@KimmoK

Multiple modules of dual processor can be added

/Dream on

Imagine a "desktopised" Amigaone version of this that you can add more modules to gain power when you need it (or your money permits it) more or lees like Amiga accelerators (only that in this case all cpus are enabled)

/Dream off

@OlafS25

Well, the so called G5 was a reduced POWER4, so why not?

Is Open Power a future hardware architecture for Amiga? (AmigaOS, MorphOS, AROS, etc.?)

It's nice to see how they'll achieve that...

It might be only for AmigaOS, because AROS is focused on x86 (x64 will be the next "mainstream" architecture), and MorphOS future seems to be bounded to x64.

@cdimauro

Is MorphOS going x64 official?

@Birbo: not yet officially, but some devs already talked about porting it to x64 as the next "big thing to do".

@cdimauro

Hmmmmm... I wonder if MorphOS going x86 64bit would maybe force the hand of Hyperion to port AmigaOS 4 over, too. Maybe call it AmigaOS 5?

@AmigaBlitter,

Power 8 looks to support FPGA's. I wonder what you could use that for?

I don't think that AmigaOS will ever be ported to some other architecture, included the 64-bit PowerPC.

AmigaOS is the only post-Amiga o.s. which is destined to stick with 32-bit PowerPCs (even if PowerPC processor supports the 64-bit mode/architecture), because of the lack of resources to rewrite what's needed for this big step.

Who will use it?

And, more important, who will use a POWER8 for a "desktop" market segment?

Lack of resources? I thought this is problem of all Amiga-like OSs...

If there are people willing to buy 3000 USD computers using Pentium D performance class CPUs, power hungry POWER8 would certainly find market in our community.

@NomadOfNorad

I doubt it. What is MorphOS to Hyperion? Also AmigaOS 5 is an Amiga, Inc invention. At least as fat as I know. And wasn't to be an AmigaOS at all really.

@Hypex

In 2000, what we call today AmigaDE was named "AmigaOS" in marketing material and announcements. DE based OS was later postponed, parts of this technology to be gradually integrated in to 4.x with OS5 as final goal...

AROS has already a 64-bit flavor. MorphOS will go for x64.

@AmigaBlitter

I wish there were more pcie ports on the b4860 line. Could be cool to have e6500 multicolored combined with multi dsp cores. But it lacks pcie connectivity to be used as a computer as we would, rather than communications and cell towers it's intended for.
