Can you do the change about which Alain says in cow3d , so to do another test ? Gears results looks about right now.
@Alain Is it possible to have some "unite" fps-counter function which will works and on slow machines, and on fast ones, and so on, i.e. to allow us to use it as tests on os4,mos,aors and any kind of hardware/wrpapers/layers/whatever ?:)

| @OlafS25 Exactly : ) But it is a fair way to check 3D Performance between AROS and AmigaOS. Both work on the "pure" 3D System.
Also gears is part of every AROS build and available for AmigaOS and MOS too. As well as Linux. So while simple, the best way to check the 3D System.

To check opengl based 3d system : yes. To check lowlevel driver (warp3d or gallium or whatever): no. For example on os4, while warp3d driver can be fast , minigl will slow things down because of for example software TCL => gear will give wrong opinion about whole system, while its only minigl give overhead.
So more or less "fair" comprasion of 3d systems on all flawors, its:
1). check lowlevel drivers (cow3d or something which use w3d fucntions or so). 2). check hilevel driver (any opengl based stuff).
I.e. cow3d, gears and quake3 will be good canditate to do fair tests. Through, only when cow3d will be fixed for fast machines

:) nope, just to compare what we can compare and to see truth. I mean, for sure opengl tests will suck on os4, as we all know there is software TCL. That even no need checking, as its all known. But we can check how fast works DrawTriStrip and such on all flavors.
And for me its interesting to know, where is cull-pit, in p96, in w3d, in minigl or where. If by checking warp3d we will see that its all fast enough, then minigl/TCL is what is left. Except for AROS, which has no Warp3D, and MorphOS, which only has Warp3D support for Voodoo and Radeon R200 cards. _________________ This is just like television, only you can see much further. |

But and morphos and aros, have wazp3d, which are small wrapper which do transfer stuff to their lowlevel drivers (so real 3d just with little wrapper), without doing anything hardcore on top. Sure, it will loose few fps, but just a few. Its not like adding minigl at top, which do software TCL and stuff.
I mean, its not some hardcore wparring code all around of every function with adding milion of calcualtion. When i help Alain with tests back in past, that wrapper for winuae (which tranfer warp3d calls, to real window's api), was just list of stub-functions in library, which then transfers where is need it.
In other words: warp3d on aros/morphos, is "almost" real warp3d (ok, add few more fps for that warp3d->stub->real call). While minigl on os4, its not "just a few fps at top", but a loot of calcualtion and rendering. And how do you know how it works on MorphOS? You are simply guessing. You have no idea if it goes through optimized or slow paths in OpenGL. Your 'few fps' is pure speculation and if you want to use it in benchmark this is silly.

Good point. I just think that at the end of the day measuring real world performance is more useful. Even if the new Warp3D SI driver beats Goa or the Wazp3D+TGL combo, it still wont help 3D games, which are 99.9% OpenGL. _________________ This is just like television, only you can see much further. |

Of course, benchmarks based on that will be kind of wrong and not 100% accurate, but they will be about real. Yes, guessing all over places, and only opengl today matter, but such compare (with w3d calls), can give at least more or less picture. Not accurate, silly and co, but something to start with.
At least, they will be not that silly as if we will compare opengl now, when we all know that on mos and aros TCL and stuff present, while on aos4 are not, and minigl do half of stuff via main cpu.

| well, i test cow3d on other hardware and vmware version and i have different result, so i think this cow3D on vmware or native x86 can chage performances second to what distro i use.
Vmware 11 setting with AROS 2.03:
Vmware CPU= i7 2600 (1 unit, 2 cores) Memory= 1 GB
3600 alternate with 7200 fps
Vmware 10 settings with AROS 1.4.5 Vmware CPU= E8500 (1 unit, 1 cores) Memory= 1 GB
40 fps
Where is Gears?

| however there is another strange thing..
if i use cow3D compiled with vmware 11 in vmware 10 don't work if i use cow3d compiled with real x86 it works on vmware 10..
maybe these strange are strange for some vmware config.. boh
gears in vmware 10 on E8500 take 180 fps

| @Seiya Maybe the Compiler does some autoconfiguration which leads to incompatibilites between the "virtual cpu's" which may differ in both Versions... or you have enabled some CPU instruction in vmware 11 which are not available in 10.
@OlafS25 Wieso? Bestimmte Leute nerven mich und sehe nicht ein deren "LieblingsOS", welches sich gerne mal an AROS bedient noch passiv zu unterstützen. Find ich logisch : ) Außerdem steht der Auffand nicht in Relation zur maximal erreichbaren Zielgruppe.

Something else to consider would be titles using higher resolution textures on big screenmodes. At some point, texture memory needs to be swapped about and managed. This is much less likely on cards that have 1+ GiB of RAM at their disposal compared to cards with memory capacities measured in MiB.
Under heavy texture load, I expect the SI to outperform everything (GL or Warp3D), simply because everything else will be spending more time reuploading texture data than it does on actual 3D. Not even the gains from TCL will mitigate the impact shovelling of texture data every frame._________________ Doing stupid things for fun... |

ok, here i have made the change in the source with framescount*20 so now it works.
in the archive you find two version:
vm10 is compiled in Vmware 10 vm11 is compiled in Vmware 11
now the results:
Cow3D compiled with vm10 = 37 fps with E8500 Cow3D compiled with vm11 = 4500 fps with I7 2600
in my config cow3d vm10 doesn't work in vmware 11 and viceversa
I have to say that: in vmware 11 i have many erros when compiling while perfect building with vmware 10
