Hi all,

Was wondering what type of Amigaish laptop people were using and the software they are using on it.

Really quite a selfish question really as I'd like to use Hollywood and Designer on a laptop (Not Windows).

I have a Windows laptop with Amiga Forever and Hollywood and Designer installed, however when I try to run a Designer app I've been working on it either freezes or runs very slow, both look the same so unsure which.

I have an iBook 12" with the aforementioned Hollywood and Designer again installed without any problems and the same Designer app runs flawlessly on this however the iBook is rather bulky and poorly put back together after a few hardware modification.

So was think of installing a distro of Aros/Icaros/AspireOS on my Samsung NC10 nice and light and well built, however only a 10" display.

So I'd like a well made, decent size laptop (14" or bigger I think) and decent specs, what are the options?

How about a Sam440 in a laptop chassis, lol, sorry wrong thread.

A PowerBook (or iBook) running MorphOS I guess.

AspireOS on my netbook. Head over to their website to make sure whatever net/notebook you want to use is supported so you can have full 3d and sound support.

@klx300r

Acer Aspire 150 netbook is my Amiga laptop fix, I never tried hollywood on, and mainly just play on a few basic games and try out aros on it, but its always been good enough to handle what I've thrown at it.

@IntuitionAmiga

Just realised one of my old laptops is a ACER Aspire 5742 and that should, in theory, do for installing AROS or my Samsung NC10.

However the Acer is a 15.4" screen and the Samsung has a 10" screen, I'd like a happy medium like a 13" or 14" screen, what are my options?

Finally got Icaros 2.2.4 running on my Samsung NC10 and it's a pretty cool toy, no idea how to get online though.

I have a few other laptops to try as listed on https://blitterwolf.blogspot.com/2018/11/getting-aros-up-and-running-part-1.html

On my NC10 I have used wireless manager to find my router and entered the password and hit connect but nothing seems to happen

I was expecting a new requester to open and say restart for setting to take affect or just for the password box to close, none of this and after a restart anyway still no connection.

The NC10 is not over powerful but for my first foray into AROS I find it is a good choice.

Can anyone assist with my connection woes?

After connecting via Wirelessmanager can you ping the router? If you can, at least you know AROS has connected with it.

To enable the connection with the router to survive reboot you need to edit network prefs. I find entering manual values for the gateway and DNS addresses (IPv4 configuration page) and for the laptop's IP address (by double clicking on the laptop's entry in the lister on the IPv4 tab) but this may take a bit of experimentation of manual vs automatic to find what works best with your router.

Also on the IPv4 tab you can choose to check the 'Start network during system boot' button or to start it manually you can type in 'wirelessmanager xxx.devive', where 'xxx' is the device driver you are using (I'm guessing atheros5000.device).

Back in netwrok prefs, on the Wireless Networks page add the details for the network you are connecting to, including the type of encryption and passphrase.

Cheers,
Nigel.

You'll need to know its IP address - that shold be somewhere in the literature that comes with it. Probably something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. To ping it, open a shell and type:

ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is its IP address)

If you are connecting with the router you should see some feedback on how may milliseconds it took to send the 'ping' to it and receive a reply.

Cheers,
Nigel.

@ntromans

I typed in Ping 192.168.X.X

which returned PING 192.168.X.X (192.168.X.X): 56 data bytes

Could this mean I have a connection?

This one is easy.

Got to ebay and search for DELL latitiude D520.
It is a beautiful laptop. You would need to replace the wi-fi card, but that is easy.
Alternative is to use some android cell phone for networking.

I'm afraid it means there is currently no connection, most probably because the correct driver isn't set for your network card. I presume you are currently trying to use the internal miniPCI card? If so, it will only work if is an Atheros card. Please load up network prefs and on the IPv4 tab edit (or add if it currently doesn't exist) your net0 entry to be for the Atheros5000.device, save this and then try the ping again. Also, do double check the IP addresses in network prefs to make sure they are sensible.

The other thing you could do is load up PCITool from Tools and see if you can spot the entry for the network card. As noted, if it's not an Atheros there will not be a driver for it. If that is the case, there are a couple of options. You could source an Atheros card from say e-bay (although check the compatability here), open up the netbook and fit it, but the problem there is that even with a compatable card for some machines the BIOS will not configure it so it can't be used. The alternative is to have an external WiFi dongle - I use a Netgear WG111v3 (note exact model number) and it works really well.

Cheers,
Nigel.

@all

Forget the online problem for now.

I've tried Icaros on a couple of machines now, both pretty decent, thought I'd try it on a newer machine with a higher resolution, faster processor and larger hard drive.

Install went fine but only showing HD as 8GB, tried doing it as two partitions but also totalled 8GB. The HD is 1TB could this be too big for AROS to cope with?

I'm eager to get this machine working as it's not on the compatibility list and would be nice to add.

It has nothing to do with Icaros, but the Amiga file system.
The system partition has to use smart file system or fast file system.
For work partition you could use other files system like ntfs. There you
would not have that limit. The problem is that it is not that easy to set up.
Maybe in future we could have a choise for other partitions as 128GB is more than plenty for
some Amiga system partition. I would say 1GB is plenty for any amiga system
partition.
I know there been some other files systems for Amiga not ported to AROS.
I think there is a sfs3 where the limit is higher.
All the same. I understand that disks these days often are big, but does not have
that much use in an Amiga or amiga like OS.
I use 64GB SSD and that is plenty!

Was some suggestions for tested and fully supported by AROS Core i5 + nvidia laptop models, but really, what's the point? No-one ever listens, it'll get ignored and crap like Asus Aspire of Dell Latitudes, which are actually a curse to the AROS community, with be suggested, even though you can buy muuuuch better, much faster, fully supported models with Nvidia gfx for similar money.

Not a grumble, it's just the way things are.

It's quite difficult to listen to you, if your messages last 30 minutes and then you delete them.

By the way, I am interested in a Core i5 + nvidia laptop (I have to get one for a friend of mine), but unluckily I don't know what are the tested ones.

@paolone

haha, exactly Paolo.

Fishy always brags about those laptops, but we never got a model number from him.
The same crap all over again. AROS got buggy Nvidia drivers. Supported Nvidia chips are for quite old laptops, where they generated a lot of heat, and in most cases damaged today.

If some day we got updated MESA with nouveau drivers, we could use some real new laptops that are realy powerfull. Not only that but also with much more power friendly and much more durable Nvidia GPUs. There was something they did with the soldering some years ago that makes them much more durable in mobile platforms.
