Was looking for a post to agree with, and here it is Good RTF in/export and PDF export. That's it. Cannot expect anything more. In the future possibly docx/odf *export*, but not import. Personally, I use Office Online in Odyssey on my X1000. Works fine for my simple Word and Excel needs.

RTF? WTF!
RTF is dead. Even Word Online you are probably using doesn't support RTF. But does support docx, doc, ODT, PDF. (RTF spec was last updated early 2008 and than abandoned in favor of open XML based formats) So why implement dead proprietary! document file format?

@ExiE

Ok, docx/odf then. It's just that FW already has (some) support for RTF. Might be easier to start there.

Saving docx/odf is probably quite simple, but importing it, trying to sort through unsupported tags and fields just sounds unfeasable. And importing and then exporting would loose at least half the document.

Forget about doc. Binary and not officially spec'ed(?).

@terminills

Glad to hear that, although I did'nt respond to this thread earlier - I am definitely interested in an OS4 native version (or OS3 version that runs well on OS4).

Final Writer 2015. Sounds like you've set yourself a deadline there. Good luck with the development.

I'm just happy to say I have the first new build in 18 years running on my machine. :)

A few thoughts...
It seems google documents and open office formats do not work together as nicely as google with xlsx or docx. So if I want to do mobile documenting, it seems open office format is not optimal.

I wonder if it's harder to support google format or MS format...
Support for either of those would be welcome for me.

@OlafS25

I get a few docx files now and even xlsx if it's an invoice, though I think it's a bad idea to send the "source code" to a spreadsheet when it should be a pre-rendered read only document. Anyway, even using PDF has problems. XP doesn't know what a PDF is even though OS4 does! And my now old Android doesn't know what PDF is. It barely understands text.

Because I can export it with Wordworth.

OSX also used RTF, or RTFD, rather.

When I send PC people a document from my Amiga I export as RTF. Though I am tempted to keep it in WW format to see how they like it when trying to open an unsupported format.

In any case DOCX cannot replace RTF as RTF extends ASCII even though it's more like AmigaGuide with its tags and such. DOCX is a heap of files, some binary, all unreaaable in s text editor, all zipped up.

The way it is DOCX is no easier than DOC. Likewise XLSX is no easier than XLS. When we can get software to read and display these formats we can relax.

Great to hear! Do you just have the source for the Amiga version or did you get the source for the Windows version as well?

@terminills

I would probably pay 30 US or so.

Things I'd like to see in the newer version:
Support for larger screen resolutions
A more intuitive portrait/landscape interface
Vertical typing (or at least the ability to print vertically - I can't get FW97 to do it...probably goes hand in hand with the above)
Print Preview? (not super necessary, but would be cool)
Ability to export to at least doc or odt (docx ok as well, but whichever is easier, as doc isn't going away)
I'd pay more if it came with a good spiral bound manual.

Considering much of the discussion is centered on support of this or that old or modern document format, perhaps that which is needed is a simple document conversion program rather than a overhaul of an old program.

In all honesty, if I was able to convert my FW97 documents to a modern format, I would no longer need to use FW97 at all. A modern FW would have to be pretty outstanding for me to use it over MSWord, OpenOffice, or LibreOffice on a PC (which is what I have to use for both work and home anymore).

Do we need an updated FW, or just a file conversion program?

Debate...

This seems the nicer and more elegant solution, honestly...especially if done in Arexx.

Awesome! I was going to clarify my post that I would be willing to pay for an updated 68k version only, although I would certainly pay more for a license that had Morphos/Aros/AOS4 native support as well :)

Some basic updates that are required before anything is released.

1. Turboprint support is needed as Final Writer didn't support proper 24 bit printouts
2. Proper RTG support since the current version has issues with anything beyond 8 bit screens.
3. Bug fixes... Keyboard mapping issues etc
4. Proper locale support.
5. My personal wishlist item is ODF support we'll see if it makes the initial release or not.

As for other features they all take time and I make no promises as to how soon they can be implemented.
