@deadwood

I'm guessing the monthly highlights on the AROS page will become very interesting :)

@paolone

Several years ago I predicted that AROS would become more advanced and robust than OS4 and now I see that it's happening. OS4 development stagnated years ago and aside from the recent improvement in GPU support any changes in OS4 seemed to be just quick bug fixes or band-aid patches to get it working on ever more rare PPC cpu's. Even USB support on OS4 is still flaky at best. Stating the above over at Amiga.org would get me banned again and even here I'll probably be flamed at best, but hey, it's nice to see AROS moving along!

So true.

It is a few realy dedicated AROS developers that have kept the dream alive and just maybe in the future it will gain more interest and find a nice userbase.

i guess you can say that. there are some examples, but on the other hand there are social factors that influence that the project changes hands, people join, retire, staff is fluctuating according to peristaltiscs of personal phases of motivation and disappointment while the work stalls and then gets picked up at full throttle. the important thing is, the source is open and the opportunity is there. and that the framework actually forces people of different, almost mutualy exclusive abilities, interests, mindsets and concepts to cooperate.

I am still sitting on the river bank. At this precise moment what we see is proof of concept activating various cores of a CPU...

I want to see how it will be implemented.

I hope they will dedicate a single core to old software executing only, and let the other cores free to perform atomic operations on new software (i.e. new software tasks splitting into threads any of them running contemporarly in various cores)...

yes, its still under development, but these days the pace is very high:
https://trac.aros.org/trac/timeline

id prefer to see that much of motivation on 68k front, but its cool to see nevertheless.

im not sure of the details. i think its a moving target, but for now the os and legacy apps is going to sit on the initial core for what i know.

@wawa

It will good also that any legacy software could be just assigned as dedicated, to the first core that is found free... And Core will remain assigned to that task, until its execution is ended/stopped/aborted.

Questions etc:
-Do 32bit x86 AROS apps run on 64bit AROS?
-Legacy SW (compiled to 64bit?) will run (only?) on core0?
-AROS x64-SMP compiled apps can use all/any cores?
-Can one allocate some core for some task/process?
-Can one define group of cores for some tasks/processes?
-Is there any experimental memory-protected AROS branch?

((IMO: any form of multi-core support is better than having none at all.))

@Raffaele

keep in mind that aros is not held back with backwards compatibility restrictions, except on 68k, especially that most software for it is open source and available for recompilation.

the multiprocessing x64 build is aros abi v1, while the most common aros platform as of today is x86 abi v0. thats what the distributions are available for. it is expactable, that the switch to x64 smp as default will happen along the transition from abi v0 to abi v1.

i think its a bitt too much of control. this has to be taken care of by the system, not by the user or application programmer.

@KimmoK

Please note any of above can change at any time :)

Quote:
-Do 32bit x86 AROS apps run on 64bit AROS?

No and probably never will. They would, just as it is in case of e.g. WoW64, need a full set of 32bit compatibility libraries, so the effort is not even worth trying.

Quote:
-Legacy SW (compiled to 64bit?) will run (only?) on core0?

Probably, although most likely legacy will need to be recompiled anyway (since size of some structures used in system and in software has changed)

Quote:

Most likely

Quote:
-Can one allocate some core for some task/process?

When creating new task one can attribute it to selected CPU or group of CPUs using CPUAffinity bitmap.

Quote:
-Is there any experimental memory-protected AROS branch?

No, AROS protects only some critical parts using MMU, emulates SysBase at absolute address 4 (on some targets) or e.g. puts kernel at the top of address space on sam440/efika/arm, but this is definitely not MP.

I said it long ago and got laughed off: Aros is to AmigaOS what Mac Os X has been to Mac System 9:

- breaks free of legacy
- keeps the same UI feeling and OS defining features of its predecessor
- runs legacy software through virtual subsystems (uae = rosetta stone)
- opens up to new hardware architectures

Maybe now it's a little less laughable as a comparison? :)
Impressive work, never give up!

@resle

it isnt exactly precize:

Quote:
- breaks free of legacy

on amiga (68k) it actually doesnt. on the contrary it preserves the compatibility instead.

Quote:

the question is to whom it was laughable in first place.

@resle

But that legacy of Mac OS 9 was a lot quicker then Mac OSX an already had coöperative multithreaded multitasking.
