can add it or convert USB ports.

What I haven't used in several years is a parallel interface.

Although for hacking and simple control projects they still have some uses.

@Amigo1

I think I have a few printers with that interface, but most of my print out go to a networked HP M401.
The biggest problem I had with parallel was the limited length the cables would run.

Then again, USB doesn't like long cables either.

Which device for sale today accepts RS-232? Only POS receipt printers as I know of. Unusual or old hobby device maybe but just get USB or BT to serial converter.

both PowerProgress (in development) notebook and Raptor BlackBird and Talos II have been shown at

https://insidehpc.com/2020/01/video-open-and-high-performance-computing/

Opportunities that Amiga companies should take advantages of?

I'm sure that IBM may be happy to push forward the development of these platform...

@AmeegaGuy

serial port is popular debug port. Even if not for use to connect to devices commercially, it is a useful thing for hardware and firmware developers. T4240 and T2080 development systems are both default configured to be accessed from the serial port, then you can move up to other interfaces from there...

Serial is cheaper than most jtag kits, and easier to get into than jtag.

Most SoC have multiple serial ports built-in. Many other things have serial over USB built-in, like Arduinos, which show up on PC as COM ports for use with a serial terminal program.

Xbee boards connect to Arduino base using a serial port. Think embedded. You as a desktop computer user may not care. Embedded developers do very much.

@AmigaBlitter

Nice. I heard about the MicroWatt project before (https://github.com/antonblanchard/microwatt) very interesting.

I like the ideas here too: https://www.powerpc-notebook.org/en/

They are 60 + % towards their goal.

Raspberry Pi can also show up as serial port or ethernet device when plugged into USB. The serial device is supported by Poseidon on AmigaOS, and the ethernet connection is in principle supported by Poseidon on AROS, but I haven’t tried it yet.

Of part 1A. Then they have to collect money for rest of project.

Quote:

1A. PCB Project [19.000 euro]
1B. Fast SI bus simulations [5.000 euro]; ( What is SI bus simulation )
2. Production and delivery of five working prototypes [10.500 euro];
3. Hardware testing using software provided by the manufacturer (ACube) [14.000 euro];
4. Pre-certification and CE certification [12.500 euro].

In Amiga tradition parts will be EoL before project is done.

I take it you've never heard of the Amiga? A computer that in 1985 had multitasking and HAM 8 colour when its competitors were 8 colour or black and white?

Anything is possible. The human will to innovate, develop and build will always survive.

Yup, got one in 1986. Difference between this project and Amiga in 1985 is that Amiga wasn't ~15 years behind in performance of it much cheaper competitors.

Innovation is the reason why this project was hopelessly out of date even when it started.

What's a Microwatt? Never heard of that PowerPC model. It needs to do better than 100Mhz to even just beat the LCD 160Mhz BlizzardPPC.

I think it was HAM 6. 2 bits control + 4 bits colour. 6 planes. HAM 8 would be AGA. 2 bits control + 6 bits colour. 8 planes.

They need to call their VHDL core something

Doable, it's just that price of FPGA needed will make it pointless considering that you can get 1.4Ghz T1020 for ~$80 which would beat it anyway.
